A crossover that carried the Corolla name into the SUV market, with petrol and hybrid engines, a 2024 hybrid-only shift in Australia and a Chinese twin called the Frontlander.
The Toyota Corolla Cross is a compact crossover SUV built by Toyota since 2020 on the GA-C platform shared with the C-HR. It offers petrol and hybrid engines, sits between the C-HR and RAV4 in size, and was sold in many markets across Asia, the Americas, Europe and Oceania.
Toyota's Corolla Cross arrived in 2020 as a larger, more practical alternative to the C-HR, carrying the Corolla name into the compact SUV market. It sits on the TNGA-C (GA-C) platform and is offered with petrol or hybrid engines, depending on the market. The model has since spread across Asia, Africa, the Americas, Europe and Oceania.
Where did the Corolla Cross come from?
The Corolla Cross is a compact crossover SUV that Toyota first unveiled in Thailand in July 2020. Other Southeast Asian markets and Taiwan followed in the same year, and wider introductions began in 2021. In size it falls between the C-HR and the RAV4 in Toyota's line-up.
The C-HR, launched in 2016, was the first Toyota crossover on the GA-C platform, which makes the Corolla Cross the second. Its Chinese twin, the Frontlander, was made exclusively for China and introduced in late 2021.

How big is the Corolla Cross and how much luggage does it carry?
The Corolla Cross has a 2,640 mm (103.9 in) wheelbase, matching the C-HR, but a larger footprint that prioritises interior space and practicality. Boot capacity is 487 L (17.2 cu ft) when the car carries a puncture repair kit, and 440 L (16 cu ft) when it carries a temporary spare tyre.
Daizo Kameyama served as chief engineer on the project. The cabin is based on the regular Corolla's, with minor alterations for the crossover body.
Front-wheel drive versions use MacPherson struts up front and a torsion beam at the rear, a layout chosen to save interior space and cut costs. All-wheel drive models keep independent rear units, so the two drivetrains differ at the back.
What engines does the Corolla Cross use?
Petrol Corolla Cross models use a 1.8-litre 2ZR-FE or a 2.0-litre M20A-FKS four-cylinder engine, depending on the market. Hybrid versions pair a 1.8-litre 2ZR-FXE or a 2.0-litre M20A-FXS with electric assistance. Outputs run from 103 kW (138 hp; 140 PS) on the smaller petrol engine to 146 kW (196 hp; 199 PS) on the 2.0-litre hybrid system.
The 1.8-litre petrol has 103 kW (138 hp; 140 PS) peak output at 6,000 rpm, and its torque peaks at 177 Nm (131 lb ft) at 4,000 rpm. The 2.0-litre unit, M20A-FKS in regular form and M20A-FKB on flex fuel, makes 126-130 kW (169-174 hp; 171-177 PS) at 6,600 rpm, with 207-210 Nm (153-155 lb ft) at 4,400-4,800 rpm.
The hybrid system is built around a 1.8-litre 2ZR-FXE with an eCVT, a 6.5-Ah nickel-metal hydride battery and an AC synchronous motor delivering 53 kW (71 hp; 72 PS), with 163 Nm (120 lb ft) of torque. At 5,200 rpm the engine itself makes 72 kW (97 hp; 98 PS), with 142 Nm (105 lb ft) arriving at 3,600 rpm, and the complete 1.8-litre hybrid system makes 90 kW (121 hp; 122 PS).
Hybrid versions have become the common thread across the range. Australia went hybrid-only in July 2024, Thailand followed in January 2026, and Japan's facelifted line-up is entirely hybrid. Petrol and hybrid versions are both offered in Argentina, Colombia and Brazil, while Mexico sells petrol and hybrid trims side by side.
How did the facelift change the Corolla Cross?
The most visible update is at the front, where a redesigned bumper carries a honeycomb grille finished in body colour. The facelift also replaced the foot-operated mechanical parking brake with an electronic unit, and that change sits alongside the new front styling as one of the two most noticeable updates.
GR Sport versions received their own bumper, with a body-coloured panel between the headlights, a black grille and a restyled silver airdam. Facelifted cars then appeared in several markets, including Japan from 23 May 2025, Europe from May 2025 and Mexico from 11 September 2025.
Brazil's facelift arrived in April 2024 with XR, XRE, XRX and GR Sport trims, and Argentina and Colombia received the updated car in May 2024 with the same variants as before. South Africa's facelift arrived on 13 January 2025 with four trims: Xi, XS, XR and GR Sport. Thailand's facelift came on 8 February 2024, and in January 2026 its petrol Sport Plus was replaced by the HEV Smart, leaving hybrids as the only option there.
Where is the Corolla Cross sold?
The Corolla Cross is sold in Asia, Africa, the Americas, Europe and Oceania. As of December 2024 it was built in nine countries, including Japan, Thailand, Brazil and the United States, and market launches began in Thailand in July 2020 and reached Mexico in January 2023.
Asia and the Middle East
Thailand was the first launch on 9 July 2020, followed by Vietnam on 5 August 2020 and the Philippines on 20 August 2020. Malaysia launched on 25 March 2021, with local assembly from October 2021. Pakistan started with imports in April 2021, and local production began in December 2023.
Indonesia opened on 6 August 2020 with petrol and hybrid models, but petrol was dropped from dealers in August 2021 because sales were low. The GCC markets followed on 15 March 2021 with a 1.8-litre hybrid and CVT, and in China the model is produced by FAW Toyota.
Africa
Kenya launched the car on 18 November 2020 with only the 1.8-litre petrol engine, in Limited and Executive trims. South Africa followed in November 2021 with local production at the Toyota South Africa Motors plant, and the car was the best-selling passenger vehicle there in December 2025.
South African launch trims were Xi, XS and XR, with X-Over, Urban Sport, Adventure and Hybrid styling packages. The model has consistently ranked in that market's top 10 best-seller list.
The Americas
Brazil revealed the car on 12 March 2021 and built it at Sorocaba, where Toyota aimed for hybrids to make up 30 percent of sales. Argentina launched it on the same day as an import from Brazil, and Mexico followed on 23 January 2023. Brazil also exports the model to 22 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.
North American production started on 30 September 2021 at Huntsville, Alabama, inside the Mazda Toyota Manufacturing USA factory. The hybrid followed on 1 June 2022 for the 2023 model year, with standard all-wheel drive and a sport-tuned suspension.
Europe and Oceania
Europe received the model in September 2022 with a 2.0-litre hybrid and an optional all-wheel drive system that adds a rear electric motor. The European equipment list ran to a panoramic roof, a 12.3-inch instrument panel and a 10.5-inch centre display.
Australia went on sale on 12 October 2022 with GX, GXL and Atmos trims, and its range became hybrid-only in July 2024. New Zealand followed on 13 October 2022 with GX, GXL and Limited trims.
Is the Frontlander the same car as the Corolla Cross?
The Frontlander is the Chinese twin of the Corolla Cross, built by GAC Toyota while the Corolla Cross comes from FAW Toyota. Its styling at both ends follows the Japanese car, and it uses a 2.0-litre M20C-FKS engine, while the Corolla Cross in China uses the M20E-FKS unit.
The two cars debuted together at a Guangzhou motor show in November 2021. Toyota positions the Frontlander as the entry-level SUV in China, priced below the C-HR and IZOA, and the facelifted Frontlander launched on 23 September 2025.
Does the Corolla Cross have a hydrogen version?
Toyota built a prototype called the Corolla Cross H2 Concept, which carried a reworked G16E-GTS engine adapted for hydrogen. It is a prototype rather than a production car, and the production Corolla Cross uses petrol or hybrid engines in every market covered here.
How safe is the Corolla Cross and what awards did it win?
The US-market Corolla Cross won the Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in 2021. Its headlight results were mixed, with only the XLE trim fitted with Adaptive Front Lighting rated Good. The car was also named 2022 South African Car of the Year.
Across the other categories the IIHS gave the car Good and Superior ratings. The remaining headlight trims were rated Acceptable, so the headlight result was the one category that did not reach the top grades.
How does the Japanese Corolla Cross differ?
The Japanese car, unveiled on 14 September 2021, had its own front fascia and a dedicated Corolla C logo at the nose. Trim levels were G X, G, S and Z, with E-Four all-wheel drive optional on the petrol models that used a 1.8-litre 2ZR-FAE engine.
In 2023 a 1.8-litre hybrid joined the Z trim, and the petrol range moved to the 2.0-litre M20A-FKS engine. The facelifted car reached Japan on 23 May 2025 as an all-hybrid line-up of G, S, Z and GR Sport trims.
The GR Sport, added in May 2025, uses a matrix grille seen on other GR models and is offered only with E-Four all-wheel drive. The more rugged Z Adventure followed in July 2026 to mark the 60th anniversary of the Corolla nameplate, with a black-coated grille and metallic lower bumper garnishes.
