The short answer

This Carl Long family team dates to 2014 and has raced across several NASCAR and ARCA series. Its Cup No. 66 began in 2017, and the Cup operation was rebranded Garage 66 in January 2025. The team runs part-time, so its line-up depends on sponsors for each race.

MBM Motorsports is an American stock car team that operates under the Motorsports Business Management name and sometimes appears as Garage 66, Power Source or Carl Long Motorsports. It currently competes in the NASCAR Cup Series, the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and the ARCA Menards Series West, with cars that are often shared by a rotating group of drivers.

The team is a family enterprise at heart. Derek White and Carl Long created it in 2014, and since early 2016 it has been run by Long and his family. The officially listed owner is Long's father, Horace. The team has used many car numbers and sponsors, which is typical of a part-time operation that depends on race-by-race funding. Over the years it has also competed in the Xfinity Series, the ARCA Menards Series and the ARCA Menards Series East, so its record spans several tiers of the sport.

How did MBM Motorsports begin?

Derek White and Carl Long set up Motorsports Business Management before the 2014 Drive to Stop Diabetes 300 at Bristol. In 2014 the team fielded a truck for White at Homestead, finishing 27th. Its early work was built around the Xfinity Series and start-and-park entries, which were a way to earn a place without the cost of a full race effort.

Until the end of 2018 the team ran Dodge cars on a limited basis, using engines leased from Team Penske. It switched to Toyotas in 2019, and Carl Long appealed to the manufacturer for support.

The team grew in 2015, when Rick Ware and Curtis Key joined White and Long as partners and MBM ran two full-time cars. The No. 40 Xfinity entry was a start-and-park car that helped fund the No. 13. Derek White debuted it at Daytona, finishing 22nd. The following season the No. 40 was driven by Alon Day, the first Israeli driver to race in a NASCAR national series, who finished 13th at Mid-Ohio after a strong run in rain.

In November 2016 MBM announced plans for Mark Thompson to race in the 2017 season-opening ARCA race at Daytona. That was rumoured to be his final ARCA start, but he returned for Talladega in May.

Built by a family and a handful of partners, the team has kept its cars on the grid through driver changes, sponsor gaps and several renumberings.

How did the Cup No. 13 car appear?

When the No. 13 became available after Germain Racing shut down, MBM renumbered its car again in 2021. Garrett Smithley tried the Daytona 500 but got caught up in a crash with Gragson, and both drivers missed the race. David Starr drove at Nashville and finished 35th, and Timmy Hill scored the team's best finish of 27th at Texas.

What did the No. 13 Xfinity car do?

In the team's debut the No. 13 was driven by Matt Carter, who finished 37th after a brake problem forced him out. In 2015 the car ran with several drivers, some of whom used older 2012 Toyota Camrys to save money. Brad Teague ran one of those cars at the Food City 300, finishing 26th, and the team was the last in the Nationwide Series to use that body style.

The No. 13 went through many drivers. Mark Thompson led his first Xfinity lap during the Subway Firecracker 250 in 2016, and Timmy Hill signed for the rest of that season. In 2019 Max Tullman, Joe Nemechek and Tommy Joe Martins joined the car, and Tullman's 28th at Daytona was the team's best finish of that year. In 2020 Chad Finchum drove most of the schedule, and the team posted an 11th at Talladega.

In 2021 David Starr ran most of the season, and Loris Hezemans and Matt Jaskol made their series debuts. In 2022 Jaskol finished 18th at Dover, which was the car's best finish at the time, and Hill took second in an August race at Daytona, behind underdog winner Jeremy Clements.

Why did the team move into Cup racing in 2017?

In the off-season MBM bought an HScott Motorsports car, and in May 2017 Long announced a Cup entry, the No. 66 Chevrolet SS, for the Kansas race. The number was a tribute to Mark Thompson, and the paint scheme closely followed the No. 46 car Long had driven in the Cup Series earlier in his career. Long qualified 40th and finished 31st. NASCAR also ordered a sponsor removed after the entry paperwork misspelled the company name.

In May 2017 Austin Wayne Self joined the No. 40 for an Xfinity debut at Charlotte, though Long took over that car for the race. At the June Dover race, K&N Pro Series East driver Chad Finchum made his first Xfinity start in the No. 40.

Timmy Hill took over the No. 66 for Dover, finishing 28th, and then ran the Brickyard 400 after several restarts from the back. He came home 14th, the best Cup result for the team to that point. Mark Thompson also drove a Richard Petty Motorsports car to 22nd in the 2017 Daytona 500, his best career Cup finish.

What happened to the No. 66 from 2019 to 2021?

In 2019 Joey Gase drove the No. 66 part-time, using engines bought from the Triad Racing Technologies buyout. He failed to qualify for the Daytona 500. In 2020 Timmy Hill made the Daytona 500 field through Duel 2, where he finished sixteenth, and he posted two top-20 finishes, at Bristol and Talladega.

In 2021 Hill was named to run full-time, but the team could not complete a full season because it lacked sponsorship. Chad Finchum and David Starr shared the car across the year, and Mike Marlar made his series debut at the Bristol dirt track. Hill returned for a handful of races, finishing 35th and 37th at the Pocono doubleheader.

How did the 2022 and 2023 seasons go?

In 2022 Hill tried to race the Daytona 500 with a sponsor but did not qualify. Road course specialist Boris Said then drove the car at COTA, finishing 26th. J. J. Yeley had more sponsorship and was announced as the full-time driver of the No. 66 later that year.

In 2023 the team used a long list of drivers for the No. 66, including Mason Maggio, Caesar Bacarella, Cameron Lawrence, Mason Filippi, Sage Karam and Ryan Newman. Hill qualified for four of the nine races he attempted.

What did the 2024 Cup season look like?

In 2024 Hill was set to drive the No. 66 at COTA, while David Starr drove at Martinsville, finishing 37th after a steering problem. B. J. McLeod joined for the Coca-Cola 600, finishing 37th in a rain-shortened event. Josh Bilicki took the car to a 28th at the Chicago street course, and Chad Finchum returned at Nashville for his first start in the Next Gen car.

McLeod drove again at the Brickyard 400 with Coble Enterprises as sponsor, finishing 39th after a blown engine. When the Richmond entry list came out, Parker Retzlaff made his Cup debut for the team, with XINSURANCE as primary sponsor. Bilicki's 29th at the Charlotte Roval was the team's second-best result of the season.

How did the team become Garage 66?

In November 2024 MBM announced it would attempt the 2025 Daytona 500, using an engine leased from Roush-Yates Engines. Mike Wallace was named for the car, but NASCAR ruled him ineligible for the race because of his inactivity in major professional motorsport. On 18 January 2025 the Cup team was rebranded as Garage 66.

During 2025 Garrett Smithley drove at the Cook Out Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium, Chandler Smith tried the Daytona 500 without qualifying, and Casey Mears drove at Martinsville in the spring. Josh Bilicki, Chad Finchum, David Starr and Joey Gase also filled in during the year.

What is the team's 2026 Cup plan?

On 3 February 2026 it was announced that Casey Mears would try to qualify the No. 66 for the 2026 Daytona 500. Mears finished eighth in his Duel and made the field, then finished 32nd in the race. On 11 March 2026 Timmy Hill was announced for the car at Darlington.

What is the No. 69 truck programme?

The team's Truck Series history includes a No. 82 entry for White at Homestead in 2014, and a No. 67 truck for Jeffrey Earnhardt at Charlotte in 2024, which was promoted to 35th after a post-race disqualification. In 2025 the No. 69 ran part-time for Tyler Tomassi and Derek White. Tomassi finished 24th at Pocono, and Casey Mears made his Truck debut in the No. 69 at Martinsville.

In 2026 Tomassi finished 29th at Atlanta, and Jonathan Shafer drove the car at Rockingham and Nashville. Dystany Spurlock drove a Ford to 36th at Dover after failing to qualify at Watkins Glen with a Toyota.

How did the ARCA programme develop?

In the ARCA Menards Series, the team's No. 66 raced at Daytona with Mark Thompson in 2017, qualifying 15th before a nine-car crash on lap 49 left him 31st. In 2018 Thompson returned to the car at the Lucas Oil 200 but was taken out in a late crash. The No. 13 entered the ARCA series in 2024, when Armani Williams finished 13th at Daytona after a last-lap crash.

In 2026 the team fielded the No. 66 for Derek White at Daytona, where he started sixth and finished 39th after a mechanical failure. Dystany Spurlock made her ARCA Menards Series debut at Kansas in the same car, and she was announced for the ARCA East debut at Hickory in March. The team also announced her ARCA West debut at Phoenix in October.
