The short answer

Alexander George Lynn, born in 1993 in Great Dunmow, Essex, races sportscars for Jota Sport in the 2026 WEC. He won the GP3 title in 2014, took a Formula E race win in London, and stood on the Le Mans podium with Cadillac in 2023.

Alex Lynn is a British racing driver from Great Dunmow who has raced single-seaters, Formula E and sportscars at the highest level. He won the GP3 Series title in 2014, took the 2013 Macau Grand Prix and finished third at Le Mans in 2023 with Cadillac, a result that gave the team its first overall podium at the race.

Who is Alex Lynn?

Lynn was born on 17 September 1993 and grew up in Essex. He attended Saint Nicholas School in Old Harlow before moving into full-time racing, first in karts and then in single-seaters. He is now a Cadillac driver in the World Endurance Championship, competing in the 2026 season for Jota Sport.

He started karting at the age of eleven with Andy Cox Racing. After four years in the Mini Max and JICA classes he switched to Ricky Flynn Motorsport for the KF2 category in 2008, where he finished sixth in the British KF2 championship.

A karting start in Essex, a GP3 title, a Macau win and a Le Mans podium: a route through every format that has kept him near the front.

How did Lynn move from karts into single-seaters?

Lynn made his single-seater debut in 2009 in the Formula Renault UK Winter Cup with Fortec Motorsport, finishing tenth in the standings. He also finished the main Formula Renault UK Series in tenth place, winning the Graduate Cup and taking his first podium at Brands Hatch. Fortec kept him for the following years.

He returned to Fortec for the 2010 Winter Cup and the 2011 main series and became champion in both. He also tested his skills abroad, contesting the Toyota Racing Series in the interval between the two seasons. In that series he won the first round at Teretonga Park and finished ninth overall.

What did Lynn achieve in British Formula 3?

In 2012 Lynn moved into the British Formula 3 Championship with Fortec for a fourth consecutive year. He finished fourth in the championship, with a race win at Silverstone and five podium places, plus two podiums in the European series that year.

In November 2012 he went to Macau and qualified on pole for the qualification race, the first rookie to do so since 2006. He finished on the podium in third place, and that performance was the basis of his move to Prema Powerteam for the 2013 FIA European Formula 3 Championship.

Lynn finished third overall in the European championship in 2013 and was the highest-placed rookie. He won three races, took 14 podiums and five poles, including a triple pole at his home round at Brands Hatch. That season also ended with a memorable Macau weekend.

Why is the 2013 Macau Grand Prix important?

In November 2013 Lynn returned to Macau to race for Theodore Racing by Prema, a joint project linking SJM Holdings, Teddy Yip Jr's outfit and Prema Powerteam. He won the qualification race to start from pole for the main race, then dominated the main race from start to finish.

The win made him the first Briton to win the Macau Grand Prix since 2007. It also came in the 30th anniversary year of Theodore's previous win at the event, when Ayrton Senna was at the wheel, which gave the result extra significance for the team.

How did the GP3 title come about?

Lynn joined Carlin for the 2014 GP3 Series while also part of the Red Bull junior setup. He opened his account on debut at the Circuit de Catalunya, where a pole start and the fastest lap delivered the maximum haul of points from that race.

He won again at the Red Bull Ring, and by the summer break he led the championship by 31 points over Richie Stanaway. A string of podiums and strong finishes kept him in front, and he clinched the title at the season finale in Abu Dhabi.

The GP3 title earned him a day of testing with GP2 team ART Grand Prix and then a seat with DAMS for the 2015 GP2 Series, which he finished sixth in the standings. He also tested for Lotus F1 after the title and was confirmed as Williams's development driver on 28 January 2015.

What were his GP2 seasons like?

In 2015 Lynn won two GP2 races, at Barcelona and the Hungaroring, and finished sixth in the championship alongside Pierre Gasly. He remained with DAMS for 2016, winning two sprint races at Barcelona and Hockenheim and again finishing sixth in the standings before leaving the team at the end of the season.

How did Lynn's Formula E career develop?

Lynn was announced as one of four drivers testing for Jaguar at Donington Park in August 2016. He landed the reserve role at DS Virgin Racing in January 2017, and made his race debut at the New York ePrix in July that year, taking over from Jose Maria Lopez for the race. He qualified on pole in his first race.

In 2017-18 he raced full-time for DS Virgin, scoring 17 points and finishing 16th in the standings. In 2018-19 he joined Jaguar and replaced Nelson Piquet Jr. from the seventh round, then finished with ten points and 18th in the standings.

For 2020-21 he partnered Alexander Sims at Mahindra. He suffered a heavy crash at the 2021 Diriyah ePrix, launching over the rear wing of Mitch Evans's car, but he recovered from it. He took his first podium at the Valencia ePrix, and then won his first Formula E race in race two at his home event in London.

His season ended with three podiums, 78 points and 12th in the standings, 21 points behind champion Nyck de Vries. Oliver Rowland replaced him for 2021-22, and Lynn left the series after being unable to secure a seat.

What happened when Lynn moved into Hypercar racing?

For the 2023 WEC season he moved up to the Hypercar class, sharing a Cadillac V-Series.R with Earl Bamber and Richard Westbrook. He first appeared in the IMSA GTP category at the 2023 Rolex 24 at Daytona, where he qualified the car fifth and the team finished fourth. He completed more than eight hours of driver time, the third most of any driver in the race.

At Sebring he again took the car to fifth on the grid, the fastest of the new LMDh runners behind the factory Toyota and Ferrari entries. The No. 2 Cadillac finished fourth in the race. At Portimao and Spa-Francorchamps the team scored consistent top-five results, which set up the Le Mans round.

How important was Lynn's 2023 Le Mans podium?

At Le Mans in 2023 Lynn finished on the podium with Bamber and Westbrook in the No. 2 Cadillac. The car crossed the line third, a lap down on the winning Ferrari, but the result gave Cadillac its first overall podium at the race. Lynn drove 126 laps in the race, and he kept the car in the top five through a night of random rain showers.

He wore a tribute helmet honouring Derek Bell, a British sportscar driver with a long record of his own, and the design used Bell's white, red and blue colours. The podium remains the highlight of his endurance career to date.

How did the rest of the 2023 and 2024 seasons go?

The No. 2 Cadillac finished tenth at the 6 Hours of Monza after Lynn qualified the car fifth. Later in the year, at Bahrain, Lynn qualified third, but Bamber's lock-up at the first corner brought a penalty and dropped the car down the order. Lynn finished the year fifth in the points standings with 72 points, and the car was the highest-scoring LMDh in the Hypercar field.

In 2024 Lynn stayed with Cadillac for a full WEC season alongside Bamber in the No. 2 car. He also won a 2017 victory at the 12 Hours of Sebring in an earlier chapter of his endurance career, and he competed for Aston Martin Racing in the 2019-20 WEC.

Where does Lynn's career stand now?

Lynn is competing in the 2026 WEC season for Jota Sport, driving the No. 12 Cadillac V-Series.R. His career has taken him from karting in Essex to GP3 and GP2, through Formula E, and then to Le Mans podiums with a manufacturer team.

The consistency of his later years is the most striking feature of the record. He has been a regular points scorer across several categories, and his Hypercar results show a driver who can work through a race and move up the order.

What did Lynn's Toyota Racing Series and Sebring results show?

Lynn finished second overall in the 2013 Toyota Racing Series, the highest-placed international driver, and he won the 2017 12 Hours of Sebring. Both results came outside the single-seater programmes that defined his early career.

In January 2013 he returned to New Zealand to race in the Toyota Racing Series with M2 Competition. He collected four poles, three race wins, nine podiums and three fastest laps, which earned second place overall. The 2017 Sebring win then added a major endurance trophy to his record.

His full-time WEC programme with Aston Martin Racing followed in 2019-20, and that experience preceded his move to Cadillac for Hypercar racing.

What did Lynn's 2024 season with Cadillac involve?

In 2024 Lynn stayed with Cadillac as part of its only WEC entry, driving the No. 2 car for the full season alongside Earl Bamber. Other drivers joined the pair for the Qatar 1812 km, the Le Mans 24 Hours and the 8 Hours of Bahrain.

The pair contested the six-hour rounds on their own, which meant shared driving duties across the year. That arrangement gave Lynn consistent running in the car that had earned Cadillac its first overall podium at Le Mans. The season started from the same base as 2023, when that machine had been the top-scoring LMDh of the field, and Bamber returned as his teammate, which gave the team continuity.

What are the main highlights of his career?

The highlights are the 2014 GP3 Series title, the 2013 Macau Grand Prix win, a first Formula E race win at the London ePrix, and the 2023 Le Mans podium. Each of these came in a different category, which is part of what makes his record distinctive.

Taken together, these results show a driver who has moved between very different formats and kept winning or placing near the front. For a British driver from Essex, the route has run through karting, British single-seaters, Macau, Formula E and the World Endurance Championship.
