The short answer

The Chery Tiggo 5x is a subcompact crossover SUV that Chery Automobile has built since 2017. It is sold as the Tiggo 4 in most global markets and was first previewed by the Concept Beta at the 2014 Beijing Auto Show, before going on sale in China in the second half of 2017.

The Chery Tiggo 5x is a small crossover that Chery built in China from 2017, and it became the Tiggo 4 in most of the world. It was the fifth model in Chery's Tiggo crossover series. Over the years it gained facelifts, hybrid versions and a short-lived electric variant, and it was also sold under other badges by partner companies.

Where did the Tiggo 5x come from?

The look was previewed in the Concept Beta, first shown in April 2014 at the Beijing Auto Show. The production car reached Chinese showrooms in the second half of 2017, slotting in above the subcompact Tiggo 3x and below the compact Tiggo 3.

The Tiggo 5x was the sportier version of the Tiggo 5, although the two were completely different models. Its platform was later shared with the Cowin Showjet in 2019. In China it came with just one engine, a 1.5-litre inline-four.

Sold as the Tiggo 4 in most markets, this small Chery crossover changed its name at almost every border.

What changed in the facelifts?

The first facelift arrived in 2019 with revised front and rear fascias. The new front shared the family design language of the larger first-generation Tiggo 8. A second facelift followed in 2020, with a front that matched the second-generation Tiggo 7, and export markets often sold that version as the Pro.

A third facelift, aimed at the export Tiggo 4, was revealed in April 2024 at the Chery International Business Conference in Wuhu, Anhui. It brought redesigned front and rear fascias, headlights taken from the second-generation Tiggo 7, plus a fresh C-pillar treatment. The interior borrowed the dashboard that had debuted on the Russian Tiggo 4 Pro in March 2024.

The updated car went on sale as the Tiggo Cross in South Africa and Indonesia, next to the older Tiggo 4 Pro and Tiggo 5x.

What was the Tiggo e?

The Tiggo e was an electric version offered briefly in China after its introduction in 2019. It used a 53.6 kWh battery for a claimed range of 401 km (249 mi) on the NEDC cycle. The drivetrain made 95 kW (127 hp; 129 PS), with torque of 250 N m (184 lb ft, or 25.5 kg m).

Its top speed was 160 km/h (99 mph), and it accelerated from 0 to 50 km/h (0 to 31 mph) in 3.9 seconds.

Which engines did the Tiggo 5x use?

Most markets used a 1.5-litre petrol, either naturally aspirated with a CVT or turbocharged with a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Hybrids arrived later in several countries, using a 1.5-litre petrol hybrid that Chery marketed under a range of names. The table sets out the main combinations by market.

At first the Australian line-up offered only the 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol, so the hybrid was the first alternative powertrain on sale there.

An updated Tiggo 4, built on the export-market facelift, arrived in April 2025 as a 2026 model. It kept the Urban and Ultimate grades and the Tiggo 4 Pro's engine line-up, but it had a new rear fascia. The hybrid followed in August 2025.
