Oscar Piastri has lost seventh place in the Mexico City Grand Prix after the stewards found him responsible for a collision with Arvid Lindblad of Racing Bulls and added 10 seconds to his race time. The penalty drops the McLaren driver to 15th in the classification and leaves him without points.
Gabriel Bortoleto of Audi is promoted into the points as a result.
What happened on track
Piastri had started 12th on the grid after a surprise exit in Q2 at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. He moved into the top 10 early in the race and then up to seventh through the pit stops.
On the Safety Car restart, Lindblad passed Piastri and moved him down to eighth. Piastri tried to reverse the position by going around the outside at Turn 1. Through the corner his front tyre hit Lindblad's left rear, and the Racing Bulls car slid into the barriers.
The stewards' decision
The stewards took evidence from both drivers and team representatives, and looked at positioning and marshalling data along with video and in-car footage.
They said Piastri was never fully alongside Lindblad on the approach to Turn 1, so he could not claim the right to the corner. They said Lindblad defended by releasing the brakes through the turn but did not force Piastri off the track, and that he was not required to give racing room on the outside.
In their view Piastri could have avoided contact by steering further left once through Turn 1, even if that took him off the track before Turn 2.
What it means for Piastri
Piastri leaves Mexico City with zero points. This is the fourth round this year in which he has failed to score, following Australia, Hungary and Azerbaijan.
