The short answer

Ford's electric compact SUV, the Mach-E, arrived in November 2019 and went on sale from December 2020. Its line-up stretches from rear-drive cars to a 480 hp GT, and it took the 2021 North American SUV of the Year title.

Ford's Mustang Mach-E is an all-electric crossover that arrived in late 2019 and reached buyers in December 2020 as a 2021 model. It borrows the Mustang badge without being a coupe, and its line-up runs from rear-drive family cars to a 480 hp GT, plus racing prototypes and special-service vehicles.

What is the Ford Mustang Mach-E?

Built by Ford, the Mach-E is an electric compact SUV introduced in November 2019 and on sale from December 2020 onwards. Its range runs from rear-drive versions to a 480 hp GT, and the model won the 2021 North American SUV of the Year award.

The car sits in the Mustang series, but its body is a crossover rather than a two-door coupe. That gap between badge and body is the central fact to understand before looking at the trims, batteries and motorsport spin-offs that followed.

An electric crossover that carried the Mustang name, from rear-drive family cars to a Pikes Peak winner.

Where did the Mach-E name come from?

The name was inspired by the Mach 1 variant of the first-generation Mustang. Ford first teased the car as the Ford Mach 1 during development, but it retracted the name after strong public opposition. Ford CEO Jim Farley described the tease as an evaluation.

The reversal left the car with its final Mustang Mach-E name. The Mach 1 reference survived only as the inspiration behind the choice, which made the crossover's connection to the coupe a matter of naming rather than body design.

How does the Mach-E cabin work?

The cabin is built around a vertically mounted 15.5 in (394 mm) touchscreen with a rotary dial, and most vehicle functions run through it. Ford's SYNC 4 software drives the screen and can be updated wirelessly. A 10.2 in (260 mm) digital cluster sits in front of the driver.

The steering wheel keeps several physical buttons, so the driver is not forced to use the screen for every task. The doors open by buttons, with small fixed handles protruding from the front doors instead of conventional handles. A smartphone or a keypad built into the B-pillar can serve as the door key.

What platform does the Mach-E use?

The Mach-E rides on the Global Electrified 1 (GE1) platform. It is a heavily reworked version of the C2 platform, which also underpins the fourth-generation Focus and the Kuga and Escape models. Rear cargo room is 29 cu ft (821 L).

A waterproof frunk under the hood adds 4.8 cu ft (136 L) of storage. Charging can be done from a home AC charger or from DC fast chargers that deliver up to 150 kW.

Which trims and battery packs were offered?

In the US the Mach-E came as Select, California Route 1 Edition, Premium and GT, with a limited First Edition trim at launch for the 2021 model year. The car launched with two battery pack sizes and three power outputs.

For the 2024 model year Ford dropped the California Route 1 and added the Rally above the GT, which changed the top of the range.

How far can the Mach-E go and how quick is it?

The entry rear-drive car uses a 75.7 kWh pack, with 68 kWh usable, and a 266 hp (198 kW; 270 PS) motor. The extended-range rear-drive model uses a 98.8 kWh pack, with 88 kWh usable, and a 290 hp (216 kW; 294 PS) motor. Both rear-drive packs claim 0-60 mph in 6.1 seconds or less.

EPA range is around 230 miles (370 km) for the smaller pack and 300 miles (480 km) for the larger one. Dual-motor all-wheel-drive versions take either pack with 266 hp or 346 hp (258 kW; 351 PS) of output, and the EPA rates them at 211 and 270 miles (340 and 435 km).

Independent testing produced different numbers. Edmunds recorded 304 miles (489 km) with the extended-range pack, while Car and Driver reached 60 mph in 5.1 seconds with the extended-range model.

How powerful is the GT?

The GT is the performance model, producing 480 hp (358 kW; 487 PS) from the 98.8 kWh pack. Ford targeted 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds and a range of 250 miles (400 km). The GT Performance Edition was revealed on December 2, 2020.

The GT Performance Edition adds 20-inch alloy wheels, Pirelli tyres and red Brembo calipers,. Its 480 hp motor generates 860 Nm (634 lb ft) of torque and gives a range of 235 miles (378 km). A setting called Unbridled Extend Mode raises cooling and caps peak motor output.

What changed in the battery and charging after 2023?

For the 2023 model year Ford added LFP battery chemistry and updated pack capacities. In May 2023 Ford announced it would integrate the NACS DC fast charging system, which gives access to more than 12,000 chargers worldwide.

As of the 2025 model year, US cars still carry a native CCS1 port. Ford offers a NACS to CCS1 adapter as an option, and buyers who did not order it from the factory can buy it through Ford dealers for $200.

What were the Mach-E 1400 and Super Mustang Mach-E?

The Mach-E 1400 is a test-bed prototype, first tested by Vaughn Gittin Jr., developed with RTR Vehicles and Ford Performance. Its power was raised to 1,400 hp (1,044 kW; 1,419 PS). The Super Mustang Mach-E is a Pikes Peak hill-climb demonstrator unveiled in June 2025, built with STARD.

The 1400 is made mostly from composite fiber and drives through seven electric motors, fed by a 56.8 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt battery. It made its public debut at the 2020 NHRA U.S. Nationals, after more than 10,000 hours of joint work by the two developers.

The Super Mustang carries three STARD UHP 6-phase motors that together make 1,400 hp (1,044 kW; 1,419 PS). Its lithium-polymer cells total 50 kWh and the system runs at 799V. It replaced the Ford Performance F-150 Lightning SuperTruck entry from the year before.

How did the Mach-E perform at Pikes Peak?

The Super Mustang made its maiden run on June 22, 2025, finishing second with a time of 3:42.252. In 2026 Romain Dumas drove it in No. 125 to win in 8:18.202, his sixth Pikes Peak victory and the second for Ford Racing.

Dumas had five Pikes Peak wins before the 2026 result, so the victory extended a long record on the mountain. The car's downforce is rated at 6,900 lbf (30.7 kN) at 150 mph,.

Did New York City buy the Mach-E?

Yes. In December 2021 New York City announced it was buying 184 Mach-E SUVs as emergency vehicles. These GT service vehicles were rated at 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds, the same figure Ford targeted for the production GT.

What is the Mach-E Rally?

The Mustang Mach-E Rally began as a concept shown at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2023. Ford introduced the production version in September 2023 with an electric motor on each axle, giving 358 kW (480 hp) in total. It has sat above the GT in the line-up since the 2024 model year.

Where is the Mach-E built and why did production change?

The Mach-E is assembled at Cuautitlan Assembly in Cuautitlan Izcalli, Mexico, which is a different arrangement from the combustion Mustang models. Former Ford CEO Jim Hackett said building it in Mexico let Ford profit from the first vehicle.

Production also reached China. In February 2021 Ford announced that the Changan Ford joint venture would build the car for the Chinese domestic market. Changan Ford ended that production in 2025, and the model was discontinued there shortly after because of poor sales.

Trouble arrived in 2022. In April 2022 Ford stopped accepting new orders for the 2022 model year. In June 2022 the CFO said rising raw material costs had wiped out the Mach-E's profitability.

What recalls and safety results affected the Mach-E?

A select recall in May 2022 covered 2021 Mach-E AWD models over unintended acceleration. The top 2021 trim earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick rating, while NHTSA opened an investigation after a crash in which driver assistance was in use.

The recall applied to selected 2021 AWD cars rather than the whole range.

What awards and marketing did the Mach-E receive?

Car and Driver named the Mach-E its first EV of the Year in 2021, beating ten rivals including three Tesla models and the Audi e-tron. Ford hired Idris Elba to star in teaser commercials for the car.

The comparison included a 1,000 miles (1,600 km) road trip from Michigan to Virginia.

On July 9, 2021, a team set a Guinness World Record by driving from John O'Groats to Land's End, covering 840 miles (1,350 km) on three charges. A later team beat that record with one charge stop of 43 minutes 13 seconds.
