The short answer

Triple Eight Race Engineering signing Oli Wickham, 17, will make his first Trans Am Cup Series starts at Sandown International Raceway on the Penrite Oil Sandown 500 undercard, driving a Maverick Performance prepared Ford Mustang, Supercars said.

Triple Eight Race Engineering is giving 17-year-old Oli Wickham his first starts in the national Trans Am Cup Series, as part of a plan to bring him up through the categories. Wickham will race on the undercard of the Penrite Oil Sandown 500, Supercars said.

Wickham will drive a Maverick Performance prepared Ford Mustang Trans Am car in the final round of the Trans Am Series at Sandown International Raceway. He recently did a test day with Maverick Performance at Winton Motor Raceway in the same type of car.

Where Wickham has come from

Triple Eight signed Wickham away from the Erebus Academy. He has just finished a successful Mustang Cup Australia season, is the 2025 GR Cup champion, and was runner-up in the national Formula Ford series.

He has also spent time in the Red Bull Ampol Racing garage at Supercars rounds.

What Triple Eight says

When it signed Wickham, Triple Eight Managing Director Jamie Whincup said the team wanted to help move the rising driver through the ranks, to Super2 and then into Supercars.

Wickham said he was excited to make his Trans Am debut and to keep learning. He described the racing in the category as looking tough and said he wants to learn from the experienced regulars. He pointed to the drivers Trans Am has produced who went on to achieve great things in Australian motorsport, and said he hopes to follow that pathway.

He thanked Whincup and the Triple Eight team for the opportunity to broaden his skills, along with his supporters and partners, naming Earl Evans of Shaw and Partners Financial Services, Stephen Blackmore of SCTR and the team at ACL Bearings.
