The short answer

The Audi Q5 Sportback is the coupe-style body of Audi's compact luxury SUV. The Q5 family began in 2008, the Sportback arrived in January 2021, and the third-generation Sportback was unveiled on 26 November 2024. Engines range from a 268 hp four to a 362 hp V6.

The Audi Q5 Sportback is the coupe-styled body of Audi's compact luxury SUV, a family that began in 2008 and has now reached its third generation. The Sportback joined the range in January 2021, and the new third-generation version was unveiled on 26 November 2024.

This guide covers the whole Q5 line, because the Sportback shares its engines, platforms and much of its history with the standard SUV. It follows the first car, the performance SQ5, the plug-in hybrids and the safety and emissions reports that shaped the model's reputation.

Where did the Audi Q5 come from?

The Q5 launched in 2008 as a compact luxury crossover from Audi. It ranked third in the B8 family, behind the A5 and the fourth-generation A4, and all three rode on the MLB platform. European deliveries started in October 2008.

Audi first showed the idea in concept form. The Cross Cabriolet quattro, a two-door convertible, appeared at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show. Its 3.0 TDI made 240 PS (177 kW; 237 hp), plus 500 Nm (369 lb-ft), and the car also had quattro four-wheel drive, an eight-speed automatic and 21-inch wheels.

The production Q5 made its public debut at the Beijing show in 2008, then appeared in Los Angeles later that year. Early cars included a 2.0 TFSI quattro rated at 211 PS and a 3.0 TDI quattro. North American, Canadian and Brazilian cars were offered with a 3.2 FSI.

A compact Audi SUV that grew from a 2008 crossover into a family with coupe styling, plug-in hybrid power and a 2,000 kg towing rating.

What did the first-generation Q5 offer at launch?

The first Q5 paired quattro all-wheel drive with a range of petrol and diesel engines. Buyers in North America received the 3.2 FSI, while European customers from 2009 could choose a 180 PS 2.0 TFSI or a 143 PS 2.0 TDI. Gearbox choice depended on both engine and market.

German models fitted a standard seven-speed S tronic to every V6, with an eight-speed Tiptronic as an option on the 211 PS 2.0 TFSI quattro. US and Canadian 3.2 FSI cars used a six-speed Tiptronic, while the 2.0 TFSI there came with an eight-speed unit.

Towing was rated at 2.0 tonnes, and the standard hill descent control regulated speed on steep descents below 30 km/h (19 mph). A roof-mounted load of 100 kg (220 lb) also changed how the ESP behaved, with the system intervening earlier at the handling limit.

Indian buyers received the car from June 2009. The first Indian cars were built at Ingolstadt, and later production moved to a plant in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. Launch engines there were a 3.0 TDI and a 211 PS 2.0 TFSI.

How did concept cars shape the Q5?

Audi used several concepts to test the Q5 idea before production. A 408 PS V6 appeared in a 2009 custom car, and a fuel-cell FCEV was demonstrated later that year. Audi also tried a hybrid, which it paused over battery crash results and then resumed in 2009.

The 2009 custom car was shown at the Worthersee Tour that year. It used a 3.0 TFSI V6 producing 408 PS (300 kW; 402 hp) between 6,000 and 7,000 rpm and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) from 3,000 to 5,500 rpm. Its track was 90 mm wider and its ride height 60 mm lower, with 21-inch wheels and ceramic brakes.

The fuel-cell concept appeared at CEP Berlin on 19 October 2009. It paired an 85 kW PEMFC fuel cell with a 22 kW lithium-ion battery plus an asynchronous motor rated at 230 Nm, a route far removed from the petrol and diesel line-up that went on sale.

The hybrid had the rockiest path. Audi first intended to offer it as a launch model, but it suspended the plan after nickel metal hydride batteries gave unsatisfactory crash test results. The programme returned in 2009 with a battery pack that gave about 3 km (2 mi) of electric driving at up to 100 km/h (62 mph). A production version was planned for Japan in 2012.

What is the Q5 Sportback?

The Sportback is the coupe-style body of the Q5 and the SQ5, with a sloping roofline that separates it from the standard SUV. Audi introduced it in January 2021 as a variant of both models, and the third-generation version followed in 2024 and 2025.

The Sportback reached Malaysia shortly after the facelifted Q5 arrived there in August 2021. The third-generation Sportback was unveiled on 26 November 2024, after the standard model had been shown on 2 September 2024.

North American buyers saw an unusual launch. Audi introduced the new car in April 2025 as the 2025 Q5, alongside the previous generation, which carried the same model year. The standard Q5 carries 1,473 L (52.0 cu ft) of luggage, while the SQ5 Sportback manages 1,388 L (49.0 cu ft).

How did the second-generation Q5 change?

The second generation debuted at the 2016 Paris show, with output starting at Audi's Mexican factory on 30 September 2016, ahead of the 2017 model year. North American cars arrived in 2018 with a 2.0 TFSI engine and Audi's Quattro with Ultra Technology.

Mexican production replaced German output for North America. The 2.0 TFSI produced 252 hp (188 kW; 255 PS), with torque of 273 lb-ft (370 Nm). Ultra Technology disconnects the drive to the rear wheels when all-wheel traction is not needed, and Audi says power returns to the back within milliseconds of slip being detected.

US cars dropped diesel after the emissions scandal, and the car was offered only with the 2.0T '45 TFSI' engine. The Q5 used a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch in place of the earlier eight-speed automatic, while the SQ5 kept the ZF unit and a rear-biased quattro system.

The long-wheelbase Q5L was unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show. It added 88 mm (3.5 in) of length and gave 23 percent more legroom, and it was offered as a longer alternative to the standard car.

In 2020 Audi added the Q5 TFSI e plug-in hybrid. Its 14.1 kWh lithium-ion battery gave an EPA range estimate of 20 miles (32 km), and the output was 362 hp (270 kW; 367 PS) with 500 Nm (369 lb-ft). It reached 60 mph (97 km/h) in 5.0 seconds. For 2022, the battery grew to 17.9 kWh, and EPA range rose to 23 miles (37 km).

The 2021 facelift brought Generation 3 infotainment, a digital marketplace in the myAudi app where owners can buy Audi Connect plans, plus SiriusXM with 360L. Exterior revisions covered the grille, bumper intakes, sill and rear trim. District Green and Ultra Blue joined the paint range on the plug-in and SQ5 variants.

How fast was the SQ5?

The SQ5 is Audi's performance version of the Q5. The first SQ5 TDI, launched in 2013, was the first S model from Audi with a diesel engine. It produced 313 PS and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft), reached 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.1 seconds and was electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph).

The 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 delivers 313 PS between 3,900 and 4,500 rpm and 650 Nm between 1,450 and 2,800 rpm. Quattro with torque vectoring sends power to all four wheels, and sport suspension lowers the body by 30 mm (1.18 in).

A more realistic comparison is the BMW X3 xDrive35d, which offers slightly better fuel economy but is a little slower. It takes 5.8 seconds to reach 100 km/h, and its top speed is 240 km/h (149 mph).

A limited run of 50 SQ5 TDI exclusive concept cars, finished in Aral Blue, was revealed at the 2012 Paris show, with sales opening in early 2013. In 2015 Audi added a plus model whose output rose to 340 PS (250 kW), with 700 Nm (516 lb-ft), quilted Nappa leather seats and 21-inch wheels as standard.

The petrol SQ5 3.0 TFSI quattro arrived in 2013 after its debut at the Detroit Auto Show. Its output was 354 PS (260 kW; 349 hp), peaking between 6,000 and 6,500 rpm, and torque of 470 Nm (346.65 lb-ft) arrived between 4,000 and 4,500 rpm. It used an eight-speed Tiptronic with quattro all-wheel drive.

What does the third-generation Q5 offer?

The third-generation Q5 uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four producing 268 hp, with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and standard all-wheel drive. The SQ5 uses a 362 hp (270 kW; 367 PS) 3.0-litre V6. Both models carry a 2,000 kg (4,400 lb) towing rating.

The base car reaches 60 mph (97 km/h) in 5.8 seconds. Its mild-hybrid system adds 18 kW and 230 Nm and can run on electricity alone at low speeds. Power passes through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, and all-wheel drive comes as standard.

The SQ5 makes 362 hp, against 349 hp for its predecessor, with 406 lb-ft of torque. Its 3.0-litre V6 is turbocharged, and the car keeps the all-wheel drive layout of the range.

Inside, a digital instrument cluster measuring 11.9 in (30 cm) sits behind a 14.5 in (37 cm) touchscreen. Climate controls moved to a dedicated strip at the bottom of that screen, and there are no physical climate buttons, a point reviewers criticised.

The Q5 Prestige and every SQ5 come with air suspension and active adaptive dampers. A 10.9 in (28 cm) passenger screen is offered as an option on Prestige trim, and an optional Bang and Olufsen system uses 16 speakers with noise cancelling. A Dynamic Interaction Light runs across the cabin.

How far can the plug-in Q5 travel on electricity?

The third-generation e-hybrid combines the 2.0-litre engine with a motor and a 25.9 kWh pack, of which 20.7 kWh is usable. It comes in 295 hp and 362 hp versions, and its WLTP electric range is about 62 mi (100 km), up from 38 mi (61 km).

The battery is 45 percent larger than the outgoing plug-in pack. Audi revealed the e-hybrid variants in June 2025, and the higher-output version matches the SQ5 power figure of 362 hp.

The 2026 Q5 is priced from roughly $54,000, which places it against the BMW X3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC.

How did the Q5 perform in safety testing?

Euro NCAP tested a 2009 Q5 five-door SUV. Its equipment included airbags at the front and sides, seatbelt pretensioners and load limiters, all fitted as standard. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety later crash-tested the model, and the 2022 Q5 earned its Top Safety Pick+ award.

NHTSA also tested a 2016 Q5. Later cars gained Audi side assist and pre sense rear systems through the Convenience Package, which was expanded for 2019 alongside heated front seats and roof crossbars as standard.

Did the Q5 face emissions concerns?

Two issues drew attention. In August 2020 the German broadcaster tagesschau.de reported that steering input changed exhaust emissions under test conditions. Separately, the first-generation 3.2 FSI engine was prone to carbon buildup in its secondary air injection system, a repair that often arose after the warranty ended.

Owners and buyers should read these reports as part of the model's history rather than a verdict on every car. They relate to particular test conditions and one engine family, so they do not describe the whole range.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Q5 Sportback a separate model?
The Sportback is a body style within the Q5 family rather than a separate model line. It shares platforms and most engines with the SUV, and the SQ5 Sportback has its own cargo figure of 1,388 L (49.0 cu ft).
How long has the Q5 been on sale?
The Q5 first went on sale in 2008 and reached its third generation in 2024 and 2025. Each generation added new engines, hybrid options and updated technology, and the SQ5 has been the performance version since 2013.
Which Q5 has the most power?
The SQ5 and the higher-output e-hybrid both reach 362 hp. The earlier 2015 SQ5 TDI plus was a diesel with 700 Nm (516 lb-ft), which gave it more torque than the current models.
Can the Q5 tow a caravan?
Yes. Both the third-generation Q5 and SQ5 are rated to tow 2,000 kg (4,400 lb). Earlier cars used a trailer stability program to control snaking, and hill descent control holds speed below 30 km/h (19 mph) on steep slopes.
