The short answer

Honda's eleventh-generation Civic, known by the FE and FL chassis codes, succeeded the tenth-generation car in 2021. Its body styles and engines vary by market, and the range spans petrol turbos, a hybrid, the Si sedan and the Type R.

Honda's eleventh-generation Civic is a C-segment car that replaced the tenth generation in one step, and it is the first Civic since the second generation to go without a two-door version. Sedans, liftbacks, hybrids and performance models all share one family, though each region receives a different slice of the range.

The car reached markets in stages, starting in North America in June 2021 and arriving in Europe and Pakistan in 2022. A facelift followed for the 2025 model year, and the Mitsuoka M55 later used the liftback body as the basis for a styling-led special.

What is the eleventh-generation Civic?

The eleventh-generation Honda Civic, with chassis codes FE and FL, is a compact car that Honda began building in 2021 to replace the tenth-generation model. Body styles vary by market, and the car arrived in North America in June 2021.

Tomoyuki Yamagami served as large project leader for the car, and Honda described the design approach as Man-Maximum, Machine-Minimum.

The rollout then spread outward. Southeast Asia came in August 2021, with Japan and China next in September and Oceania in December. Pakistan received a locally assembled sedan in March 2022, and Europe followed in late 2022.

One compact, many markets: a hatchback-led Civic with a hybrid option, a 330 PS Type R and staggered launches worldwide.

Why did the two-door Civic disappear?

This generation is the first to omit two-door bodies since the second Civic generation, so neither a three-door hatchback nor a two-door coupe is offered. Honda dropped those bodies because of declining sales. The Si performance model is likewise sold only as a sedan, because the coupe body was discontinued.

Sedans and liftbacks are the two body styles in use across the markets. In Oceania only the liftback is offered, because sedan sales declined and most small car buyers prefer a hatchback.

How did Honda change the body and structure?

Honda moved the base of the windshield pillars 1.96 in (50 mm) further back, lengthening the hood for styling reasons. Torsional rigidity rose by 8 percent and bending rigidity by 13 percent, supporting better ride, handling and noise control. Honda cites both figures against the previous generation.

The low beltline and door-mounted side mirrors came from the eighth and ninth generations, where they helped visibility. The wheelbase grew by 1.4 in (36 mm), and the suspension was tuned to take advantage of the stiffer body and that extra length.

How does the hatchback differ from the sedan?

The Civic Hatchback uses a fastback, coupe-inspired profile with a rear overhang shortened by 124 mm (4.9 in) compared with the sedan, while keeping the same wheelbase and rear doors. It is built in Japan at Yorii and in the United States at Greensburg, Indiana.

The Greensburg plant produced the first Civic Hatchback built in the US. Other Civic body styles have been produced in America since 1986.

In Oceania the liftback is the only body on offer, and the Mitsuoka M55 is also built on it.

What engines does the Civic offer?

In North America the base engine is a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol rated at 158 hp, while the EX and Touring use a 1.5-litre turbo rated at 180 hp. Japan uses a 1.5-litre turbo L15C with a six-speed manual or CVT, and Canada offers the turbo only on the Touring trim.

In Canada every sedan and liftback comes standard with a CVT, and the liftback can be ordered with a six-speed manual on the Sport and Touring trims.

In North America the 2024 hybrid powertrain replaced the 180 hp turbocharged L15 and also took the place of the K20C2 engine.

What is the Civic e:HEV hybrid?

The e:HEV is the hybrid version of the eleventh-generation Civic, revealed on 23 March 2022 in sedan and liftback form. It combines a new 2.0-litre Atkinson cycle petrol unit with two electric motors and a lithium-ion battery, and Honda claims 41 percent thermal efficiency for the system.

The battery pack weighs 36 kg, is rated at 1 kWh and uses 72 cells.

Honda's combined carbon dioxide rating for the hybrid is 108 g/km, or 6.1 oz/mi. The e:HEV took over from the Insight as part of a wider move to concentrate on hybrid versions of Honda's CR-V, Accord and Civic.

What is the Civic Type R?

The Civic Type R is the performance derivative of the eleventh-generation Civic Hatchback, introduced as the sixth-generation Type R on 20 July 2022. It keeps the 2.0-litre K20C1 engine from the previous generation and delivers 330 PS (243 kW; 325 hp).

Like its predecessor, the car carries widened fenders, but the FL5 has wider rear doors and quarters instead of a plastic add-on.

The engine changes were incremental, with a revised turbocharger as the main example.

What is the Civic Si?

The Civic Si is a North American-only performance sedan, introduced in October 2021 as a 2022 model. It uses a tuned 1.5-litre direct-injection turbo and delivers 200 hp (149 kW), with torque of 192 lb ft (260 N m) and a six-speed manual as the only gearbox.

The Si engine uses variable timing on both its intake and exhaust valves, plus variable lift on the exhaust side. Peak power arrives at 6,000 rpm, and maximum torque is available from 1,800 to 5,000 rpm.

The Si remains exclusive to North America, where it is sold only as a sedan.

What changed in the 2024 facelift?

Honda unveiled the update on 21 May 2024, ahead of the 2025 model year, and it reached showrooms on 12 June 2024. The update brought a new grille, body-coloured trim, smoked taillights, new alloy wheel designs, a grey interior colour and Google built-in infotainment.

In Australia the facelift replaced the VTi LX with the e:HEV L as the entry grade, which made the Civic hybrid-only there.

The European facelift arrived in August 2025 and remained petrol-hybrid only. It drops the front foglights because of improved technology in the LED headlights.

Where did the Civic launch first?

North America led in June 2021. Southeast Asia came next in August, then Japan and China in September, with Australia and New Zealand following in December. Pakistan joined in March 2022 and Europe in late 2022, with the Middle East following on 5 March 2022.

The Middle East launch used a single Sport trim with Honda Sensing as standard, driven by a 1.5-litre turbo petrol unit.

In the United States the car arrived as the 2022 model year with LX, Sport, EX and Touring trims. The LX was removed for 2023, then returned because demand held up, and the Civic Hybrid followed in late 2024, badged for the 2025 model year.

How did the Civic reach Europe?

Europe received the eleventh-generation Civic in August 2022, sourced from Japan, after Honda's UK Swindon plant closed. Only the liftback is offered there, and the regular Civic range uses a petrol hybrid powertrain alone.

Turkey is the exception, because its sedan has a 1.5-litre turbo, brought in from Thailand since Honda's Gebze factory shut.

The facelifted Civic reached Europe in August 2025 with the same petrol-hybrid-only approach.

How did the Civic perform in Southeast Asia?

Southeast Asia received the Civic as a sedan only, because hatchbacks sold slowly across the ASEAN market. In Thailand the sedan outsold the hatchback nine to one during 2020, and Malaysia and Pakistan both assembled cars locally.

Thailand launched in August 2021 with EL, EL+ and RS trims, all using a 1.5-litre turbo. The e:HEV sedan went on sale in August 2022, and the 2024 facelift added hybrid grades alongside a turbo EL+ car.

In February 2026 the entry grade became an e:HEV EL in place of the Turbo EL+, which left Thailand hybrid-only. Later that year, in July 2026, the e:HEV RS picked up S+ Shift.

The Indonesian launch came on 28 October 2021, with the City Sedan, which was brought in from Thailand. Only the RS trim was offered. The facelift in May 2025 kept just one variant, the RS e:HEV,.

The Philippines launched on 23 November 2021 in S, V and RS trims, and Singapore followed on 12 August 2021 with one variant. Singapore's car is detuned to qualify for the Category A COE, which limits engine displacement and output.

What happened in Latin America and South Africa?

Brazil received the Civic on 5 June 2023 from Thailand with a single 2.0-litre e:HEV hybrid variant, and Argentina followed in late 2024 with an Advanced Hybrid. Chile and Peru launched petrol versions, while Mexico offered petrol and hybrid trims.

Mexico launched the sedan from Canada on 6 August 2021 in three trims: i-Style, Sport and Touring. Its facelift in late 2024 added hybrid versions of the Sport and Touring trims, while the i-Style kept the 2.0-litre K20C2 petrol engine.

South Africa launched in August 2022 with a single RS trim and a 1.5-litre turbo. Honda discontinued the Civic there in August 2026, and the reason given was a market that continues to favour SUVs.

What is the Mitsuoka M55?

The Mitsuoka M55 is a styling-led car built on the eleventh-generation Civic liftback, first shown as a concept in 2023 for Mitsuoka's 55th anniversary. The production version is almost identical to that concept and was offered in limited editions from 2025.

Its styling takes cues from the C130 Kenmeri Nissan Skyline, combined with the front fascia of the Dodge Challenger. The car measures 4,735 mm (186.4 in) in length, which is 175 mm (6.9 in) longer than the Civic liftback it is based on.

The first limited run was the Zero Edition, which sold out quickly in early 2025. A second version was due to go on sale in 2026, and a separate First Edition of 100 units was released in 2025.
