The short answer

Denny Hamlin races for Joe Gibbs Racing in the NASCAR Cup Series and has 64 Cup wins, including three Daytona 500 victories. He is the record holder for most Cup wins without a championship. He co-owns 23XI Racing with Michael Jordan, which he formed in 2020.

Denny Hamlin has raced for Joe Gibbs Racing since signing a driver development deal in 2004. He holds the record for the most NASCAR Cup Series wins without a championship, and he reached the Chase 20 times in his first 21 seasons.

Where did Denny Hamlin's racing career begin?

Hamlin was born in Tampa, Florida, and grew up mostly in Chesterfield Court House, Virginia. He started racing go-karts at the age of seven, in 1988, and by 1997 he had won the WKA Manufacturers Cup. In 2004 he agreed a development deal with Joe Gibbs Racing as a young driver.

At sixteen he moved into mini stocks, and at Langley Speedway he took pole and won his first stock car start. Grand Stock came in 1998 and Late Model Stock Cars in 2000. By 2002 he had ten Late Model victories, and in 2003 he collected 25 wins and thirty poles from 36 races.

The record-holder for most Cup wins without a title, still chasing the one championship he has never had.

How did Hamlin's first Cup seasons unfold?

Hamlin made his Nextel Cup debut at Kansas Speedway in 2005, driving the No. 11 FedEx-sponsored Chevrolet, and he became the full-time driver of that car for 2006. That rookie season brought two Pocono wins, a Budweiser Shootout victory and the Raybestos Rookie of the Year award.

Before that, in 2004, he made five starts in the Truck Series for EJP Racing, finishing tenth on debut at IRP. In 2005 he ran the full Busch Series season, finishing fifth in the standings with eleven top-ten finishes and $1,064,110 in earnings.

The June Pocono 500 gave him his first Cup win, and the July Pennsylvania 500 at the same track made him only the second rookie to sweep both races at one venue in a single season. Jimmie Johnson had done it at Dover International Speedway in 2002. Both of Hamlin's Pocono wins started from pole position.

He ended third in the final Cup standings, the strongest rookie points result of the modern era and the best showing since James Hylton in 1966. He also became the first rookie to make the Chase for the Nextel Cup.

What did 2007 and 2008 bring?

Hamlin won his third Cup race at New Hampshire in 2007 and finished twelfth in the final standings. In 2008 he finished eighth in points, won early at Martinsville and led 381 of 410 laps at Richmond before finishing 24th after cutting a tire.

The 2007 season had its setbacks too. A wreck early in the Pepsi 400 at Daytona dropped him to 43rd, his first finish that low. He still picked up three Nationwide Series wins at Darlington, Michigan and Dover in the No. 20 car.

In 2008 he won four Nationwide races, racing No. 18 and No. 20 machinery for Joe Gibbs Racing, plus No. 32 for Braun Racing. Those results kept his Cup and Nationwide programmes busy and gave him a full calendar of experience.

Why were 2009 and 2010 so productive?

In 2009 Hamlin won four Cup races, including a Pocono win on August 3 that broke a fifty-race winless streak. In 2010 he won eight races and finished as runner-up in the points, 39 behind Jimmie Johnson.

His 2009 season ended with a win at Homestead, where he started 38th and led seventy laps. He also took his first win at Richmond and held off Johnson at Martinsville on October 25, a result that showed his strength on short tracks.

The 2010 season began with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, which he suffered playing basketball on January 22. He had knee surgery in the spring and still won the rain-postponed Martinsville race on March 29. Two days later he went under the knife again, then came back on April 19, three weeks after the operation.

At Texas he started 28th, worked through the field and passed Jeff Burton on the outside to secure his tenth career win. On May 8 he swept both races at Darlington, the first driver to do so since Mark Martin in 1993, and he won the Southern 500 from eighth on the grid while leading 108 laps.

How did a back injury affect 2013?

Hamlin suffered an L1 vertebral compression fracture in a Fontana crash with Joey Logano in 2013. Doctors expected the back to heal in six weeks, and Mark Martin and Brian Vickers drove his car while he was out. He still finished the season 23rd in points and missed the Chase, the only season in which he has not reached it.

The Fontana crash came after a fierce battle with Logano on the final laps. Contact on the white flag lap sent Logano into the outside wall, and Hamlin then hit an inside retaining wall head-on. He was airlifted to hospital as a precaution, and by the following season both drivers said their feud was over.

He returned at Darlington, qualified sixth and crossed the line in second, with Matt Kenseth ahead. At the Coca-Cola 600 he took pole at a record speed of 314.826 km/h (195.624 mph), beating the 311.743 km/h (193.708 mph) set by Greg Biffle. He later won the season finale at Homestead.

How many Daytona 500s has Hamlin won?

Hamlin has won three Daytona 500s, in 2016, 2019 and 2020. That puts him among five drivers who have won the race in back-to-back seasons. The other four are Petty, Yarborough, Marlin and Byron.

The 2016 race was decided by 0.011 seconds over Martin Truex Jr., the closest finish the race has ever seen. It also gave team owner Joe Gibbs his first Daytona 500 win since 1993, and Hamlin had led a race-high 95 laps on the way.

In 2020 he won by 0.014 seconds over Ryan Blaney in overtime, one of the two tightest finishes the race has produced. That win was clouded by a violent crash that involved Ryan Newman at the finish line, and Hamlin later apologised for post-race burnouts that took place while Newman's condition was unknown.

What happened with the Brickyard penalties in 2014?

NASCAR impounded Hamlin's No. 11 car after the Brickyard 400 failed post-race inspection. Two days later it suspended Darian Grubb, the crew chief, and Wesley Sherrill, the car chief, for six races, fined Grubb $125,000 and took 75 driver points from Hamlin and 75 owner points from Joe Gibbs Racing.

Hamlin had finished third at Indianapolis before the inspection problem came to light. The team considered an appeal but decided against it, and the No. 11 crew was put on probation through December 31, 2014.

Has Hamlin ever won a championship?

No. Hamlin has reached the Championship 4 four times, in 2014, 2019, 2020 and 2021. He finished third in the standings in 2014 and again in 2021, and he was runner-up in the points in 2010, 39 behind Jimmie Johnson.

He has also missed the final four in some seasons. He was eliminated in the Round of 8 in 2017 after a wreck at Phoenix, and he missed the Championship 4 in 2022, 2023 and 2024. In 2022 Ross Chastain took the last final-four spot at Martinsville, pushing Hamlin out of contention.

What made 2022 a difficult season?

Hamlin opened 2022 in 37th at the Daytona 500 and recorded four DNFs in his first twelve races. In April NASCAR required him to attend sensitivity training after a social media post that he deleted and apologised for. He also won at Pocono, but the win was taken away.

His feud with Ross Chastain began at Gateway in the Enjoy Illinois 300, when Chastain bumped him into the wall. Hamlin then slowed repeatedly in front of Chastain, and NASCAR said he had made his point. At Pocono, post-race inspections found an unauthorised modification to the front fascia, the first Cup disqualification since 1960, when Emanuel Zervakis lost his win over an oversized fuel tank.

Hamlin finished 2022 fifth in the standings. A year later, on March 15, 2023, a penalty of 25 points and a $50,000 fine followed his podcast admission that he had intentionally wrecked Chastain at Phoenix.

How did 2023 and 2024 go?

In 2023 Hamlin won three races, at Kansas, Pocono and Bristol, and finished fifth in the standings for the second year running. In 2024 he won at Bristol, Richmond and Dover and finished eighth in the points.

The Pocono win on July 23, 2023 was his seventh there, breaking Jeff Gordon's record at the track. It was also his 50th Cup win and Toyota's 600th overall win. Later that year, at Bristol in the playoffs, he passed Junior Johnson, moving to the top of the list for wins by a driver lacking a title.

The 2024 Bristol win was the first spring event on concrete since 2020, and it sparked controversy over heavy tire wear. On August 22 a penalty followed for an engine that had been rebuilt rather than inspected, costing the team 75 points and crew chief Chris Gabehart a $100,000 fine.

FedEx ended a 20-year partnership with the No. 11 team at the close of 2024. On November 22 Joe Gibbs Racing named Chris Gabehart competition director and made Chris Gayle the crew chief for 2025.

What did 2025 and 2026 bring?

Progressive became the primary sponsor for 18 races in 2025, and Hamlin won at Martinsville, Darlington, Michigan, Dover, St. Louis and Las Vegas. In 2026 he won at Las Vegas, the All-Star Race, Nashville, Michigan and Pocono.

After his first Martinsville win in a decade, Hamlin waved a flag reading 11 against the world. It paid tribute to the Ohio State Buckeyes and pointed to the antitrust lawsuit that 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports brought against NASCAR. He also missed the Mexico City race in 2025 for the birth of his son, ending a run of 406 consecutive starts that began in 2014. NASCAR granted him a waiver the following day.

In 2026 his 61st career Cup win came at Las Vegas, which put him tenth on the all-time list. Across his career he has 64 Cup wins in total.

What is 23XI Racing?

23XI Racing is the team that Hamlin and basketball Hall of Famer Michael Jordan announced on September 21, 2020, as a single-car operation for the 2021 season. It grew to two cars in 2022, and in 2025 it ran a third charter, the No. 35, which Riley Herbst drove after the Stewart-Haas Racing shutdown.

Bubba Wallace drove the No. 23 car to his first Cup win at Talladega on October 4, 2021, the first win of that kind by a Black driver since Wendell Scott in 1963. In 2022 Kurt Busch, the 2004 Cup champion, drove the No. 45 and won at Kansas on May 16, leading 116 of 267 laps.

Tyler Reddick replaced Busch for 2023, and he won the 2024 regular season championship, the first title for the team. Wallace also won the 2025 Brickyard 400. In October 2024 Hamlin, Jordan and Front Row Motorsports sued NASCAR over the new charter agreements, and the case ended in a settlement on December 11, 2025, following eight days in court.

The 2026 Daytona 500 went to Reddick, a 23XI driver, and it was Hamlin's first Daytona 500 win as an owner.

What else has Hamlin done beyond driving?

Hamlin launched a weekly podcast, Actions Detrimental, with Dirty Mo Media in 2023. It airs on Monday mornings, with his friend and co-host Jared Allen, and it covers the latest Cup race, fan questions and his own race insights. He has also worked as a guest analyst for Fox and for NASCAR on The CW.

He appeared in the 2021 music video for Post Malone's Motley Crew alongside Bubba Wallace. He also recorded lap clips for NASCAR Heat Evolution, was among eight selectable drivers in EA Sports' NASCAR Racing arcade title, and the only rookie of the group. He graced the front cover of NASCAR Rivals in 2022.

In February 2023 the Superstar Racing Experience announced Hamlin for its July 13 event at Stafford Motor Speedway, and he won it in a race that lightning shortened.
