Brodie Kostecki and Todd Hazelwood won the 2026 Bathurst 1000 for Dick Johnson Racing on 11 October. The 1000-kilometre race was held on the Mount Panorama circuit. Their time of five hours and 54 minutes is the quickest in the event's history, four minutes better than the previous best, set in 2024. It is the pair's first victory since 2019, and their fifth in total.
How the race was won
Kostecki was not in the lead until the closing laps. On lap 156, Chaz Mostert hit the inside wall and ran wide at the forest elbow, which brought out the first safety car of the race. The safety car withdrew after two laps, and Kostecki and Will Brown then passed Bates coming out of the chase. On lap 161, de Pasquale, who had been in maximum fuel-saving mode from lap 156, ran out of fuel at the chase and could not reach the finish, letting Kostecki pass him for the win.
Kostecki also had trouble earlier in the race. On lap 125 he had problems changing the front right brakes. Brown received a bad sportsmanship flag on lap 156 for an incident with Kostecki.
Key moments
- Lap 1: a multi-car crash at the cutting involved four cars.
- Lap 5: the field ran as a tribute to Peter Brock, whose best-known number was 05.
- Lap 34: a driver was docked five seconds for unsafe driving.
- Lap 40: the track surface broke up at the forest elbow, causing heavy tyre blistering for much of the race.
- Lap 80: Todd Hazelwood led at the halfway point.
- Lap 93: Mostert, Waters and Reynolds fought a battle lasting several laps.
- Lap 155: Kai Allen suffered a serious brake failure at the chase.
- Lap 161: de Pasquale ran out of fuel, and Kostecki took the win.
The field and the background
The event was first staged in 1960 at Phillip Island as a 500-mile contest for locally built standard production sedans. This year's edition was the 69th, and the 66th time the race has been held at Mount Panorama. The race was round 30 of the 2026 Supercars season.
The grid was split across three models: Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang and Toyota Supra, with ten, eleven and five cars respectively. Team 18 and Garry Rogers Motorsport each entered a wildcard car on top of the 24 regular-season entries. Toyota makes its first Supercars-era appearance at the event, and its first since 1998.
Matt Payne had won the previous edition. Garth Tander, his co-driver in that win, did not defend the title, having left motorsport for full-time commentary. Four drivers made their debut in the race: Jackson Walls, Reuben Goodall, Bayley Hall and Nathan Herne.
The event was produced by Supercars Media. Kayo Sports carried all sessions, including the support categories, and the Seven Network covered selected sessions from midday on Friday.
