The short answer

Gene Haas founded the team in April 2014, and it made its debut in the 2016 season. The squad is based in Kannapolis, North Carolina, runs a design office in Maranello and buys its power units from Ferrari. Its best Constructors' Championship finish is fifth, in 2018.

Haas F1 Team is an American-licensed constructor set up by Gene Haas, the NASCAR Cup Series team owner, in April 2014. It made its debut in the 2016 season and has run Ferrari power units for most of its history, with a Toyota technical partnership joining from 2026.

Where did the Haas team come from?

The company is headquartered in Kannapolis, North Carolina, about 31 miles (50 km) from Charlotte. It shares that town with the separate NASCAR entrant Haas Factory Team, although the two operations are different legal entities.

The team set up a forward base in Banbury, England, after buying the headquarters of the failed Marussia team following its collapse in 2014. That base lets the squad turn cars around between races during the European part of the calendar.

Haas also maintains a design office in Maranello, which is home to Scuderia Ferrari's headquarters. The location matters because the team's technical relationship with Ferrari is one of the defining features of its operation.

Haas was the first American constructor to submit an entry after the failed US F1 project of 2010. It became the first American constructor to compete since the unrelated Haas Lola outfit raced in 1985 and 1986.

A team built on a lean model and a Ferrari supply line, which came of age with a fourth place in Mexico.

How did the team win a place on the grid?

Guenther Steiner drew up a formal business plan during the late 2000s recession, setting out how a new team could be run on a lean financial model. Niki Lauda and Jean Todt were among the figures whose support helped secure the approval the entry needed.

The car was built with a chassis from the Italian manufacturer Dallara, and the power unit came from Ferrari. The team shook down its car in December 2015, ahead of pre-season testing at Barcelona in early 2016, and it confirmed that the car had passed the mandatory FIA crash tests in January 2016.

Steiner was team principal for ten years. He had been technical director at Jaguar and Red Bull Racing before taking the role, and he resigned in January 2024, when the team's direction changed under a new leader.

How did the team start in 2016 and 2017?

Romain Grosjean and Esteban Gutierrez drove for the team in 2016. In the opening race in Australia Grosjean finished sixth and scored eight points, which made Haas the first American constructor to score in its first Formula One race.

The rest of 2016 was harder. Haas only scored on three more occasions, and Grosjean collected all 29 points that the team finished with, which left it eighth in the Constructors' Championship.

Kevin Magnussen replaced Gutierrez for 2017. Grosjean qualified sixth in Australia, the team's best-ever qualifying effort, but both cars retired with mechanical failures in the race. The second race brought Magnussen's eighth place, his first points since 2016.

The team's first double points finish came at Monaco in 2017, with Grosjean eighth and Magnussen tenth. Haas finished eighth in the Constructors' Championship for a second successive year, after Renault overtook it in the final races.

How did 2018 become the team's best season?

In February 2018 Haas unveiled the VF-18, and the design drew complaints because it looked like the Ferrari SF70H from the year before. Some rivals called for an investigation, although the matter did not go further.

Haas had a strong showing in Australia, where Magnussen started fifth and Grosjean sixth. Both cars were running fourth and fifth when they retired one lap after their pit stops, and Steiner later said the crew had cross-threaded the wheel nuts on both cars.

The team matched the fourth and fifth result in Austria, which took its points tally past the 2017 total after only nine races. At Singapore Magnussen set the team's first fastest lap, and the squad finished fifth in the Constructors' Championship.

That fifth place was one point short of doubling the previous year's performance, which made 2018 the best season to date.

What happened in 2019 and 2020?

Rich Energy, a British energy drink company, became the title sponsor for 2019 and the team competed as Rich Energy Haas F1 Team. In July 2019 the company announced that the deal had been terminated, citing poor performance. The team and the company's shareholders denied the statement, which they called the work of a rogue individual.

Magnussen finished sixth in Australia, the best result of the 2019 season. The team went on to finish ninth in the Constructors' Championship with 28 points, after Rich Energy was found to have plagiarised a logo and then ended its deal.

The 2020 season opened with a serious accident for Grosjean at the Bahrain Grand Prix. On the first lap he collided with AlphaTauri's Daniil Kvyat and went through the barriers, and the car split in two and burst into flames.

Grosjean escaped with burns to his hands and spent time in hospital. He later said the halo head protection device had likely saved his life, and the crash ended his season, with Pietro Fittipaldi driving at Sakhir and Abu Dhabi.

Haas scored 3 points in 2020 and finished ninth in the Constructors' Championship again.

Why was 2021 so difficult?

Grosjean and Magnussen left at the end of 2020. They were replaced by Nikita Mazepin, who was Russian, and Formula 2 champion Mick Schumacher, the son of the seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher. To survive financially the team halted development of the 2021 car and focused its resources on 2022.

The title sponsor was Uralkali, a Russian potash producer. Its livery carried the colours of the Russian flag, which Steiner denied was meant to get round a ban on the flag and anthem imposed after a state-sponsored doping scandal.

Mazepin spun out on the first lap of the opening race, while Schumacher finished last of the cars still running. Haas scored no points and finished tenth in the Constructors' Championship, its worst finish since its founding and its lowest ever points total.

How did the team recover in 2022?

After Russia invaded Ukraine, Haas removed the Uralkali branding and the Russian colours from its cars. On 5 March 2022 the team ended both the title sponsorship and Mazepin's driver contract, and Kevin Magnussen returned to take his place.

The VF-22 was competitive among the midfield teams because the team had focused its 2021 work on it. Magnussen finished fifth in Bahrain and ninth in Saudi Arabia, and Schumacher was unable to score in either race.

A double points finish came at the British Grand Prix, where Magnussen was tenth and Schumacher eighth. In Austria Magnussen was eighth and Schumacher sixth, and Haas also took its maiden pole position at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, where Magnussen qualified first in changing conditions.

Magnussen later retired after a collision with Daniel Ricciardo at the start of that race. The back-to-back double points finishes placed Haas eighth in the Constructors' Championship, and Schumacher left the team at the end of the season.

What happened in 2023?

The team signed a title sponsorship with the payments company MoneyGram for 2023 and raced as MoneyGram Haas F1 Team. Nico Hulkenberg returned to Formula One, partnering Magnussen after the Abu Dhabi round of 2022 announced his comeback.

The VF-23 had heavy tyre wear, which dropped its drivers down the order even after strong qualifying runs. At the Canadian Grand Prix Hulkenberg set the second-fastest time in a wet qualifying session, but a red flag infringement cost him three grid places and he finished near the back.

The team finished tenth in the Constructors' Championship with 12 points. Haas scored points only five times, and Hulkenberg's seventh place in Australia was the best result of the season.

How did 2024 change the team?

Guenther Steiner's contract was not renewed, and the engineer Ayao Komatsu took over as team principal on 10 January 2024. Technical director Simone Resta also left the team that year.

In August 2024 it was reported that Haas had to repay about US$9 million to its former title sponsor, Uralkali, for a cancelled deal. Dutch bailiffs and police entered the paddock during the Dutch Grand Prix weekend to value the team's assets, until the payment was confirmed on 23 August and Uralkali acknowledged receipt on 26 August.

Magnussen picked up penalty points for a collision at the Italian Grand Prix, which took him to a one-race ban. Oliver Bearman, a reserve driver, replaced him at Baku. The team finished seventh with 58 points, its best total since 2018.

What did 2025 bring?

Hulkenberg left for Kick Sauber, and Oliver Bearman, a Formula 2 graduate and former reserve driver, became the first rookie the team had taken on since 2021. Esteban Ocon, who had left Alpine after five seasons with the team, took Magnussen's seat.

The opening race in Melbourne was a poor one. Ocon was last of the classified drivers in qualifying and Bearman was not classified after gearbox problems. In China the drivers scored, finishing seventh and tenth, and three rivals were later disqualified, which promoted them to fifth and eighth.

Bearman then finished fourth in Mexico, the team's second fourth-place finish since it entered the sport. Haas finished 2025 with 79 points, which was more than in 2024, yet the team dropped from seventh to eighth in the table.

What changed with Toyota for 2026?

In October 2024 Haas announced a technical partnership with Toyota Gazoo Racing. Toyota would provide design, technical and manufacturing services in return for Haas's technical expertise and commercial benefits, and in December 2025 the team signed TGR as its title sponsor for 2026.

The arrangement brought the Toyota name back to Formula One for the first time in 15 years, since its factory team withdrew at the end of 2009. Ryo Hirakawa was signed as a test driver for 2025 under the deal.

For 2026 Haas kept Ocon and Bearman, and it signed the former Alpine driver Jack Doohan as reserve driver. The team is named TGR Haas F1 Team, even though TGR reverted to the name Gazoo Racing at the start of the year.

What is Haas's legacy?

The Haas model of close work with Ferrari drew praise for showing that a low-cost team could enter the sport and compete. It also drew criticism from privateer teams that had invested in their own facilities and from rivals who saw it as a satellite operation.

The team has drawn on Ferrari's young drivers for practice. Charles Leclerc, Antonio Giovinazzi, Callum Ilott and Robert Shwartzman all took part in sessions, and Bearman, a former Ferrari junior, became a race driver for the team in 2024 and 2025.
