The short answer

Volkswagen is taking pre-sales for a 37 kWh version of the ID. Cross, a smaller pack than the 52 kWh unit the crossover first offered after its mid-July debut. The WLTP range is up to 324 km, and DC charging from 10 to 80 per cent takes around 23 minutes. The Trend (85 kW) starts at 27,995 euros in Germany.

Volkswagen has opened pre-sales of the ID. Cross with a 37 kWh battery, a smaller pack that follows the 52 kWh unit the electric crossover was first offered with after its world premiere. The company says the version is aimed at drivers who mostly cover city streets and regular commuting routes and want a lower entry price. Volkswagen describes the model as affordable and versatile, and says pre-sales are starting now.

The smaller pack can be specified with either of two drive systems, rated at 85 kW (116 PS) or 99 kW (135 PS). Volkswagen gives the car a top speed of 160 km/h, which it says also suits motorway driving. The battery is offered across the Trend, Life and Style lines.

Range and charging

Volkswagen quotes up to 324 km on the WLTP cycle for the 37 kWh version. Quick DC charging, with 10 to 80 per cent taking around 23 minutes, comes as standard, according to the company. Volkswagen says the car is designed for typical daily distances, and pitches it at commuters and urban use.

The company also says the smaller pack combines lower purchase and operating costs with that range. The 52 kWh battery was the original launch pack, and the 37 kWh version now sits beside it as the cheaper way into the model.

Prices and equipment

The Trend (85 kW) starts at 27,995 euros in Germany. The entry Trend already comes with front and rear Park Distance Control and smartphone integration through App Connect. Life and Style add comfort and technology features, and some options come from higher vehicle classes.

Among those options is Connected Travel Assist, which can use networked data to support predictive assisted driving. Premium choices include a higher-grade sound system, a panoramic sunroof and 12-way electrically adjustable seats with a massage function.

What stays the same

Volkswagen says the basic concept of the car does not change with battery size. The powerful, friendly SUV design, the high-quality interior, the large displays and the room inside are all unchanged. Volkswagen describes the package as one with plenty of space and comfort at every battery size.
