The short answer

Mercedes-AMG has revealed the GT SUV, its first full-size SUV developed entirely in-house, at a festival in Stuttgart last Saturday. The electric range has three versions, with the top GT 63 producing up to 860 kW. The entry GT 53 starts at 113,050 euros and can be ordered from 20 October.

Mercedes-AMG has revealed the GT SUV at a festival at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart last Saturday. It is the first full-size SUV the performance division has developed entirely in-house, and the second model built on its AMG.EA high-performance architecture. Mercedes-AMG says the car pairs a full-size SUV's space with the feel of a sports car.

The range has three versions. The GT 53 is the entry model, with two synchronous motors, one on each axle, that together give 400 kW (544 hp). It starts at 113,050 euros and can be ordered from 20 October. The GT 55 and GT 63 follow in spring 2027. The GT 63 is the flagship, with three axial flux motors that produce up to 860 kW (1,169 hp).

Battery and charging

The high-voltage battery runs at 800 volts and uses directly cooled cylindrical cells. Mercedes-AMG says the battery was inspired by Formula 1 and developed in Affalterbach. Two sizes are offered, 106 kWh and 128 kWh. The smaller pack takes up to 600 kW of DC charging and adds up to 380 km of WLTP range within ten minutes. The 128 kWh pack reaches 710 kW and adds up to 450 km in the same time. For the larger battery, the company puts 10 to 80 per cent at up to 12 minutes.

Chassis, sound and performance

AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL+ replaces conventional anti-roll bars with active hydraulic elements that control pitch and roll. It is standard on the GT 63 and optional on the GT 55. Active rear-axle steering is standard, turning the rear wheels against the fronts below 80 km/h for agility and with them above that speed for stability. The AMGFORCE Sport+ programme adds an engine sound based on more than 100 measurements of AMG V8 and six-cylinder engines, along with simulated gear changes and seat shakers. In its top-of-the-range form the car reaches 100 km/h from a standstill in 2.5 seconds, and the company gives a top speed of 270 km/h with the Driver's Package.

Jorg Burzer, the Mercedes-Benz Group board member responsible for technology, said the car keeps sustained power, range and charging speed together, which he described as a step forward for electric SUVs. Stefan Weckbach, who chairs the management board of Mercedes-AMG, said the car is built to combine the practicality of a full-size SUV with the character of an AMG sports car.
