The short answer

Toyota's bZ4X is an electric crossover that shares the e-TNGA platform with Subaru. It went on sale in 2022 after a 2021 concept, and the 2025 refresh improved charging and power.

The Toyota bZ4X is a battery electric compact crossover SUV built by Toyota. A Subaru version is sold as the Solterra, and Lexus offers a sibling called the RZ. It was the first vehicle on the e-TNGA platform, which the two companies developed together, and it was the first car in Toyota's bZ range of zero-emission models.

The bZ4X has had a difficult and eventful life. It reached buyers in 2022, faced criticism over its charging speed and was recalled over wheels that could come loose. A major refresh in 2025 addressed many of those complaints, and the model was renamed the Toyota bZ in North America and Ireland.

Where did the bZ4X name and concept come from?

The name breaks down into three parts. The bZ stands for beyond Zero, a reference to the battery electric nature of the car. The 4 comes from the RAV4, whose size the car matches, and the X describes it as a compact crossover SUV.

The bZ4X Concept was revealed on 19 April 2021 at Auto Shanghai, and it looked close to production-ready from the start. Toyota had previewed the design through a series of electric concepts in June 2019 and had planned six electric vehicles by 2025, a target it did not reach.

An electric crossover born on a shared Toyota and Subaru platform that needed a refresh to fix its charging.

What is the bZ4X platform and how is it built?

The e-TNGA platform, which Toyota and Subaru co-developed, debuted under this car. Toyota took credit for battery and e-axle development, while Subaru contributed the all-wheel-drive control and collision safety work.

At 4,690 mm (185 in) long, the car is about the size of the RAV4, but a 2,850 mm (112 in) wheelbase, close to the Land Cruiser's, gives it a large interior. Some markets offered steer-by-wire with a yoke in place of a conventional wheel, a system developed for China.

Toyota said the low instrument panel gave the cabin a more open feel with the yoke fitted. The 2025 refresh removed the plastic frame that separated the wheel from the gauge cluster, which had been criticised.

How do the bZ4X motors work?

The e-Axle integrates the motor, gears and inverter, and it was made by BluE Nexus, a joint venture between the Toyota group companies Aisin and Denso. Front-drive models use a single 1XM e-Axle rated at 150 kW (201 hp), while all-wheel-drive versions use two 1YM units rated at 80 kW (107 hp) each.

The combined output of the AWD car is 160 kW (215 hp; 218 PS). AWD versions carry the X-MODE all-wheel-drive system, which was sourced from the Subaru Forester and is the reason the system works so well on slippery surfaces.

Both battery types run at 355 volts. The front-drive car uses a 71.4 kWh pack from Prime Planet Energy and Solutions, a joint venture between Toyota and Panasonic, while the North American AWD car uses a 72.8 kWh pack from CATL.

How far can the bZ4X go and how fast does it charge?

The front-drive model has an estimated range of 510 km (317 miles) and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds. The AWD version is rated at 460 km (286 miles) and 6.9 seconds to 100 km/h.

Charging was the main criticism at launch. The Toyota-built battery could reach 80% in about 30 minutes at a fast charger, but the North American CATL pack was slower, taking up to an hour to charge from 0 to 80%. Those vehicles were also limited to three fast-charging sessions a day.

These range figures are manufacturer estimates, and each market uses its own test cycle, such as WLTP in Europe or CLTC in China. Toyota said the battery should keep 90% of its capacity over ten years. An optional roof solar panel can add roughly 1,800 km (1,100 miles) of range a year, and the car was first promoted with the ability to act as a power source for a home.

That bidirectional function was not enabled on the 2023, 2024 and 2025 models as of July 2025. Toyota was testing it with utilities in San Diego and Maryland.

What changed in the 2025 refresh?

Toyota announced a mid-cycle refresh in May 2025. The changes run through the drivetrain, styling and cabin, so it is a broad revision rather than a cosmetic update, and it renamed the North American and Irish models simply as the Toyota bZ. The biggest change was to DC fast charging, which now takes the battery from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes, helped by a better charging curve and battery pre-conditioning through an upgraded heat pump.

Charging still tops out at 150 kW, and the onboard AC charger has gone from 7.6 kW to 11 kW. North American cars use the NACS port on the front right side, along with Plug and Charge, which improves compatibility with the Tesla Supercharger network.

The refreshed battery holds 74.7 kWh and is quoted at 505 km (314 miles) by Toyota. It is standard on every grade except the base XLE FWD, which keeps a 57.7 kWh battery, and a new XLE FWD Plus adds the larger pack. That brings the lineup to five trims.

Power also rose. The AWD model is now rated at 338 hp (343 PS), a 50% increase, with 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds, and the front-drive car reaches up to 221 hp (224 PS). Interior changes include a 14-inch infotainment screen and physical knobs for volume and climate control.

Exterior changes include Toyota's hammerhead-style front fascia, and the black plastic overfenders have been replaced by colour-matched panels on selected colours.

Where is the bZ4X sold?

In Japan the car was offered only on lease through Kinto from 12 May 2022, with up to 3,000 applications accepted in the first phase. A facelifted version launched on 9 October 2025 with Z and G grades, and the G is front-drive only.

In North America the car was unveiled at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show and went on sale in mid-2022 as a 2023 model. US buyers initially qualified for the full US$7,500 federal tax subsidy, although the bZ4X later lost eligibility for Inflation Reduction Act incentives because it is made in Japan.

In Europe the car was delivered from summer 2022. Under the WLTP cycle the 2026 front-drive bZ4X reaches 444 km (276 miles) with the 57.7 kWh battery and 569 km (354 miles) with the 73.1 kWh battery, while the four-wheel-drive model achieves 516 km (321 miles).

South Africa launched the car on 3 July 2026 with the 73.1 kWh battery, alongside the Touring model. In Southeast Asia the car arrived in stages. Indonesia showed it at the 29th Gaikindo show and launched it on 10 November 2022, and the facelifted model is built locally there from November 2025. Thailand followed on 9 November 2022, and the Philippines and Malaysia launched it in December 2025 and April 2026.

In Australia imports from Japan began in 2024, and the bZ4X was offered in a single trim. In May 2025 the mining company Fortescue began using a pre-facelift car as a transport vehicle, with all-terrain tyres, a spare wheel and hi-vis decals.

In China the car is built by GAC Toyota and FAW Toyota, using CATL batteries of 50.3 kWh and 66.7 kWh. Chinese versions reached CLTC ranges of 400 km (250 mi) and 615 km (382 mi), and an update in November 2023 added four-wheel drive and removed the smaller battery.

What is the Subaru Solterra and the longer bZ4X?

The Subaru Solterra is the rebadged version of the bZ4X. It uses the same platform, renamed e-Subaru Global Platform, and it has minor design changes including regenerative paddles, a squared steering wheel and a reworked front end and rear lights. It went on sale in mid-2022 in Japan, the US, Canada, Europe and China. Subaru keeps its own EyeSight branding for the collision avoidance system, although the underlying technology is the same Toyota Safety Sense.

In Japan, unlike the bZ4X, the Solterra is available for purchase, in ET-SS (front-drive and AWD) and ET-HS (AWD only) grades.

The Solterra was refreshed in April 2025 for the 2026 model year. Its range rose by 25%, power increased to 233 hp (236 PS) and a new XT trim provides 338 hp (343 PS) from its dual motors.

A longer version, sold as the bZ Woodland in North America and the bZ4X Touring in Europe, was introduced on 15 May 2025. It is 140 mm (5.5 in) longer and 20 mm (0.79 in) taller than the standard car, with roof rails, 8.3 inches (210 mm) of ground clearance and a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds (1,590 kg).

The Subaru Trailseeker covers the extended car for North America, Japan and Australia, and the E-Outback does the same job in Europe. The Trailseeker went on sale in Australia on 10 April 2026.

Did the bZ4X have safety problems?

On 23 June 2022 Toyota and Subaru recalled 2,700 bZ4X and 2,600 Solterra cars because wheels could come loose. Production and sales were halted until a fix was found, and the companies resumed production on 6 October 2022.

On the ratings side, the car earned five stars from Euro NCAP in 2022, a five-star JNCAP rating for the Solterra, and a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS for the 2025 model year.
