The short answer

Volkswagen Group of America is recalling certain 2023-2026 ID.4 SUVs in the United States, 22,524 vehicles in all, because the high-voltage battery may fail and lead to a fire. Until a repair is ready, owners are advised to charge to a maximum of 80 per cent. The remedy is still under development.

Volkswagen is asking owners of some ID.4 electric SUVs to stop charging past 80 per cent. The company has told US safety regulators that a battery fault in 22,524 of them could lead to a fire, and the repair is not ready.

What the recall covers

The campaign applies to certain 2023-2026 ID.4 vehicles, and the filing was made by Volkswagen Group of America. Its summary says the high voltage battery may fail and lead to a vehicle fire. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) records the consequence as a fire that increases the risk of injury.

The campaign is filed under NHTSA number 26V630000, and the agency logged it against the traction battery. NHTSA made the vehicle identification numbers searchable on its website on October 6, 2026, which lets owners check whether their own car is included.

The interim advice

There is no repair yet. The remedy is under development, and in the meantime owners are advised to charge only to a maximum of 80% battery capacity until the repair has been completed.

The recall record does not mark the vehicles as do-not-drive, and it does not carry a park-outside advisory. It also does not list an over-the-air update as the remedy, so the 80% limit is something owners are asked to apply themselves.

Letters and contacts

Interim letters telling owners about the safety risk are expected to be mailed on November 27, 2026, and additional letters will follow once the remedy is available. Owners can contact Volkswagen customer service on 1-800-893-5298 and should quote Volkswagen's own number for the recall, which is 93EX.

Within the agency's classification, the affected part sits in the electrical system, under the propulsion system, as the traction battery.
