The short answer

Mygale is a French single-seater constructor founded on 31 January 1989 by Bertrand Decoster. Known first for Formula Ford, it supplied chassis for Formula Renault, USF2000, Formula BMW and Formula 4, and in 2025 it was fully consolidated into Ligier.

Mygale is a French single-seater constructor that began in 1989 at Magny-Cours and built its name in Formula Ford. Its chassis went on to win championships in Formula Renault, the Australian and American open-wheel series and a number of spec and national classes. Since 2025 the business has been part of Ligier, under the name Ligier Advanced Technologies.

When and why was Mygale founded?

Mygale SARL was founded on 31 January 1989 by Bertrand Decoster, a 24-year-old aerodynamics engineer. He set out to create a French Formula Ford chassis at a time when Van Diemen, Reynard Motorsports and Swift Cooper dominated the category, making a breakthrough difficult.

Decoster had trained at a French engineering school for aeronautical and automotive design before starting the company. The factory sits in the Technopole of Magny-Cours, which kept the business close to France's motor racing heartland from the start.

Breaking into the market meant creating a route to customers. The team opened its own racing school at the Autodrome de Linas-Montlhery near Paris, and its Formula Mygale centre followed in 1991. Students received lessons and time behind the wheel of Mygale's Formula Ford machine, which gave new drivers a direct link to the product.

From a Magny-Cours start-up to Formula Ford champions and now a Ligier company, Mygale built its name one chassis at a time.

Who has owned and run Mygale?

Bertrand Decoster founded Mygale in 1989. Ligier Automotive bought a majority stake in 2024, and in 2025 it turned the company into a subsidiary under the name Ligier Advanced Technologies, so the change brought the cars in production under the Ligier name.

The move happened in stages. The majority stake was obtained in December 2024, and on 10 April 2025 the parent confirmed that Mygale would be brought fully under its banner. Cars then in production were to be renamed as Ligiers, marking the end of the Mygale name on the chassis plates.

The first major project of the new business is the Ligier JS F326, a brand new Formula 3 car designed for the technical regulations of the 2026 Regional Formula 3 Championships worldwide. It is the clearest sign of where the combined group intends to take the engineering.

How did Formula Ford shape Mygale?

Formula Ford was Mygale's home ground and the category where it achieved its best results. Bertrand Godin gave the company an early success with two wins and second place in the French championship, and Mygale chassis went on to win titles in France, Britain and at the Formula Ford Festival.

The early seasons were a fight for recognition. In 1993 Godin was second in the French series after scoring two wins, and in 1994 he finished second again. That same year Soheil Ayari took the title in a Van Diemen, a sign that the established rivals were still strong.

The breakthrough came the following season. Running for Graff Racing, Patrice Gay claimed the French and European titles in a Mygale, and the French title returned to the chassis in 1996 when David Terrien won it. The European and national results gave the team credibility in its home market.

Britain followed. In 1997 two customer cars run by Haywood Racing joined the British series, and Ricardo Sperafico and Richard Tarling finished second and third in the championship. The same pair were also second and third at the Formula Ford Festival, which proved that the cars could compete at the top level.

The Festival brought more success. Jenson Button won the Festival title in 1998 and the British championship in a Mygale. Nicolas Kiesa took the 1999 British title and finished runner-up in Europe, and in 2000 the team scored a one-two finish at the Festival with Anthony Davidson and Danica Patrick.

After 2004 the grip on British Formula Ford tightened. Mygale won nine consecutive British championships, a run that made the brand synonymous with the class. When the series moved to the Ford EcoBoost engine in 2012, Mygale was the sole chassis supplier, and in 2013, when aerodynamic aids arrived, Fluid Motorsport joined with Sinter chassis. The season was still dominated by Mygale, and Radical Sportscars switched to Mygale after three rounds.

Which open-wheel series did Mygale supply?

Mygale's chassis appeared in a wide range of open-wheel categories, from national championships to single-make series. The sections below cover the most important ones, roughly in the order they arrived, and they show how a small French builder reached ladders on several continents.

Formula Renault from 1995

Mygale first entered Formula Renault in 1995 with a factory team, and it won the first title it contested. Cyrille Sauvage took the French Formula Renault Championship and the Eurocup, a result that gave the team an immediate reputation in the category.

In 1996 David Saelens finished second in the Eurocup and was on the podium four times. Alex Yoong drove alongside him, and Dufour finished fourth as the team's best placed driver in the series that year. Mygale then stayed out of the Eurocup for a season, as the series came under the control of Tatuus and Martini.

The team came back in 1998, when Julien Beltoise and Matthew Davies finished one-two in the French championship and Davies took second in the Eurocup. The open-chassis era ended with Mathieu Zangarelli winning six races for runner-up honours, while Tristan Gommendy and Simon Abadie finished fifth and sixth. The British series also gave Mygale its first success there, when Carl Breeze finished third for Haywood.

Australia and the national championship

Mygale made its Australian Formula Ford debut in 1996, and Dugal McDougall ended that year fifth. The first race win for the brand came in 1998 at Lakeside International Raceway, when McDougall took the victory. The first Australian title for a Mygale driver followed in 1999, when Greg Ritter beat his rivals narrowly in a close contest.

Luke Youlden won the championship in a Mygale in 2000. From 2001 to 2006 the brand was barely present, with a handful of entries. In 2007 Mygale returned in force when it supplied Sonic Motor Racing Services, and Tim Blanchard won the title with James Moffat second in the standings.

Mygale drivers took the title in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013. That final season closed the national series, and the Australian Formula Ford Series took its place.

USF2000 in America

In 1999 Mygale built a USF2000 car for the American market. Bobby Oergel and Ian Lacy raced for DSTP Motorsports, and Oergel scored three podium finishes that season. The early part of the year was the strongest for the team, and Oergel finished sixth in the championship while Lacy was 17th.

The 2002 season was the most productive for Mygale in USF2000. Jonathan Urlin, running for OTM Motorsports, claimed two poles and four podiums, and he finished third in the championship behind Bryan Sellers and Jeffrey Jones.

Formula 3 and the national series

Mygale introduced its M-06 Formula 3 machine in 2006, and its successor, the M-07, was used at the 2007 Masters of Formula 3. The Italian series brought a strong result in 2009 when Pablo Sanchez Lopez won four races and finished third. The following year most teams switched back to the Van Diemen, leaving Mygale without a win.

The height of the F3 story came in 2012, when Riccardo Agostini drove the only Mygale in the field and won the Italian championship with five race wins. As European interest in the category faded, the company turned its attention to Australia, where Mygales were raced from 2012. Nick Foster took two wins and finished third overall in Australia's 2013 F3 campaign.

F1600 and Formula 4

In the American F1600 Championship Series the Mygales used Honda L15A7 engines, and Bryan Herta Autosport took on the importer role for Mygale North America. Brandon Newey won four races and finished second in the 2012 championship, and the team repeated its success in 2013 with Adrian Starrantino.

The M14-F4 debuted in 2014 to FIA Formula 4 regulations and went on to serve national series in France, Britain, China, Denmark, Argentina and several other countries. The M21-F4, introduced in 2021, followed the second generation of the FIA Formula 4 rules.

Single-make series and sports cars

Not all of Mygale's work was in open-wheel racing. In 2000 it built cars for the Portuguese Formula Novis, and in 2001 BMW contracted Mygale to build the cars for its spec Formula BMW series. That chassis was used between 2001 and 2012, and 38 Formula BMW champions were crowned across the world in that period.

The Spider THP reworked the Peugeot 207 into an open sportscar, built in 2007 for the Peugeot Sport THP Spider Cup. It used a Peugeot engine, and later national variants appeared in France and Denmark. The Danish championship lasted to 2011, while the European series ran to 2012.

These milestones show a company that depended on customer teams. Many more titles were won in cars sold to independent operators, and the table reflects only the most prominent of them.

What is Mygale's legacy?

Mygale's legacy is a long run of customer success in Formula Ford, Formula Renault, Formula 3 and Formula 4. Its chassis were raced by champions across Europe, Australia and America, and its spec cars for BMW helped launch the careers of many drivers.

The company's core idea was to offer a competitive chassis to drivers and teams who could not afford a factory effort. Much of its success came from supplying customers, which kept its cars in a wide range of championships around the world.

Ligier's involvement has changed the scale of the business. The JS F326 for the 2026 Regional Formula 3 Championships is the first large project under the new name, and it shows how the Mygale heritage is being carried into a new era of the company.
