The short answer

The Toyota Corolla E210 is the twelfth generation of the Corolla compact, sold as a hatchback, saloon and estate from 2018. It rides on the GA-C platform, offers petrol and hybrid engines, and gained the high-performance GR Corolla hatchback in 2022.

The twelfth-generation Corolla, coded E210, arrived in 2018 in three body styles. It was the first Corolla built on Toyota's GA-C platform, and it carried the nameplate into an era of hybrid powertrains.

When did the E210 Corolla arrive?

The E210 debuted at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show as a pre-production hatchback, and the production hatchback followed in New York on 28 March 2018. Development was led by chief engineer Yasushi Ueda. The platform was shared with the fourth-generation Prius and the C-HR.

The saloon debuted on 15 and 16 November 2018 in California's Carmel-by-the-Sea and at the Guangzhou show in China. The estate, called Touring Sports in most markets, appeared at the 2018 Paris Motor Show.

By 2020 the twelfth generation was the world's best-selling passenger vehicle, holding a 1.6% global market share.

A compact that moved from a Geneva debut to the top of the world sales charts, then gained a performance hatch.

What body styles does the E210 come in?

The E210 comes as a hatchback, a saloon and an estate. The hatchback was first branded as the Auris in Europe and is sold as the Corolla Sport in Japan, while the estate is called Touring Sports in most markets and Touring in Japan.

The saloon was offered in two versions that Toyota called internally Prestige and Sporty. The Prestige, sold in China, Taiwan, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and parts of South America and Southeast Asia, has a front end closer to the XV70 Camry, a choice made after research showed buyers in those markets preferred a more prestigious look.

The Sporty saloon shares its front with the hatchback and estate. Markets for it include North America, Japan, Australia, South Africa and China, where it takes the name Levin. Taiwan and Southeast Asia sell the Prestige saloon as the Corolla Altis.

A Corolla Trek estate arrived at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show with raised suspension and a roof rack.

How did the design change from the previous car?

The GA-C platform lowered the base of the windscreen by 40 mm (1.6 in) and reduced the height of the dashboard for styling reasons and better visibility. The seats were lowered by 25 mm (1.0 in) so that head clearance matched the previous generation.

Japanese versions were reworked for the home market. The saloon and Touring were 135 to 145 mm (5.3 to 5.7 in) shorter and 45 to 55 mm (1.8 to 2.2 in) narrower than the global cars, with a 5 m (16.4 ft) minimum turning radius. Their door mirrors were angled to fold closer to the body for narrow parking spaces.

Even so, the saloon's width of 1,745 mm (68.7 in) and the hatchback's 1,790 mm (70.5 in) took them beyond the exterior limits of Japan's small-car class.

Which engines were offered?

Depending on the market, the E210 used a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine (8NR-FTS), a 1.8-litre hybrid (2ZR-FXE), a 2.0-litre Dynamic Force petrol (M20A-FKS) or a 2.0-litre Dynamic Force hybrid (M20A-FXS). Europe never received a diesel option.

Hybrid output changed between generations. The earlier hybrid system produced a combined 90 kW (122 PS; 121 hp), while the newer fifth-generation unit reached 103 kW (140 PS; 138 hp). The 2.0-litre hybrid sold in Europe was rated at 144 kW (196 PS; 193 hp).

North American hatchbacks used the 2.0-litre M20A-FKS, which peaked at 6,600 rpm with 169 hp (126 kW). The engine was offered with a six-speed intelligent manual or a continuously variable transmission, and the hatchback did not offer a hybrid or all-wheel drive in that market.

North American saloons followed a different pattern. The L, LE and XLE grades used a 1.8-litre 2ZR-FAE with the older K313 CVT, the hybrid LE used the 2ZR-FXE with an eCVT, and the sporty SE and XSE grades took the 2.0-litre M20A-FKS.

How did the North American transmission work?

The North American hatchback paired the 2.0-litre engine with a six-speed intelligent manual or the K120 Direct Shift CVT. The Direct Shift unit has a physical first gear, called a launch gear, and nine simulated gears, giving ten ratios in total.

The launch gear engages when the car pulls away from a stop, and the belt drive takes over as speed builds. Conventional CVTs are less efficient at low ratios, so this arrangement narrows the belt's working range and cuts belt angles and loads. The design brought a 6% fuel efficiency improvement.

Shift speeds rose as a result. Buyers who wanted a manual could still choose the six-speed iMT on the sporty SE and XSE trims.

Why was a hybrid added in North America?

The twelfth-generation Corolla was the first version of the car sold in the United States with a hybrid engine. The model was revealed at the November 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show, and its drivetrain is almost the same as the Prius's.

Its rating of 52 mpg-US (4.5 L/100 km; 62 mpg-imp) matched the base Prius. The Corolla sells in much higher volumes than the Prius, so a hybrid version helped the company meet its corporate average fuel economy targets.

Research carried out by Toyota suggested that Hispanic buyers liked the Corolla more than the Prius. In Saudi Arabia, where a hybrid joined the range in July 2019, the hybrid was rated at 27.6 km/l.

How was the Corolla sold in Japan and China?

In Japan the hatchback was sold as the Corolla Sport, exclusively at Toyota Corolla Store dealerships, from 27 June 2018. The saloon and Touring launched on 17 September 2019 and were shorter and narrower than the global models, which set them apart from the export cars.

Japanese hatchbacks offered the 1.2-litre turbo or the 1.8-litre hybrid, and the 1.2-litre cars could also be ordered with full-time four-wheel drive and a CVT-i. The top 2WD G-Z could take adaptive variable suspension and a drive mode selector spanning Eco through to Sport S+.

A limited 2000 Limited version of the Touring arrived in May 2020. It used the 2.0-litre M20A-FKS, the first 2.0-litre engine offered in Japan for the Corolla, paired with a CVT that simulated ten gears. Toyota built 500 of them.

In China the saloon was made by two joint ventures. FAW Toyota built the Prestige-styled Corolla, while GAC Toyota produced the Sporty-styled Levin, and both went on sale on 8 August 2019. Long-wheelbase versions followed in November 2020 as the Allion and the Levin GT.

What was the European line-up like?

The hatchback and estate were built at Toyota Manufacturing UK in Burnaston, while the saloon came from Turkey. European hatchback production began on 14 January 2019, and UK sales started that February. Engines for UK cars were made in Deeside, Wales.

The 1.2-litre turbo was discontinued in the UK in December 2019, which made every UK trim a full hybrid. The saloon's only powertrain in Europe was the 1.8-litre hybrid with a CVT, and the Turkish-built saloon was dropped from the UK range after the facelift.

In most Western European countries the hatchback and Touring Sports came in base, mid-level, luxury and GR Sport forms. Base cars ran 16-inch alloy wheels, the mid-level 17-inch, and the luxury and GR Sport 18-inch, with a head-up display and Alcantara seats reserved for the luxury version.

The Suzuki Swace, a badge-engineered version of the estate, arrived in September 2020 and was sold only in Europe. Suzuki ended its production in 2025 as it shifted its focus toward electric vehicles.

How did Brazil and Southeast Asia sell the Corolla?

The saloon launched in Brazil in September 2019, built at the Indaiatuba plant in Sao Paulo state. The Altis carried a 1.8-litre Atkinson-cycle flex-fuel hybrid, while the GLi, XEi and Altis trims used a flex-fuel 2.0-litre M20A-FKB unit. Early in production only 5% of output was the Altis hybrid.

That share grew quickly. By February 2020 the Altis flex-fuel hybrid accounted for almost 25% of Corolla sales in Brazil. Toyota added a GR-S version in 2021, with the look of the Taiwanese Altis GR Sport and the 2.0-litre M20A-FKB engine.

Thailand was the first Southeast Asian country to launch the E210 as the Altis. Indonesia followed on 12 September 2019 with a fully imported car, and Vietnam launched on 9 March 2022, also imported from Thailand rather than built locally.

How did the facelift change the E210?

Facelifts arrived in different markets at different times. Japan's update came on 3 October 2022, the Australian car followed on 8 November 2022, and the North American changes went on sale for the 2023 model year. South Africa announced its update in November 2022.

In North America the base L was dropped for 2023, and US models gained automatic climate control, an 8-inch touchscreen and remote keyless entry. In Europe the screen grew to 10.5 inches, and non-hybrid engines were dropped entirely.

In Japan the 8NR-FTS and 2ZR-FAE gave way to the M15A-FKS for the saloon and Touring, while the hatchback moved to the M20A-FKS. The 2ZR-FXE hybrid was retained, with an updated electric motor.

How safe is the E210 Corolla?

The Australasian hatchback earned a five-star rating from ANCAP in 2018, aligned with Euro NCAP. In the United States the IIHS gave the hatchback a Top Safety Pick award on 2 October 2018, but not the Plus award, because its headlamps were rated poorly.

Latin NCAP gave the most basic Latin American Corolla five stars for adults and toddlers in 2019, plus its Advanced Award. In 2024 the organisation cut the score to four stars, after worse units began arriving from an additional plant in 2023.

Many UK police services put Corolla Touring estates into service from 2022, and by 2024 Corollas made up most new front-line response vehicles for urban forces.
