Early racing in late models and the CARS tour
The 2019 IceBreaker 125 Late Model race at Myrtle Beach Speedway went to Gibbs, who drove the No. 18 for Nelson Motorsports.
He raced in the CARS Late Model Stock series for Marlowe Racing in 2017 and 2018. In 2017 he competed in only eight of thirteen races and finished fourteenth in points, and a year later he was eighth. Across that period he had two poles, led 90 laps and recorded an average finish of 13.3.
His best CARS result was second at Anderson Motor Speedway, a finish that marked him as a driver worth watching.
How did the ARCA Menards career develop?
In 2019 Gibbs ran a partial ARCA Menards Series East schedule for DGR-Crosley and collected four second-place finishes in five starts. His first career win came in his sixth start, at New Hampshire on 21 September. He then ran the full East series for Joe Gibbs Racing in 2020.
In 2020 he won at Toledo Speedway in June and finished runner-up to Sam Mayer, who won every other race that year. He also led 104 laps at Dover before a late crash, his only retirement in that series.
In 2021 he made four starts in the East series, winning the pole and the race in every one and leading 621 of the 625 laps he completed.
What did the 2021 ARCA title require?
Gibbs won the 2021 ARCA Menards Series championship with ten wins from twenty races. He had opened the season with a fourth at Daytona and a win at Phoenix, and in May he led every lap to win at Kansas. It was the first time since 2012 that a driver had led all the laps of an ARCA race.
He also won at Charlotte two races later and at the Milwaukee Mile in August. His season-long battle with Corey Heim was the defining feature of the title fight, and he finished in the top five in every race except Talladega, where a crash with Greg Van Alst sent him to 27th.
How did his Xfinity debut go?
Gibbs made his Xfinity Series debut in 2021 at the Daytona Road Course, running a part-time schedule in the No. 54 car. He beat Austin Cindric in overtime, and the win made him the sixth driver to triumph on Xfinity debut.
He was the first to do so without prior Cup Series experience, and at 18 years old he became the youngest winner of an Xfinity road course race. That record stood until Connor Zilisch won the 2024 race at The Glen.
His 2021 Xfinity season covered 18 of the 33 races. He finished thirteenth in the standings and won Rookie of the Year honours, and he won again at Charlotte in May before a Watkins Glen win where he led the most laps.

For 2022 Gibbs moved into the series full-time in the No. 54 car. He won early at Las Vegas, Atlanta and Richmond, then added wins at Road America and Michigan, which kept him near the top of the title race.
The season had a notable clash at Martinsville in April. After the race he ran into Sam Mayer's car during the cool-down lap, and the two drivers fought on pit road. Gibbs was fined US$15,000 for the contact.
At the Martinsville playoff race he made contact with teammate Brandon Jones on the final overtime lap and still won. He had already clinched a place in the Championship Four, and he dominated at Phoenix to take the 2022 Xfinity title.
How did his Cup debut come about?
Gibbs made his Cup debut in July 2022, filling in for Kurt Busch at 23XI Racing at Pocono. Busch had not been cleared to race after concussion-like symptoms, and Gibbs finished 16th. Three days later he finished 17th at Indianapolis in the same role.
At Michigan he scored his first top ten, finishing 10th. He filled in for the rest of the regular season, and later swapped rides with Bubba Wallace for the Darlington race. He missed the 2022 finale after the death of his father, Coy Gibbs, and Daniel Hemric replaced him.
What did the full-time Cup years bring?
Gibbs moved into the Cup Series full-time in 2023, in the rebranded No. 54 for Joe Gibbs Racing. He missed the playoffs that year, but he scored four top fives and took the NASCAR Rookie of the Year title. His 2024 season was stronger.
In 2024 he won his first career pole at Charlotte and his second at Pocono. He made the playoffs without a regular-season win, and he was eliminated after the Round of 16. He finished fifteenth in the points, a career best.
In 2025 the team restructured. Tyler Allen became his crew chief, and Chris Gayle moved to Denny Hamlin's No. 11 team. Gibbs also won the inaugural NASCAR In-Season Challenge over Ty Dillon.
How did Gibbs earn his first Cup win?
Gibbs picked up his first Cup win at Bristol in 2026, in his 131st career start. He became the sixth driver to win his first race at Bristol Motor Speedway, and the victory ended a long wait for a first Cup win.
