Toyota's small crossover began in Japan and Europe in 2020, then returned as a larger Indonesian-built model with a hybrid that was a world first.
The Toyota Yaris Cross is a subcompact SUV name used for two vehicles. The XP210 went on sale in Japan in 2020 and reached Europe in 2021, while the larger AC200 was unveiled in Indonesia in May 2023 and sold across Southeast Asia.
The Toyota Yaris Cross is a name that Toyota has used for two subcompact SUVs in the B-segment. The first, the XP210, arrived in 2020 as a crossover counterpart to the Yaris hatchback, and the second, the AC200, followed in Indonesia in 2023. Both are aimed at buyers who want a small, raised car with an SUV look.
What is the Yaris Cross?
The Yaris Cross is a nameplate covering two different vehicles. The first is the XP210, built on Toyota's New Global Architecture. The second is the AC200, which is larger and sits on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture, and it is sold mainly in Southeast Asia, Taiwan and parts of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Both versions sit in the subcompact SUV class, and they share the same basic idea of a tall, practical car with a crossover look. The XP210 is the version most Europeans and Japanese buyers know, while the AC200 is the one many emerging markets now see.
A small SUV that started on a cancelled show stand in 2020 and returned as a larger, locally built hybrid.
Where did the XP210 come from?
The XP210 was planned for the 2020 Geneva Motor Show, but the event was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Toyota released the first pictures and specifications on 23 April 2020 instead, and the car reached Japan that year. The first public images therefore came from Toyota itself in April.
Development ran alongside the Yaris hatchback under the Toyota Compact Car Company. Yasunori Suezawa was chief engineer, and Hideaki Hayashi was deputy chief engineer. The car replaced the Ist and Urban Cruiser in Japan and Europe.
Australia received the car in November 2020, and Europe followed in mid-2021. The first Yaris Cross rolled out of the French factory in July 2021, the same plant that built the standard Yaris.
How does the Yaris Cross look and drive?
The design was a joint effort between Toyota's European and Japanese studios. It takes cues from the Yaris hatchback and borrows the more angular look of the larger RAV4, with a styling direction that aims for a rugged stance. The result is a car that looks taller and more rugged than its hatchback sibling.
Toyota says the car resembles a diamond from above, because its wider midsection let designers broaden the wheel arches. Ground clearance sits 30 mm (1.2 in) higher than the standard Yaris, while the wheelbase is identical to the European Yaris, so the car shares its footprint with the hatchback.
The dashboard shares many components with the Yaris hatchback. Toyota also offered an all-wheel-drive option for the hybrid, an unusual choice in a class that is mostly front-wheel drive in Europe. The system, called AWD-i, uses an electrified rear axle with no driveshaft.
Under the WLTP test cycle, the AWD-i version emits 135 g/km of CO2, while the front-wheel-drive variant emits 120 g/km. Those figures give buyers a clear way to compare the two.
Where is the Yaris Cross built?
Production of the XP210 takes place at Toyota Motor East Japan and at Toyota Motor Manufacturing France, which also build the standard Yaris. Toyota planned to produce 150,000 units a year at the French factory. Both plants also build the standard Yaris.
The AC200 has a different production base. Production began on 13 June 2023 at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia facility in Karawang, West Java, for local sales and exports to 25 countries.
How was the Yaris Cross updated?
Europe saw the first refresh of the XP210 on 21 November 2023. The update introduced a Premiere Edition trim, dressed in a two-tone Urban Khaki finish, with green touches inside on the seats, dash and door trims. Both changes were aimed at the European market.
Power from the electric motor rose to 130 hp (97 kW; 132 PS), and torque reached 136 lb ft (185 N m, or 18.9 kg m). A new Toyota Smart Connect system with a 12.3-inch instrument panel and a 10.5-inch head unit was fitted, along with revised safety features and a new Juniper Blue paint.
The European facelift arrived on 16 April 2026, when it was shown to the press. It brought a redesigned front fascia, LED headlights, a honeycomb grille, new 18- and 17-inch alloy wheels and a Precious Bronze paint option. The Trail grade received SakuraTouch leather, made from PVC with recycled materials.
What engines does the Yaris Cross use?
The petrol model uses a 1.5-litre 2NR-VE unit that makes 78 kW (106 PS; 105 hp), and its torque figure reads 102 lb ft, equal to 138 N m or 14.1 kg m. Its hybrid sibling, the 2NR-VEX, was a world-first application of an Atkinson-cycle engine in this format.
The hybrid pairs a 67 kW (91 PS; 90 hp) Atkinson engine with an electric motor rated at 59 kW (80 PS; 79 hp), for a total output of 82 kW (111 PS; 110 hp). A 0.7 kWh lithium-ion battery sits under the rear seats.
Transmissions vary by market. Indonesian models offered a 5-speed manual on the entry grade, with CVTs on the others, while Philippine petrol models used Daihatsu's Dual Mode CVT. The hybrid is paired with Toyota's eCVT transmission, and Toyota Safety Sense is standard on most trims.

Its front section is shared with the Avanza and Veloz, while the underbody and wheelbase were reworked. Ground clearance is rated at 210 mm (8.3 in), which gives it a more elevated stance than the XP210.
In Indonesia the car started with G, S and S HEV trims. Toyota Safety Sense is standard on the S and S Hybrid, and a GR Parts package of body kits was offered as an option. The 33rd Indonesia International Motor Show, held on 5 February 2026, saw a new G HEV trim join the range.
