The short answer

The Audi R8 was a mid-engined two-seat sports car built from 2006 to early 2024. It used quattro all-wheel drive, came with V8 and V10 engines across two generations, and ended production in the first quarter of 2024.

The Audi R8 is a mid-engined, two-seat sports car that Audi built from 2006 until production ended in the first quarter of 2024. It paired a mid-mounted engine with quattro permanent all-wheel drive, and it went through two generations, V8 and V10 power, and an electric e-tron version.

Where did the Audi R8 come from?

The R8 grew out of a concept car, the Audi Le Mans quattro, first shown at the 2003 Geneva and Frankfurt motor shows. The production car was revealed at the Paris Auto Show on 30 September 2006, and it carried the concept's name into the showroom.

Frank Lamberty and Julian Hoenig designed the concept. Audi Sport GmbH, formerly quattro GmbH and a private subsidiary of Audi AG, handled the car exclusively, from design through to manufacture.

The name caused some confusion. An R8 Le Mans Prototype had won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the road car shared that name.

The R8 took its inspiration from the Lamborghini Gallardo, although the second generation was built on the Huracan platform. Its body rests on the Audi Space Frame, an aluminium monocoque built on space frame principles, and the car was the first production model with full-LED headlamps when it launched in 2006.

A Le Mans concept turned road car, with quattro grip and a choice of V8 or V10 power.

How is the Audi R8 built?

Cars are built at Neckarsulm, where 70 workers fit 5,000 different parts by hand, and the site was redeveloped at a cost of 28 million euros. Output normally runs between eight and fifteen cars a day, and the factory can reach a maximum of 29.

Measurement drives quality control here. Ninety-five lasers check the whole vehicle in five seconds, and over 220 readings must sit within 0.1 millimetres of the planned figures.

First generation production ended in August 2015, and the second generation carried the model forward from the same aluminium site.

What engines did the Audi R8 use?

Launch models used a 4.2 FSI V8 coupe and a 5.2 FSI V10 coupe, with the V10 Plus added during the 2012 facelift. The 2018 refresh lifted the base car from 532 hp to 562 hp, and the V10 Plus became the V10 Performance Quattro at 612 hp.

The refresh added 10 hp (7 kW) to the V10, and it also gave the front end a more angular look. It arrived as a 2018 model, or as a 2020 model year in the United States.

Which R8 variants came first?

The Spyder convertible arrived in 2008, followed by the high-performance GT in 2011. Motorsport versions also appeared from 2008, so the sporting side of the range developed alongside the road cars.

The manufacturer used the Spyder name for its convertible, and that body style stayed in the line-up across both generations. Those variants show how quickly Audi widened the car's appeal beyond the original coupe.

What changed in the second generation?

The second generation, coded Type 4S, debuted at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. Its first models were the e-tron, the V10 5.2 FSI and the V10 Plus, and the car sat on the Modular Sports System platform it shares with the Huracan.

Several choices set it apart from its predecessor. There was no manual transmission on offer, and the entry-level V8 trim had gone.

A Spyder arrived in 2016 with base V10 power, and the V10 Plus Spyder joined in mid-2017. The R8 RWS, a rear-wheel-drive version, was also introduced.

Development of Type 4S started in late 2013 and was completed in late 2014. The car reached Europe as a 2015 model and the US as a 2017 model year.

Was there an electric R8?

Yes, the R8 e-tron used a 92-kWh battery and entered production in small numbers. Fewer than 100 units were sold, so it remained a niche model within the range.

An electric version began development during the first generation, but it only reached production with the second. The earlier 2010 prototype, built on the first-generation car, never entered production.

Which was the most powerful R8?

The 2023 R8 GT produced 620 hp and was the last R8 to be made, limited to 333 units. It stood above the 612 hp V10 Performance Quattro.

Limited editions ran through the car's life. The GT's small run came after the Exclusive Edition and the motorsport variants.

What was the Audi R8 Exclusive Edition?

The R8 V10 Plus Exclusive Edition was a run of 25 units for the United States market in 2017. It was the first Audi production vehicle sold in the US with laser headlight technology.

Quantum Gray paint covered the body, with a Titanium Black-optic exterior package and an orange accent stripe along the carbon fibre sideblades. The cabin offered black leather with orange highlights, a quilted Alcantara headliner and carbon door sills reading one of 25.

The laser high-beam module supplements the standard full LED headlights and activates above 40 mph (64 km/h) to extend the visible range. Because of the laser emission, its use in the US depends on FDA approval.

Where was the Audi R8 sold?

The R8 has been sold across Asia, from India and Japan to South Korea and Vietnam, while China, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates were among the markets offered from 2008. The list reflects a car that found buyers well beyond Germany.

European sales figures cover a long list of countries, from Austria and Belgium to Germany, Italy and Spain.

How did the Audi R8 appear in films?

The R8 was the personal vehicle of Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr., across six Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Type 42 cars appeared in the Iron Man films, and Type 4S models turned up in later Marvel titles.

The Iron Man trilogy used a V8 in the first film, a V10 Spyder in the second and an e-tron prototype in the third. Later Marvel Studios releases used 2016 V10 Plus cars in two films, Age of Ultron and Civil War, and a Spyder in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

What did Jacky Ickx say about the R8?

Jacky Ickx, who won the 24 Hours of Le Mans six times, ranked the R8 as the top handler among road cars. That verdict carries weight, given his record in endurance racing.

The praise sat alongside the car's own racing link. The road car's name tied it to a Le Mans winning prototype, so handling reputation and racing heritage reinforced one another.

What are the Audi R8 specifications?

The table sums up the main figures for the car across both generations and its refreshes. Each engine output is the figure given for that stage of production, so the table also shows how power climbed over time.

Frequently asked questions

When did production of the Audi R8 end?

Production ended in the first quarter of 2024, after the second generation had carried the model forward from the first. The first generation's own production had already ended in August 2015, which marked the switch to the Type 4S car.

Did the Audi R8 come with a manual gearbox?

The first generation offered a manual transmission, but the second generation did not. That change was one of the clearest differences between the two cars, and buyers of the later model had no manual option to choose.

Is the Audi R8 related to the Lamborghini Gallardo?

The original car drew its inspiration from the Lamborghini Gallardo. The second generation moved onto the Huracan platform, which the Lamborghini model shares with it. That shared base makes the two cars close relatives, although the Audi was designed, developed and manufactured entirely by Audi Sport GmbH.

How many R8 e-tron cars were built?

The electric version used a 92-kWh battery, and fewer than 100 units were sold. It is the only R8 in this story that ran on electricity rather than a V8 or V10.
