A 2017 Ferrari Challenge debut, Porsche programmes, a Proton Competition seat and a European Le Mans Series podium in 2021.
Born in Heidelberg in 1977, Fassbender began racing in the Ferrari Challenge in 2017 and later drove sportscars for the Proton team. His best result came in 2021, when he finished second at Portimao behind the No. 80 Iron Lynx car.
Michael Fassbender is a German and Irish actor who has also raced sportscars. He started in the Ferrari Challenge in 2017, moved into Porsche machinery in 2019, and drove for Proton Competition in 2020 and 2021 in the European Le Mans Series. His best finish in that series came at Portimao in 2021, where he took second place.
Racing did not replace his film career. It filled a gap in it. After 2019 he stepped away from acting for four years, and during that break he took up motor racing. He returned to films in 2023.
How did Michael Fassbender start out as an actor?
Fassbender was born in Heidelberg in 1977 and grew up in Killarney, County Kerry, from the age of two. He decided to act at 17, after being cast in a play, and left home at 19 to train at the Drama Centre London. He later left the course in 1999 to tour with the Oxford Stage Company.
Before acting paid steadily, he took ordinary jobs as a bartender, a postman, a manual labourer, a market researcher for Royal Mail and an employee at Dell.
His screen debut was as Pat Christenson in Band of Brothers, the Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg miniseries that aired in 2001. He then played Azazeal across both series of Hex, the Sky One fantasy drama. In 2003 he played Jonathan Harker in a ten-part BBC Northern Ireland radio serial of Dracula.
Advertising work followed. A 2004 Guinness commercial, The Quarrel, showed a man swimming from Ireland to New York to apologise to his brother, and the spot took gold at the 2005 FAB Awards.
He had the racing dream long before the cameras, and he chased it in the gap between films.
What made Hunger his breakthrough?
In Steve McQueen's Hunger (2008) Fassbender played Bobby Sands, a Provisional IRA prisoner. To prepare, he limited himself to 600 calories a day and weighed 57 kg (125 lb) as Sands. The performance is regarded as his breakthrough, and it earned him the British Independent Film Award.
Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian called the performance ferociously convincing, though he found the emaciated image hard to watch.
Hunger was the first of three films Fassbender made with McQueen. The other two were Shame and 12 Years a Slave.
In 2009 he played British officer Archie Hicox in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds. The same year he appeared in Andrea Arnold's Fish Tank as the partner of a single mother with two children.
Two 2010 films were less kind to him. Jonah Hex, a Western, cast him as Burke, and it received mostly negative reviews. In Centurion, a Roman war film directed by Neil Marshall, he played Quintus Dias.
How did 2011 change his career?
2011 was his breakout year. He played Edward Rochester in Jane Eyre, Magneto in X-Men: First Class, Carl Jung in A Dangerous Method and a man struggling with sexual addiction in Shame. The Shame performance won him the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice International Film Festival.
X-Men: First Class is set in 1962 and tells how Charles Xavier, played by James McAvoy, came to be Magneto's friend. Released on 3 June 2011, it was a success with critics and at the box office, and it made Fassbender a bigger name.
Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method premiered at Venice that year, as did Shame. Shame also brought him nominations from BAFTA and the Golden Globes in the best actor categories.
He was a serious contender for the Academy Award for Best Actor, but the nomination never came. Various sources blamed the film's explicit scenes for the snub.
Which films built his profile in 2012 and 2013?
In 2012 he played an MI6 agent in Steven Soderbergh's Haywire, and he played the android David 8 in Ridley Scott's Prometheus. Reviews praised the film's visual design and singled out his performance as David 8.
In 2013 he played the title role in The Counselor, a Ridley Scott film based on a Cormac McCarthy script. The same year he made 12 Years a Slave, playing Edwin Epps in his third film with Steve McQueen.
The role brought a nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category at the 86th Academy Awards in 2013. It was the first of his two Oscar nominations.
What did Steve Jobs require of him?
Fassbender played Steve Jobs in Danny Boyle's film, which was written by Aaron Sorkin and based on Walter Isaacson's biography. He joined the project after Christian Bale left it. The part earned him a nomination for Best Actor at the 88th Academy Awards in 2015.
Filming began in San Francisco in January 2015, and the film premiered that September. Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter wrote that Fassbender did not closely resemble Jobs physically, but still captured the essentials of the man.
Macbeth followed in 2015. Justin Kurzel directed it, with Marion Cotillard opposite him in the lead and David Thewlis cast as the king, and the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival that year. Filming had begun in January 2014.
Other films of that period included Slow West, a western in which he played the enigmatic traveller Silas, and The Light Between Oceans, directed by Derek Cianfrance. He also appeared in Trespass Against Us alongside Brendan Gleeson in 2016.
Which X-Men and Alien films did he return to?
Fassbender played Magneto again in X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014, then in X-Men: Apocalypse in 2016 and Dark Phoenix in 2019. In 2017 he returned to the Alien series as the android David in Alien: Covenant, and he played a second character in the same film.
Dark Phoenix was poorly received by critics and did badly at the box office.
Harry Hole in The Snowman was given to Fassbender in 2015, making him the first actor to play the character on screen. Tomas Alfredson directed, and the picture came out in October 2017.
How did his return to acting go after the racing break?
After the four-year break he came back with The Killer, David Fincher's thriller, shown first at the Venice festival in 2023. Critics praised him in the lead as an assassin who loves yoga.
The same year he appeared in Taika Waititi's Next Goal Wins, a film built on a documentary of the same title, and helped produce The Kitchen, a dystopian Netflix drama by Daniel Kaluuya and Joe Murtagh.
From 2024 he began starring in The Agency, an action thriller series for Paramount+, and he took a supporting part in Kneecap, an Irish comedy-drama.
In 2025 he played alongside Cate Blanchett in Black Bag, a spy thriller from Steven Soderbergh that critics received very warmly. He also starred alongside Taylor Russell in Na Hong-jin's thriller Hope, and he appeared in Kung Fury 2 with Arnold Schwarzenegger and David Hasselhoff. Kung Fury 2 finished filming by 2019, but legal issues have kept it from release.
Which Academy Award nominations did Fassbender receive?
Fassbender received two Academy Award nominations. The first was for Best Supporting Actor for 12 Years a Slave at the 86th Academy Awards in 2013, and the second was for Best Actor for Steve Jobs at the 88th Academy Awards in 2015.
His wider awards record includes four BAFTA nominations, three Golden Globe nominations and two European Film Award nominations. Other prizes include the Volpi Cup, a Critics' Choice Movie Award and an Actor Award.
How did Michael Fassbender get into motorsport?
Fassbender has said he dreamed of racing long before he took up acting. He followed Formula One closely, was a supporter of Scuderia Ferrari, and took part in Ferrari's Corso Pilota programme in 2016. His first Ferrari Challenge race came in May 2017, in the Coppa Shell class.
That early appetite turned into seat time quickly. His first weekend in the series was at Mugello Circuit, where he finished 15th. He then entered the Challenge's North American division and took sixth at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
What did the 2018 Ferrari Challenge season show?
In 2018 Fassbender took on every round of the Ferrari Challenge North America calendar. He won the opening round at Daytona International Speedway and finished fifth in the championship standings. It was his second year in the series, after a partial start in 2017.
The Daytona win was the high point of the year, and it gave the season a clear start.
The fifth-place standings finish reflected steady running across the calendar rather than one standout weekend. For a driver whose racing had started only the year before, that was a solid return on a full programme.
Why did Fassbender move to Porsche?
In 2019 Fassbender switched to Porsche and competed in the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany series, run by the German Porsche Racing Experience. Porsche also made him the subject of a YouTube series called Road to Le Mans, which put his progress in front of a wider audience than the paddock alone.
The move gave him a manufacturer's programme in place of the single-make Ferrari cars he had been driving, and a German championship to race in.
By 2020 his focus had moved on to endurance racing, the discipline that the European Le Mans Series is built around. The Carrera Cup years served as a bridge between a Ferrari entry and a full sportscar season.
How did the 2020 European Le Mans Series season go?
The 2020 campaign was a full-season effort for Proton Competition, with Fassbender in a 2017 Porsche 911 RSR alongside Richard Lietz and Felipe Fernandez Laser. Later that season he raced a guest entry in the Porsche Supercup at Barcelona, where a crash at the start ended his race almost immediately.
Endurance racing is shared driving, so a team's results depend on three drivers in the same car rather than on one person's pace.
The Supercup outing ended almost before it began. A collision on the grid was enough to finish his race in seconds, a reminder of how little space there is in a crowded field at the start.
What did the 2021 season add?
Fassbender stayed with Proton Competition in 2021. Fourth-place results came at the Red Bull Ring and Spa-Francorchamps, but the season's real milestone came at Portimao. There he finished second behind the No. 80 Iron Lynx car, which went on to take the LMGTE title, and it was his best finish and first podium in the series.
The Portimao podium came in the last race of the season.
Proton's season ended with fourth in the LMGTE teams standings, on 61 points. That total reflects a year of steady results from the whole team.

What does the racing record add up to?
Fassbender's racing record covers several years and three series. It includes a Ferrari Challenge opening-round win at Daytona, a Porsche Carrera Cup programme in Germany, and a European Le Mans Series podium at Portimao.
The Portimao podium stands out, because it was his first in the European Le Mans Series. Set against his film work the racing tally is small, but it was earned on track in cars he raced alongside team-mates.
