The short answer

The Renault Zoe was a Clio-based electric supermini with deliveries from December 2012 to a 2024 end, while the Fiat 500e launched in Milan in March 2020 on a new platform with a 42 kWh battery. The Zoe holds the bigger European sales record, but the 500e offers the newer design and the Abarth performance variant.

The Renault Zoe and the Fiat 500e were small electric cars for city streets from two European makers. The Zoe was a Clio-based five-door that sold for nearly twelve years, while the 500e arrived in 2020 on a new platform with a retro shape.

Where did each car come from?

The Zoe began as a set of concepts. Renault showed a Zoe City Car at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show, a three-seat open-top urban car with no link to the later electric model. The electric Zoe Concept followed at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, and a revised Zoe Preview appeared at the 2010 Paris Motor Show.

A production-ready Zoe was announced at Geneva in March 2012, and retail deliveries began in France that December. The car was built at Flins on the same line as the Clio and the Nissan Micra, at a rate of about 170 cars a day.

The Fiat 500e took a different route. It is the third-generation 500 city car, following the original 500 of 1957 to 1975 and the second-generation 500 of 2007 to 2024. Its launch was meant for Geneva, but the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled that show, and the car was unveiled instead on 4 March 2020 in Milan.

Production started at the Mirafiori plant in Turin in February 2020, a few weeks before Italy's lockdown paused work. Fiat's parent group announced 700 million euros for a new Mirafiori line in July 2019, with planned capacity of 80,000 electric 500s a year.

A Clio-based electric supermini with a long record against a new-platform Fiat built for the next decade.

How did the two cars differ in size and platform?

The Zoe is a five-door supermini that measures 4080 mm long, a little longer than the Clio it shares its base with. Its design is credited to Jean Semeriva, and its shape stayed close to the Preview shown in 2010.

The 500e rides on a newly designed platform and is a touch larger than the car it replaced. Compared with the second-generation 500, it is 60 mm longer, 60 mm wider and 40 mm taller, with a 20 mm increase in wheelbase.

Fiat offered the 500e in several body styles. The La Prima cabriolet, a four-seater, came first and was limited to 500 examples per country. Later came a three-door hatchback in June 2020 and a four-door 3+1 hatchback with a small rear-hinged door on the passenger side.

How far could each car go?

The Zoe's first battery was a 22 kWh lithium-ion pack, good for 210 km (130 mi) on the NEDC cycle. A 41 kWh pack announced in September 2016 raised that to 400 km (250 mi) NEDC, and the 2019 ZE 50 carried a 55 kWh battery with 52 kWh usable and a claimed 385 km (239 mi) under WLTP.

The 500e is rated at 320 km (199 mi) on the European WLTP combined cycle, and it reaches 400 km (249 mi) on the urban part of that test, a section that generally favours electric cars. Most versions use a 42 kWh battery pack and an 87 kW (117 hp) motor, while the entry UK Action trim has a smaller 24 kWh battery.

The two cars took different routes to range. The Zoe grew its battery over time with the ZE 40 and ZE 50, while most 500e trims share a single 42 kWh pack.

How much did they cost?

At launch in France, the Zoe was priced from 20,700 euros (US$27,250) before a government incentive of 6,300 euros (US$8,300) is deducted, and a battery fee applies each month. Leasing the battery over 36 months started at 79 euros (US$104) a month for 12,500 km a year.

The 500e's Italian La Prima launch edition was priced at 37,900 euros before incentives. In the UK the three-door range ran from 22,995 pounds for the Action with a smaller battery to 30,495 pounds for La Prima, with the Passion and Icon models priced between them.

Zoe buyers in the UK could buy the car with its battery or lease the battery alone. Leasing also gave a free replacement if the battery capacity fell below 80 per cent.

How did the two cars charge?

The Zoe used a Chameleon onboard charger, which reuses the motor power electronics to charge the battery. Charging on AC can be made at any level up to 43 kW, and a full charge takes between 30 minutes and nine hours depending on the supply.

The Chameleon charger has real downsides. The grid and battery share no isolation barrier, so the car refuses to charge when the ground to neutral resistance is above 100 ohm, and a wrongly wired three-phase supply can damage its relay, a fault that a multimeter can confirm.

Fast charging came later for the Zoe. The ZE 50 offered a 50 kW DC option through CCS2, and the 2017 facelift kept a rapid charge option at 43 kW. The 500e's Action trim charges at up to 50 kW, while the Abarth version reaches rates up to 85 kW.

What changed in the Zoe's later years?

The Zoe's 41 kWh battery was unveiled at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. Developed by Renault and LG Chem and assembled at the Flins plant, it weighed 300 kg (661 lb) and was paired with the R75/90 motor, a unit whose name referred to its 55 to 66 kW output range.

Renault said the bigger pack delivered about 300 km (190 mi) in real driving, and older Zoes received a smaller range gain because of design upgrades. Owners could buy the new battery or take it on revised lease plans.

The 2018 R110 motor lifted power to 80 kW (110 PS) while keeping similar economy and torque of 225 Nm (166 lb ft). It was the first Renault motor certified under WLTP, and the ZE 50 added the R135 motor and a 52 kWh battery in 2019, with a claimed 385 km (239 mi) WLTP range.

Mild updates followed in mid-2022, and the car's run ended with production stopping on 30 March 2024, after nearly twelve years. Renault replaced it with the retro-styled Renault 5 E-Tech.

Which electric city car sold better?

The Zoe has the stronger published sales record. It became the top-selling all-electric car in France from 2013, and by June 2020 it had more than 100,000 French registrations. It was also the best-selling all-electric car in Europe in 2015 and 2016.

Early numbers were modest but steady. The Zoe registered 5,559 units in France through December 2013, and it accounted for 62.8 per cent of French electric car sales that year. Deliveries in the UK began in March 2013, and Germany, Italy and Spain followed in April.

The 500e has had a stronger run in Italy. By August 2022 it was the best-selling electric car there, but its record in Europe and especially the United States has been weaker, with fewer than 500 US units sold in 2024.

The 500e has to be read against a crowded market. Fiat lists the BMW i3, Honda e, Mini Electric, Peugeot e-208, Renault Twingo Electric, the Zoe, Smart Forfour and the Volkswagen Group small family cars as its direct rivals, with the Zoe among them.

How did the two cars fare on safety?

The Zoe earned a five-star Euro NCAP rating in 2013 for its standard European configuration. The updated car scored zero stars in a 2021 test, making it the third car in the programme's history to record zero stars.

The 500e is billed as the first city car with level 2 autonomous driving, and its driver aids include autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, intelligent speed assistance, lane control and adaptive cruise control with lane centring.

German police linked a 2023 garage explosion in Neuss to a parked Zoe, saying a defect in its battery caused a fire and that gas from the battery led to the blast. The Zoe's record also includes that 2023 investigation.

Was either car quick?

The Zoe's motors grew through its life, from the 65 kW Q210 to an 80 kW R110 in 2018 and a 100 kW R135 in the ZE 50. The top speed of the original Q210 car was 135 km/h (84 mph), and the 2009 concept was described with a 145 km/h (90 mph) top speed.

The Fiat 500e Abarth is the sporting option. It makes 113.7 kW (152.5 hp) and 235 Nm (173 lbf ft), which is 26.7 kW (35.8 hp) and 15 Nm (11 lbf ft) more than the standard motor, and it reaches 100 km/h in 7 seconds. Fiat's Scorpionissima edition was limited to 1,949 examples.

Zoe's sporting side was a concept. The Zoe E-Sport, shown at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, used two motors and all-wheel drive for a combined 340 kW (456 bhp), but it remained a concept.

Which buyer should choose which?

A buyer who values a long track record, a shorter list of battery choices and the Zoe's place in European sales history will find the Renault the safer bet. Its battery choices, from 22 kWh to 55 kWh, give a buyer a clear range of options.

A buyer who wants the newer platform, a larger body in the 500e's case, a range of body styles and an Abarth variant with a 7-second sprint will find the Fiat more interesting. The 500e also brings UConnect 5 on a 10.25-inch touchscreen.

The facts do not settle which car is better overall. The Zoe built the longer record and a stronger European reputation, while the 500e offered the newer platform and the sportier variant. The Zoe's production ended in 2024, while Mirafiori output of the 500e has been paused.
