The Audi Q3 is a subcompact luxury crossover SUV that Audi has produced since 2011, with a transverse front engine. How did the Audi Q3 begin?
The Q3 started life as a concept called the Audi Cross Coupe quattro, which was designed by Julian Hoenig in 2006. It was unveiled at the Shanghai show in April 2007. The concept had a 2.0 TDI engine rated at 204 PS (150 kW; 201 hp), a Haldex quattro system and a dual-clutch gearbox.
Design and development of the production car began after board approval in the second half of 2007. Hoenig's design was chosen for production and frozen in 2009. The car was unveiled at Auto Shanghai in 2011 and went on sale in June 2011.
The Q3 sits above the Q2 subcompact crossover in Audi's range. Compared with the larger Q5 and Q7, which are built for family practicality and off-road performance, the Q3 is aimed more at lifestyle buyers who want a sporting feel.

What platform and parts did the Q3 use?
The Q3 used the Volkswagen Group PQ46 platform, the same platform as the Passat B6 and the Tiguan compact SUV. It also shared components, transmissions and engines with other vehicles built on the PQ35 platform, including the Volkswagen Golf, the Audi A3 and the Skoda Yeti.
Production started at the SEAT factory in Martorell, Spain, with annual output of about 100,000 Q3 units. Audi announced the start of production on 7 June 2011, and the first car came off the line on 13 July 2011 with Prince Felipe at the inauguration.
A Chinese plant at Changchun, built with partner FAW, began making Q3s in 2013. The Changchun car entered the Chinese market in April 2013, with 35 TFSI, 35 TFSI quattro and 40 TFSI quattro models and 7-speed S tronic transmissions.
Which engines did the first-generation Q3 offer?
The first cars offered a 2.0 TFSI quattro, a 2.0 TDI and a 2.0 TDI quattro.
India received the 2.0 TDI quattro in 2012. China received imported Q3s from late July 2012 before the Changchun car arrived. In Germany a 2.0 TDI quattro rated 103 kW (138 hp) was introduced in 2012 as part of the Paris Motor Show premiere,; the UK also received a version of the 2.0 TDI quattro.
What were the Q3 concept cars?
The Q3 Vail was a 2012 concept shown at the North American International Auto Show. It used a 2.5 TFSI rated at 314 PS and was named after the Colorado town of Vail, which has a sponsorship arrangement with Audi.
The RS Q3 concept was shown at Auto China 2012 in Beijing with a blue body and a 360 PS version of the 2.5 TFSI. The Q3 Jinlong Yufeng concept, also shown in Beijing, carried a 310 PS engine and a bespoke yellow interior, and the Q3 red track concept appeared at the 2012 Worthersee Tour.
How did the RS Q3 perform?
The RS Q3 was the first production turbo model in the Q series. It used a 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder turbo rated 310 PS (228 kW; 306 hp) at 5200 to 6700 rpm, with 420 N-m of torque at 1500 to 5200 rpm and a 7-speed S tronic gearbox.
The RS Q3 accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds and was limited to 250 km/h. It was unveiled at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show and delivered first in Germany in late 2013, with UK deliveries starting in early 2014. The car was not offered in Canada.
A later RS Q3 performance version of 2016 increased output to 367 PS (270 kW; 362 hp) with 465 N-m of torque. It came with a titanium-look finish, 20-inch wheels and red brake calipers bearing the RS logo.
What changed in the first-generation facelift?
Changes for 2015 began at the front end. The grille on the 2015 version had a wider chrome surround that touched the headlights at each side, and the lower air vents were enlarged. The re-profiled LED headlights gave the car a more recognisable look in the dark.
The 2015 update also brought alloy-optic interior controls, front and rear parking sensors with a rearview camera, and full LED headlights on the Prestige models. Early models included a 2.0 TDI clean diesel and a 1.4 TFSI COD engine, while the RS Q3 kept its 250 kW output.
Was the Q3 affected by the emissions scandal?
In late September 2015 it was found that the Volkswagen Group had fitted a defeat device to cheat emissions tests. The Audi Q3 was also listed as fitted with one such device, which made the model part of the wider scandal affecting the group.
What was the second-generation Q3?
The second-generation Audi Q3, Typ F3, was officially unveiled on 25 July 2018. It was built on the MQB A2 platform and was tested on the Nurburgring in a sports version that would become the SQ3, with an even more powerful RS Q3 planned.
A Sportback version was revealed in July 2019. It was marginally lower, narrower and longer than the standard car, with different bumpers, side skirts and body cladding. The lower roofline and raked rear hatch reduced headroom, and cargo volume was 0.14 cubic metres less with the rear seats folded.
The Sportback was aimed at the BMW X2 and went on sale as a distinct body style. The RS Q3 was revealed in September 2019 with the same engine as the first-generation RS Q3, but with more power, and a plug-in hybrid with a 1.4-litre turbo four arrived in January 2021 in Germany.
How has the Q3 performed in safety testing?
Euro NCAP tested the Q3 as a compact SUV, and the car came with front airbags, side airbags, seatbelt pretensioners and load limiters as standard. Those features gave the model a baseline of passive protection from its first year.
The Q3 Sportback has been sold since 2019 and carries the same safety equipment as the standard car. Its coupe-style body changed the shape of the rear, but the core safety package was unchanged.
What special editions were made?
The RS Q3 Edition 10 Years was announced in October 2022 as a special edition with blacked-out trim. Only 555 units were built, which made it one of the rarest versions of the Q3 family.
The RS Q3 Sportback and the standard Sportback shared the same coupe-style profile, and the special edition gave buyers a visual way to mark the car's anniversary.
What is the third-generation Audi Q3?
The third-generation Q3, Typ FJ, was unveiled on 16 June 2025. It takes design inspiration from the third-generation Q5. Sales in Germany were set to begin in late 2025, and the coupe-style Q3 Sportback followed with its unveiling on 25 August 2025.
The gear selector sits on the steering column rather than the centre console. The car also has a 12-speaker audio system, ambient door lighting, a 12-inch screen and an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster, plus a 15W phone charger.
Four powertrains were confirmed at launch: 1.5 and 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinders, a 2.0-litre diesel and a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol plug-in hybrid. The same units also appear in the Tiguan, which uses them too.
At launch the plug-in and diesel cars had no all-wheel drive option, which came only with the 2.0-litre petrol.
