The short answer

Leclerc claimed the 2026 British Grand Prix at Silverstone on 5 July, his first win at the circuit. Russell was runner-up and Hamilton third, and a safety car at the finish meant there was no final restart.

Charles Leclerc won the 2026 British Grand Prix after a race that finished behind the safety car under yellow flags. It was his ninth Formula One win and his first at Silverstone, and it came as Kimi Antonelli fell from a likely victory to fifteenth after a wheel shield failure and a penalty. The weekend also set a new attendance record for a Formula One event.

What was the background to the British Grand Prix?

Silverstone hosted Formula One for the 61st time, and the race was the 77th British Grand Prix to count towards the world championship. It was the ninth round of the 2026 season and the fourth of six sprint weekends, with the event attracting 564,000 spectators across the weekend.

Antonelli led the drivers' championship with 171 points, 40 ahead of Russell in second and 46 ahead of Hamilton in third. Mercedes led the constructors with 302 points, ahead of Ferrari on 204 and McLaren on 159.

Pirelli brought its three hardest compounds, designated hard, medium and soft respectively. The only free practice session was held on 3 July at 12:30 local time (UTC+1), and it was topped by Hamilton, ahead of Antonelli and Leclerc.

A late safety car, a broken wheel shield and a record crowd made Silverstone one of the strangest Grands Prix of the 2026 season.

How did sprint qualifying set the sprint grid?

Hamilton took sprint pole with a time of 1:28.376, which beat Antonelli by 0.011 seconds. It was his third pole in the sprint format. Verstappen qualified third and Leclerc fourth, while Russell fell back to fifth after struggling for pace throughout the final segment. Piastri and Norris sat sixth and seventh, with Hadjar, Lawson and Lindblad behind them.

In the first segment Hadjar briefly led before Hamilton returned to the top late in the session, with Leclerc second. Sainz secured the last place in the second segment by 0.010 seconds from Bearman, while Perez, Bottas, Alonso and Stroll were eliminated. Norris had damaged his car on a kerb in that segment, and McLaren repaired it during the interval before the final part.

Hamilton's advantage over Leclerc in practice had already stood out before sprint qualifying, even though Ferrari had gone into the weekend worried about its straight-line speed. That gap became clearer once the sprint qualifying segments began.

The final segment was a one-lap shootout run on soft tyres. Piastri set a representative lap first, and Norris improved on it before Antonelli moved to provisional pole. Hamilton responded with the decisive lap and then the stewards issued warnings to Albon and Lindblad for separate breaches of the race director's instructions.

What happened in the sprint?

Antonelli won the sprint from Hamilton, a result that made him the youngest sprint winner in Formula One history. His win also extended his championship lead over Russell to 43 points, and it was the first sprint victory of his career.

Hamilton led early, but Antonelli closed rapidly and the contest turned into a battle of energy management. Hamilton used his battery deployment to repel a first attack, but Antonelli kept within range and passed him on the Hangar Straight into Stowe on lap eight. Antonelli then extended his advantage, and Hamilton could not mount a sustained answer.

Norris finished third, completing the podium, while Russell briefly passed him before being held off. Leclerc passed Piastri for sixth and then Verstappen for fifth, and Lawson held off Hadjar for the final point in eighth. Alonso was spun around on the opening lap after contact with Perez, who was given a ten-second penalty and finished last.

How did qualifying decide the Grand Prix grid?

Antonelli took pole for the Grand Prix, his fifth of the season, which extended Mercedes' streak of taking pole at all nine Grands Prix held in 2026. Leclerc was second, Hamilton third and Russell fourth on the grid.

In the first segment, Russell ran wide through the gravel at Luffield and damaged his front wing, but he recovered to progress. Hadjar set the fastest first-segment time, ahead of Verstappen, while Colapinto went off at Becketts and brought out yellow flags. Ocon, Bottas, Perez, Stroll and Alonso were the first to be eliminated.

In the second segment Antonelli's first attempt was deleted for exceeding track limits, but he came back on his next run and went fastest. Norris finished ninth and Piastri seventh after a difficult session, and Bortoleto was eliminated in eleventh place.

The final segment began with Piastri among the first to set a lap, while Lindblad waited in the garage to save his tyres. Antonelli briefly held provisional pole and questioned the strategy over the radio before improving in the middle and final sectors. Mercedes had used an unusual but legal power unit deployment technique that McLaren did not yet have access to.

Gasly was given a three-place penalty for impeding Stroll in the first segment, and Stroll was given a ten-place penalty for exceeding his power unit quota. Both changes reshaped the rows behind the front of the grid.

What happened during the Grand Prix?

Leclerc made the better start and took the lead, while Hamilton passed Antonelli to give Ferrari the top two positions. Antonelli then passed Hamilton and pressed Leclerc, but a broken wheel shield changed the race and left him needing two more pit stops.

Hamilton was given a five-second penalty for a possible false start, which he served at his first stop. Russell was later told of a slow right-rear puncture and pitted on lap 35. Antonelli had also taken a kerb aggressively at Copse, and the damage to his left-front wheel shield forced him to stop again to remove the broken bodywork.

When Hulkenberg stopped on track with a hydraulic problem on lap 39, a second virtual safety car was deployed. Verstappen, Norris and Hadjar took their final stops during it. Antonelli had made his second stop by then and returned in tenth, struggling with the handling of the car, and he later picked up a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits.

Verstappen lost the rear of his car at Stowe on lap 48 and became stranded in the gravel, which brought out the safety car. Leclerc and Hamilton pitted for fresh soft tyres, while Russell stayed out on used mediums and moved ahead into second place. Race control began a planned final-lap restart procedure, but the restart was cancelled after a software error.

Because lapped cars had already been permitted to pass the safety car, the regulations meant it could not return to the pits in time for a restart before the flag. The field remained behind the safety car to the finish, and Leclerc took the chequered flag ahead of Russell and Hamilton.

Not every incident involved the leaders. Alonso started from the pit lane after an issue on his car during the formation lap. Piastri damaged his front wing in contact with Lawson at Brooklands on the opening lap, pitted at the end of that lap, and spent the rest of the race outside the points. Albon touched Bearman at turn six, which earned him a ten-second penalty, and Williams kept him circulating to gather data before he retired.

The points finishers reflect how much the late safety car compressed the order. Leclerc led from the front, Russell and Hamilton completed the podium, and Mercedes and Ferrari filled the top three. Racing Bulls and Alpine shared the points between them behind the front runners. Bortoleto's eighth place tripled Audi's points total for the season up to that point, while Colapinto recovered from a half-spin at Club on the opening lap to finish ninth. Gasly completed the points after a slow first pit stop.

Which penalties and investigations affected the result?

Hamilton kept third after the stewards reviewed his conduct at turn nine. They judged that he had not slowed enough for one yellow flag on lap 38, but issued only a reprimand, his first of the season. The stewards accepted that he had entered the sector before the flag was shown and was anticipating a counter-attack from Verstappen.

Sainz was given a one-lap penalty for unlapping himself during the late safety car. He had been a lap down before entering the pit lane, but the timing line meant that he was briefly unlapped, which made him ineligible to overtake the safety car. The penalty dropped him from twelfth to seventeenth.

Antonelli's five-second track limits penalty took him from ninth on track to fifteenth in the classification, meaning his result was worse than his pace would have suggested. He had been on course for a strong finish after his broken wheel shield was repaired, but the penalty and the wheel damage combined to cost him a chance at the podium.

What did the result mean for the championship?

Antonelli kept the lead on 179 points, but Russell reduced the gap to 25 points by moving to 154. Hamilton stayed third on 147 points, ahead of Leclerc on 108 and Norris on 97. The shift left the title race closer than the start of the weekend had suggested. Russell had been 40 points behind Antonelli before the race, and the gap had closed to 25 points by the flag.

Leclerc's victory was also significant for Ferrari, which recorded its 250th Formula One World Championship race win. It was his first victory since the 2024 United States Grand Prix, and the first time he had won at Silverstone.

Frequently asked questions

How many laps did the British Grand Prix run?
The race covered 52 laps and started at 15:00 local time (UTC+1) on 5 July. Pirelli had expected most of the field to try a one-stop strategy. All 22 drivers began on mediums, and one driver, Alonso, joined the race from the pit lane after a problem during the formation lap.
Why did the race end behind the safety car?
Verstappen stopped in the gravel at Stowe, which brought out the safety car. A software fault then ruled out the restart that was being prepared, so the cars finished behind the car on the track.
Who won the sprint held on 4 July?
The 17-lap sprint went to Antonelli, with Hamilton second and Norris third.
How many people attended the British Grand Prix weekend?
The weekend drew 564,000 spectators, which was a record for the best-attended Formula One event. The total came from the whole weekend, not the race alone.
