The short answer

Joey Logano's contact with Christopher Bell on Lap 215 at Martinsville spun Bell and teammate Denny Hamlin, NASCAR said. Both continued, Hamlin finishing sixth and Bell 10th.

Contact from Joey Logano on Lap 215 of Stage 2 at Martinsville Speedway spun Christopher Bell and his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin, according to NASCAR. The contact came as Bell entered Turn 1.

NASCAR said Hamlin was on the outside of the No. 20 while Logano tried to pass on the inside of Bell, and the three cars ran out of room. Both Hamlin and Bell continued and rallied to score top-10 finishes in Sunday's Cup Series race.

How the race ended for them

  • Hamlin finished sixth. He had entered the Chase race second in points but found himself outside the top 10 after staying out through all of Stage 1 on a strategy gamble. His team did not score stage points.
  • Bell rounded out the top 10. He placed fourth in Stage 1, then was penalised for speeding on pit road during the caution that followed Carson Hocevar's spin in Turn 4 on Lap 199. He remained on the lead lap but had to restart last.
  • Points leader Kyle Larson ran the same Stage 1 strategy as Hamlin and fell a lap down, but took the free pass when the Bell and Hamlin caution came out. He ended the day ninth at the 0.526-mile Virginia track.

Championship picture

Bell moved ahead of Hamlin for second in the standings and trails Larson by 67 points. Hamlin enters the season finale 70 points behind Larson, the two-time and defending Cup champion.

The finale is at Homestead-Miami Speedway next Sunday, with a 3 p.m. ET start, NASCAR said.
