The short answer

The Geely Emgrand is a sedan, the Boyue a compact SUV, the Binyue a subcompact SUV and the Haoyue a mid-size SUV. Abroad they appear as the Coolray, Atlas, Starray and Okavango, and Proton in Malaysia sells them as the S70, X70, X50 and X90.

One Geely subcompact SUV answers to four names. In China it is the Binyue. In the Philippines, Russia, Indonesia, Vietnam and South Africa it is the Coolray. In Malaysia it is a Proton X50, and in Belarus it became a BelGee X50. The Geely Emgrand, Boyue, Binyue and Haoyue make up a large part of what the Chinese brand sells, and each has been renamed, rebadged or reworked so often that searching for one by its foreign name can lead to a different car.

Geely Emgrand: from premium brand to plain sedan

The Geely Emgrand began as the Emgrand EC7, launch car of a medium-to-high-end brand that Geely created in July 2009. Early cars carried Mitsubishi-sourced engines, a 1.5-litre 4G15 and a 1.8-litre 4G18. It was designed from the start as an export model, with Siemens, Lear and Saint-Gobain supplying electronics, seats and glass. Ahead of its European launch, it earned four stars from Euro NCAP, the first car designed and built in China to do so, and by October 2015 it was China's best-selling domestic sedan.

The UK launch was planned for late 2012 through Geely Auto UK, a Coventry company held jointly with Manganese Bronze Holdings and LTI. A dealer network of 40 small family garages was set up, with an estimated price of 10,000 pounds for the 1.5-litre car. Elsewhere the EC7 became a patchwork. Iraq's state-owned SCAI assembled it, Geelran sold it in Iran, and it reached Namibia and South Africa in 2013, priced at R149,000 in South Africa. Sri Lanka sold it under Geely's Micro brand, Yulon sold it as the Tobe M'way in Taiwan from May 2012, and Derways assembled it in Russia from 23 May 2012 and recalled cars built between 23 May and 21 November 2014 over faulty brake hoses. In Egypt, Ghabour Auto built the first generation from 2013 to 2019, with more than 150,000 vehicles made.

The second generation, shown at the 2014 Beijing Auto Show, wore the new Geely Earth emblem, which marked the end of Emgrand as a separate premium brand. A third generation followed in May 2018 as a sedan only, on the same platform as before, with a 2019 facelift for the National VI emissions standard and a GKUI infotainment system. The 2021 facelift, called the Emgrand Up, adopted what Geely calls its 4.0 design language.

The fourth generation, the SS11, was launched in China in August 2021 on a new platform. Its 1.5-litre engine made 114 hp (85 kW) and was the last in China to use Mitsubishi's 4G15. From 2023, Chinese Emgrands switched to a naturally aspirated Volvo-derived BHE15 engine, first making 120 to 124 horsepower and from 2026 a detuned 115 to 118. Buyers could pair it with a five-speed manual or a CVT, and a turbo with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox arrived for 2026. A 2025 facelift went on show in Egypt on 15 January 2025, built at the 6 October City factory and the second plant in the Middle East and Africa to make Geely cars.

Two quirks stand out. In 2022, Geely launched a methanol hybrid version for taxi fleets, first in Guiyang. Geely claims it as the world's first methanol hybrid electric sedan, with 132 horsepower (97 kW), methanol consumption as low as 9.2 litres per 100 km and a running cost under 0.3 RMB per kilometre. And Malaysia's Proton rebadged and re-engineered the Emgrand as the S70, launched on 28 November 2023 with a 1.5-litre turbo three-cylinder engine that was never offered in China. It earned five stars from ASEAN NCAP and came in Executive, Premium, Flagship and Flagship X forms. The fifth-generation Emgrand, unveiled on 11 October 2025, has a 1.5-litre turbo making 133 kW (178 hp) and 290 Nm, or hybrid and naturally aspirated options, and it is the first Emgrand without a manual gearbox.

Geely Boyue: Atlas, Azkarra, Starray and Proton X70

The Geely Boyue is a compact SUV that Geely Auto launched on 26 March 2016. It had been planned as part of the Emgrand series, but Geely sold it as an independent product, and in South America it was called the Emgrand X7 Sport. Overseas, the first generation became the Atlas. A team led by Peter Horbury designed it, mixing traditional Chinese cultural elements with modern fashion, and 700,000 had been produced 36 months after its launch.

The most important rebadge is the Proton X70. On 24 May 2017, DRB-HICOM announced it would sell 49.9 percent of Proton to Zhejiang Geely Automobile Holdings, and that Proton's first SUV would be based on the Boyue. The X70 reached Malaysia in December 2018, fully imported, with only small cosmetic changes. The key difference is that the X70 is right-hand drive while the Boyue is left-hand drive. Local assembly began in December 2019, and the X70 launched in Pakistan in December 2020.

The second generation of July 2019, the Boyue Pro, is known overseas as the Azkarra. It brought the GKUI19 infotainment system, a 1.8-litre turbo four and an optional 1.5-litre turbo three-cylinder co-developed with Volvo and shared with the Binyue. A pickup called the Farizon FX, sold from 2020, uses a monocoque body rather than a ladder frame, and Geely claims it was the first car-based truck in China. In 2021 the Boyue X arrived at the Chengdu show as the first model with the Vision Starburst design language.

The third generation, the Boyue L, was unveiled in August 2022 and launched in October that year. It is codenamed FX11, and it shares the CMA platform with the Xingyue and Xingyue L. Exports carry the name Starray or Atlas. A 2.0-litre turbo makes 218 hp (163 kW; 221 PS) and 325 Nm (240 lb ft), and a 1.5-litre turbo makes 181 hp (135 kW; 184 PS) and 290 Nm (214 lb ft), both with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, while hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions use Geely's three-speed DHT. The cabin has a 13.2-inch central screen and a 10.25-inch digital cluster, running Geely Galaxy OS Air on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip, with over-the-air updates.

The fourth-generation Boyue L, launched in 2025, moved to GEEA 3.0 electrics, a 15.4-inch central display and a 25.6-inch AR head-up display powered by a SiEngine Dragon Eagle-1 chip, running Flyme Auto. Its engines are a 1.5-litre turbo with 133 kW (178 hp; 181 PS) and a 2.0-litre turbo with 160 kW (215 hp; 218 PS), with MacPherson strut front suspension and multilink rear.

A smaller model, the Boyue Cool, arrived in January 2023 on the BMA platform. It began development as the Binyue L, took the name Boyue in June 2024 after the first-generation Boyue left the Chinese market, and is exported as the Cityray. A Boyue REV based on the Livan 7 EREV was revealed on 9 February 2026.

Geely Binyue and the Coolray

The Geely Binyue is a subcompact SUV that has been built since 22 August 2018 and sold abroad as the Geely Coolray. It was the first crossover on the BMA platform and sits between the Emgrand GS and the Boyue. It started with a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo of 136 hp (101 kW; 138 PS) or a 1.5-litre turbo three of 177 hp (132 kW; 179 PS). The plug-in hybrid adds an 11.3 kWh battery for 258 PS (190 kW; 254 hp), 415 Nm and about 62 km (39 mi) on electric power alone.

The Binyue Cool of 2022 brought the Vision Starburst design, 50 mm (2.0 in) of extra length and a 1.5-litre turbo making 181 hp (135 kW; 184 PS) and 290 Nm. Geely rates its 0-100 km/h time at 7.6 seconds and its fuel consumption at 5.8 litres per 100 km (49 mpg-imp; 41 mpg-US). The Binyue L facelift followed in November 2024. A Level 2 driver assistance package offers adaptive cruise control up to 150 km/h (93 mph), autonomous lane changes and automated parking.

The Binyue has the longest list of export names. The Philippines had the Coolray from 25 September 2019, marking Geely's return, and limited Sport and GT editions appeared in 2021 and 2022, including 1,000 Sport Limited cars. The 2024 facelift brought a new engine. Belarus and Russia got the Coolray in February 2020, and then BelGee, a joint venture of Geely and BelAZ, renamed the Belarusian-built car the BelGee X50 in August 2023. Vietnam launched it on 21 March 2025, imported from Malaysia. In Malaysia itself the same car is the Proton X50, revealed on 15 September 2020 and assembled at Tanjung Malim as Proton's second Geely-based SUV after the X70. Indonesia launched the Coolray at the 33rd Gaikindo show on 29 July 2026, imported from Malaysia, with an interior shared with the facelifted Proton X50. South Africa followed on 19 June 2026 with Nova, Vanguard and Vertex variants.

Geely Haoyue and the Okavango

The Geely Haoyue is a mid-size SUV introduced in China in 2020 and exported as the Okavango. Haoyue means heroic, and Okavango is named for the Okavango Delta in Botswana. Codenamed VX11, it has a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, front-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive, and a 1.8-litre turbo four making 181 hp (135 kW; 184 PS) and 300 Nm (221 lb ft).

Proton's version is the X90, launched in May 2023. It carries a 1.5-litre turbo three-cylinder with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, front-wheel drive only, and a multi-link rear suspension that Proton says it tuned for Malaysian roads. Most variants seat seven in a 2-3-2 layout, while the Flagship is a six-seater with captain seats. It reached South Africa on 25 August 2023, Brunei on 28 August 2023, Bangladesh on 29 February 2024 and Trinidad and Tobago on 13 March 2024. The X90 MC facelift of March 2026 swapped in a 181 PS (133 kW; 179 hp) four-cylinder engine and dropped the mild hybrid. It also cut equipment, including all driver assistance, and the ASEAN NCAP rating was revised to one star.

The Livan RL9, launched in December 2022, is an electric Haoyue with a 204 hp (152 kW; 207 PS) front motor, a 66.57 kWh NMC battery and a 470 km (292 mi) CLTC range. The second generation, the Haoyue L, was launched in December 2022 and replaced the original Haoyue. It uses Volvo's Drive-E 2.0-litre turbo with 215 hp (160 kW; 218 PS) and 325 Nm, and reaches 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds. The second-generation Okavango launched in Vietnam on 5 June 2026 in Executive and Premium trims.

What the Geely names mean when you shop

The names are the first hurdle. A Coolray is a Binyue and a Starray is a Boyue L, while a Proton X70 is a right-hand-drive Boyue and an X90 is an Okavango with different engines. Engines differ too. Proton uses a 1.5-litre turbo three-cylinder in the S70 that China never got, and ASEAN NCAP rated the original S70 at five stars but the stripped X90 MC at one, so the safety kit depends on the exact variant sold locally.

Geely's 2025 and 2026 launches

The fifth-generation Emgrand with its hybrid option was unveiled in October 2025, and the Boyue REV, based on the Livan 7 EREV, appeared in February 2026. Proton's S70 got a 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder in its 2026 MC1 update, with naturally aspirated S70 Lite and Prime variants added later in 2026. Facelifted Coolrays reached the Philippines in September 2024 and Vietnam in June 2026.
