A European subcompact, a compact born in China and a three-row American mid-size: where each crossover sits and which markets get which.

The short answer

The T-Roc is Volkswagen's subcompact crossover, launched in 2017, the Taos is a compact that began as China's Tharu in 2018, and the Atlas is a mid-size three-row model sold since 2017. All three sit on MQB platforms but aim at different markets.

The Volkswagen Taos that American buyers find at a dealer started life in China as the Tharu, and it counts as the first VW product developed in China to be sold elsewhere. That detail explains a good deal about how the T-Roc, Taos and Atlas fit together: three crossovers built on the same family of platforms, aimed at different markets and slotted into different rungs of the SUV ladder.

The T-Roc is the subcompact European crossover, the Taos a global compact with no European sales, and the Atlas a big three-row model made mainly in Tennessee and China. Each has its own sub-models, from a convertible to a coupe-roof Cross Sport, and the names change from country to country.

Where do the T-Roc, Taos and Atlas sit in the Volkswagen SUV range?

The T-Roc is a subcompact crossover between the Tiguan and the smaller T-Cross, the Taos a compact crossover between the T-Cross and the Tiguan in South America and China, and the Atlas a mid-size crossover above the Tayron. All three are built on the MQB family of platforms.

The T-Roc uses the MQB A1 platform and is generally considered the SUV equivalent of the Golf. It is about the same size as the cheaper Taigo and is closely related to the Golf Mk7, the SEAT Leon Mk3, the Audi A3 Mk3 and the Skoda Octavia Mk3. The Taos shares the same A1 platform, with sheet metal shared with the SEAT Ateca, the Skoda Karoq and the Jetta VS5, and the Atlas is based on the MQB platform. Until the China-only Viloran appeared, the Atlas was the largest vehicle on the MQB platform.

In North America the Taos sits directly below the Tiguan, which is sold only in a long-wheelbase form there, and stands in indirectly for the dropped Golf. The Atlas is aimed chiefly at American, Chinese and Middle Eastern buyers. It sits above the Tayron (the model North America calls the Tiguan), and in China it ranks beneath the Tavendor and Talagon.

What is the VW T-Roc and how have its generations changed?

A concept of the same name appeared in Geneva in 2014, the production car debuted in Frankfurt in 2017, and it reached showrooms that November. The second generation moved to the MQB Evo platform shared with the Golf Mk8.5 and was officially presented on 27 August 2025.

The European production car had its launch in Italy on 23 August 2017, the fourth SUV in VW's European range. It has MacPherson strut front suspension and either a torsion beam or a multi-link rear, with optional adaptive dampers. European cars are built at the Autoeuropa plant in Palmela, Portugal, and Chinese cars at the FAW-Volkswagen plant in Foshan. India saw the T-Roc at the 2020 Auto Expo and received it as a limited imported model in March 2020.

The Chinese T-Roc, unveiled on 23 March 2018 and on sale from 30 July 2018, is bigger than the European one, with a wheelbase 90 mm longer, a length 84 mm greater and a height 9 mm taller. It uses 1.2 and 1.4-litre TSI engines with 115, 130 or 150 PS. A facelift was unveiled in November 2021, and the Chinese car had another in April 2023 with a 1.4-litre TSI making 150 PS or a 1.5-litre turbo with 160 PS.

European engines range from a 1.0-litre TSI with 115 PS and a 1.5-litre TSI Evo with 150 PS and cylinder deactivation to a 2.0-litre TSI with 190 PS. Diesels are a 1.6 TDI with 115 PS and a 2.0 TDI with 150 PS. Most come with a six-speed manual, while the 2.0-litre TSI uses a seven-speed DSG and standard 4Motion four-wheel drive.

T-Roc R and the T-Roc Cabriolet

The T-Roc R launched in February 2019 with the EA888 2.0-litre turbo from the Golf R, making 300 PS (221 kW; 296 hp) and 400 Nm. It came with 4Motion all-wheel drive, sat 20 mm lower than the standard car and wore Akrapovic quad exhausts.

The T-Roc Cabriolet reached Germany in April 2020, the first VW convertible for two years. Everything behind the front wheel arches is new, the wheelbase is longer, and the rear doors and B-pillar were removed for the folding fabric roof, so the chassis gained new crossbeams and a reinforced A-pillar. The roof mechanism, shared with the discontinued Golf Cabriolet, opens in nine seconds and closes in 11 at speeds up to 30 km/h (19 mph), and the canvas comes only in black.

Only two seats fit in the back, and the boot shrinks to 284 litres, 161 litres less than the standard car. Engines are a 1.0-litre three-cylinder with 115 PS and a 1.5-litre four with 150 PS, in Design and R-Line trims, and Osnabruck, a specialist in convertibles, builds it. It was reported that VW brand CEO Herbert Diess had been dismissive of a convertible SUV only months before the car was announced. An Edition Grey with matte paint was unveiled in December 2022, with deliveries starting in Germany in February 2023.

Where is the Volkswagen Taos sold?

The Taos is not marketed in core European markets. It is sold in the Americas and Russia, and as the Tharu in China. The Tharu came first, in October 2018, and a restyled version was released as the Taos in October 2020 for North America, South America and Russia.

The name Taos comes from Taos, New Mexico, while Tharu is taken from a people native to Nepal and northern India. During development it was known as Project Tarek. VW's brand sales chief, Jurgen Stackmann, described a regional project that had become global, and global annual sales were projected at 400,000 units.

North America got the Taos on 13 October 2020 for the 2022 model year, the fifth addition to the VW SUV family in four years. It is built in Mexico and uses a 1.5-litre turbo four, the TSI Evo, with 158 hp and 184 lb ft of torque at 1,750 rpm. Front-wheel-drive cars have an eight-speed automatic, while 4Motion cars paired it with a seven-speed DSG until the 2025 model, when an eight-speed automatic replaced the DSG. A 12.3-inch Digital Cockpit is standard, the car can act as a Wi-Fi hotspot, and buyers choose S, SE or SEL trim. The 2025 refresh brought new bodywork and a 174 hp version of the 1.5-litre engine.

Mexican Taos models use a 1.4-litre TSI with 150 PS and come only with front-wheel drive in Trendline, Comfortline or Highline trims. In South America the car is built at General Pacheco in Argentina, the first C-segment SUV made there, with a flex-fuel 1.4-litre TSI from Sao Carlos in Brazil. About 20 percent of its parts were locally made in 2022 and 70 percent of production is exported.

The Russian Taos, announced on 4 March 2021, comes from GAZ at Nizhny Novgorod, next to the Skoda Karoq, and shares its rear quarter panel and chassis, making it shorter than the Americas Taos. Engines are a 1.6-litre MPI with 110 hp and a 1.4-litre TSI with 150 hp, and trims are Respect, Status and Exclusive.

The Chinese Tharu

The Tharu was shown in March 2018 as the Powerful Family SUV and reached Chinese buyers in late October 2018 from SAIC Volkswagen, with assembly at three sites including Urumqi. It carries a Beats audio system. The Philippines received the Chinese-built car on 29 September 2023, and it was discontinued there in September 2025 after the distributorship agreement ended.

The electric e-Tharu followed in November 2020 with a 136 PS motor and 290 Nm, plus a 44.1 kWh battery rated at 315 km (196 mi) on the NEDC cycle. It is claimed to cover 415 km at a steady 60 km/h. The Latin American Taos earned five stars from Latin NCAP in 2021.

What is the Volkswagen Atlas?

The Atlas is a mid-size crossover manufactured since 2017, built on the MQB platform for American, Chinese and Middle Eastern buyers. Buyers in China, Mexico, the Middle East and Vietnam know it as the Teramont, and the first generation was produced in Chattanooga, Tennessee, for markets outside China.

A concept called the CrossBlue previewed it in September 2013 as a diesel plug-in hybrid. The Atlas was introduced at the Los Angeles show on 17 November 2016 and reached American and Canadian dealers in May 2017, badged as a 2018 model. Dealers rejected the Teramont name for North America, which is how the car got the Atlas name. Features included up to 96.8 cubic feet (2.74 cubic metres) of rear cargo space, seventeen cup holders and a third row reachable with child seats still fitted. The 2018 Atlas earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick rating in January 2018.

For 2021 it gained a new front end based on the Atlas Cross Sport. The 2024 model year, revealed in February 2023, added a shift-by-wire gear selector, a 10.3-inch digital instrument panel and a 12.0-inch touchscreen. It also lost the VR6 engine because of tougher EPA emissions rules, and the only engine left is a turbocharged 2.0-litre four with 269 hp (273 PS; 201 kW), with towing capacity unchanged at 5,000 pounds (2,268 kg).

The Teramont was unveiled at the 2016 Guangzhou show and is built by SAIC-Volkswagen for China. It offers 2.0-litre TSI engines with 186 hp or 220 hp and a VR6 with 299 hp, each with a seven-speed DSG and 4MOTION all-wheel drive. The VR6 is built in Germany and shipped to the Shanghai factory. VW developed it for a market where engines above 3.0 litres face heavy excise tax.

The Cross Sport and the second generation

The Atlas Cross Sport (Teramont X to Chinese buyers, Teramont Cross Sport to Mexican ones) shares the 2.98 metre wheelbase of the three-row car but has a lower roof, an angled rear window and two rows of seats. It measures 4.97 metres long. It debuted in North America in early 2020 and was previewed by the CrossBlue Coupe concept of 2013. The Teramont X was unveiled at the Shanghai show in April 2019.

The second generation was launched in 2025, with the Chinese Teramont Pro unveiled on 17 February 2025. The new Atlas was introduced on 31 March 2026 and made its first show appearance in New York on 3 April 2026. The second-generation Atlas Cross Sport followed on 10 August 2026, with a greenhouse 2.1 inches (53 mm) shorter and a wheelbase 5.4 inches (140 mm) shorter than the three-row car.
