Timo Glock is a German racing driver who competed in Formula One from 2004 to 2012, after winning the GP2 Series title in 2007. He spent the bulk of his grand prix career with Toyota, Virgin and Marussia before switching to the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, where BMW made him a factory driver. He returned to the DTM in 2025.

How did Glock reach Formula One?

Glock was born in Lindenfels, West Germany, on 18 March 1982. His racing started in 1998, when he was 15, and karting brought several championships. A BMW-run junior cup followed in 2000 and a German Formula BMW title in 2001. His first German Formula Three season, in 2002, ended with third in the standings and rookie honours.

The Formula Three Euroseries was his stage in 2003, where three race wins and three more podiums took him to fifth in the championship. Those results led Jordan Grand Prix to sign him as its test driver for the 2004 Formula One season.

A GP2 champion who spent his Formula One years in the middle of the grid and found his strongest form in touring cars.

What did Glock do at Jordan in 2004?

Glock made his Formula One debut at the 2004 Canadian Grand Prix, replacing Giorgio Pantano, whose contract dispute with the team had left a seat empty. He finished 11th, then inherited seventh when the Williams and Toyota cars were disqualified, which gave him two points on debut. He took over from Pantano for the final three races of the season.

His sponsorship from Deutsche Post brought the colours of DHL back to the Jordan car, a detail that made the team's livery familiar again. It was a modest start, but it gave him the first points of a Formula One career that would run for nine seasons.

Why did the 2007 GP2 title matter?

The GP2 Series is the category immediately below Formula One, so a title there was the clearest route back to the top tier. Glock had finished fourth in the 2006 drivers' standings with iSport, earning a most improved driver award along the way. He stayed with the team for 2007, taking one feature win and four sprint wins en route to the title.

The 2006 season had started less well. Glock began with the midfield BCN Competicion team, collected average results, then moved mid-season to the front-running iSport squad, where his results improved steadily. In December 2006 BMW Sauber signed him as its second test driver for 2007, a role that put him in the frame for a race seat.

That seat did not come straight away. When Robert Kubica crashed heavily at the Canadian Grand Prix, speculation grew that Glock might take over the BMW drive. The team instead chose its lead test driver, Sebastian Vettel, who went on to a full-time seat at Toro Rosso. Glock was then promoted to main test and reserve driver for BMW.

How did the Toyota years go?

Glock signed for Toyota for 2008 on a three-year deal to replace Ralf Schumacher. The Contract Recognition Board had ruled that he was free to race for Toyota, even though he was still under a test contract with BMW. That was the start of his most productive period in Formula One, with three podium finishes across the next two seasons.

His 2008 season included a fourth place at the Canadian Grand Prix, ahead of Felipe Massa's Ferrari, and a fourth at the Singapore Grand Prix. At the Hungarian Grand Prix he qualified a career-best fifth and then finished second, the best race result of his time with Toyota. He ended the season tenth in the drivers' championship with 25 points, behind teammate Jarno Trulli.

What happened at the 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix?

The final race of 2008 turned on a decision about tyres. Glock was seventh with a few laps to go when rain began to cover the track, and he stayed out on dry-weather tyres while most rivals, including title contender Lewis Hamilton, pitted for wet ones. That gamble lifted him up the order, and he was fourth at the start of the final lap.

His dry tyres struggled as the rain intensified. Sebastian Vettel and Hamilton both passed him in the closing corners, and Hamilton regained fifth to win the drivers' title. Hamilton beat Felipe Massa by a single point, while Glock finished sixth.

Many Brazilian fans had backed Massa and blamed Glock for the result, and the backlash was severe enough that Glock later revealed he and Toyota team members had to leave the country under police escort. A line from commentator Martin Brundle during Hamilton's overtake also became an internet meme, which kept the race in the news long after the chequered flag.

What were the 2009 highlights?

Glock's 2009 season began with a fifth place in Australia, after the rear wing on his Toyota was declared illegal in qualifying and he started 19th. Hamilton was later disqualified from that race, and Glock was promoted to fourth. In Malaysia he started third after penalties for Vettel and Rubens Barrichello, then finished third when the rain-shortened race ended on lap 32.

Consecutive seventh places in China and Bahrain brought his points total to 12 by mid-season. His best result of the year came at the Singapore Grand Prix, where he qualified sixth and finished second behind Hamilton. A late penalty for Nico Rosberg helped him take the place, and it was his second podium of the year.

Glock's 2009 season also had darker moments. In qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix he crashed heavily at the final corner and was airlifted to hospital with a leg injury. Further complications, including a cracked vertebra, ruled him out of the Brazilian and Abu Dhabi rounds, and Kamui Kobayashi made his debut in his place. Toyota then left Formula One at the end of 2009, leaving Glock without a team.

What happened with Virgin and Marussia?

Glock signed with Manor Grand Prix in November 2009, and the team became Virgin Racing that same month. His teammate was Lucas di Grassi, a former GP2 rival. Glock began 2010 with three retirements in Bahrain, Australia and Malaysia, and he failed to start the Chinese Grand Prix after an engine failure.

His first finish for the team came in Spain, where he was 18th, and his best result of 2010 was 14th in Japan, the team's best finish of the year. Glock signed a three-year extension in July 2011 to stay with the team until 2014. His teammate Jerome d'Ambrosio failed to start the Turkish Grand Prix that year.

The team was renamed Marussia for 2012, and Glock partnered the French rookie Charles Pic. He opened the season with 14th in Australia, which equalled his highest finish with the team, and in Singapore he produced his best result for Marussia with 12th. He finished the 2012 season 20th in the drivers' championship, his best ranking for the team.

In January 2013 Glock left Marussia by mutual consent. He had been due to partner Max Chilton, but the team replaced him with Jules Bianchi, and Glock's Formula One career came to an end after nine seasons.

How did Glock's 2012 season unfold after Australia?

Glock withdrew from the European Grand Prix with a stomach bug, then returned to finish 18th at the British Grand Prix and 22nd at his home race in Germany. Tensions with his teammate Charles Pic grew in Hungary, where Pic blocked him in qualifying. Glock finished 21st there after a battle with Michael Schumacher and Pedro de la Rosa.

At Spa he finished 15th after a collision with Pastor Maldonado, and he finished ahead of his teammate in the closing stages. At Monza he finished 17th after front wing damage from a collision with Vitaly Petrov at the second corner of the first lap. In Japan he was up to 11th by the second lap after two first-corner incidents, but he finished 16th.

How successful was Glock in the DTM?

Glock moved to the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters in 2013 with BMW. He scored his first points and first podium in his third race, finishing third, and he did not score again until the final race at Hockenheim, where he won his first DTM race. Between 2013 and 2021 he won five DTM races in total.

BMW's factory connection gave him a regular place in the series for most of the decade. He returned to the DTM in 2025, and his touring car record now covers several seasons with the series.

Did Glock race outside Formula One?

Yes. In 2005 he raced in the Champ Car World Series with Paul Gentilozzi's Rocketsports team, finishing eighth in the final points standings and winning the Rookie of the Year award. He also raced in the Porsche Supercup and later made guest appearances for Porsche Motorsport.

His best Champ Car result came at the Molson Indy in Montreal, where he finished second behind Oriol Servia. In the closing laps he twice retained the lead by missing the final chicane. Officials asked him to hand the position back, which he did mid-way through the final lap, and his attempt to regain it came too late.

His Porsche Supercup debut came in 2004 for the Porsche AG team at the Nurburgring, where he finished sixth and seventh in the two races. Porsche Motorsport invited him back as a guest driver in 2023, his first race in 19 years, and he finished 15th at the Hungaroring and ninth at Monza. As a guest driver he was not eligible to score points.

What has Glock done in broadcasting?

Glock joined the German broadcaster RTL as a Formula One pundit from 2018 to 2020. Since 2021 he has worked as an analyst for Sky Sport, which obtained exclusive rights to Formula One in Germany. He has therefore become a regular figure on German television coverage of the sport.
