The short answer

Audi announced on 25 October that it plans its first US production site, in Georgia. The company intends to invest around $4 billion and create about 4,500 jobs. Construction starts in 2027, production is planned for the early 2030s, and capacity is up to 200,000 vehicles a year.

Audi will build cars in the United States for the first time. The company announced on 25 October that it plans to put a factory in Georgia, backed by an investment of around $4 billion and about 4,500 jobs. Construction is due to begin in 2027, with the first vehicles planned for the early 2030s.

The plant is designed for an annual capacity of up to 200,000 vehicles. Audi says it will make premium SUVs tailored to North American buyers, built close to the customers who will drive them.

Why Georgia

The site is the Middle Georgia Mega Site. Audi points to a workforce with the right skills, an established network of automotive suppliers, strong logistics links and room to expand later. Starting from an empty site, the company says, lets it plan efficient and flexible production from the first day and bring in a local supplier base.

Gerd Walker, the board member responsible for production and logistics, described the aim as setting a benchmark for premium manufacturing that strengthens Audi's wider production network. The roughly 4,500 jobs at the plant are expected to be joined by work for suppliers, service providers and training partners in the region.

A third pillar for production

Audi calls the United States the world's second-largest premium market and admits it has not reached its full potential there. Gernot Doellner, chairman of the board of management, said the company has far bigger ambitions for America and described the project as building a stronger Audi business, not merely a factory.

Local production would make North America the third major pillar of Audi's global manufacturing, alongside Europe and China. The company argues that it will make the business more balanced and resilient, and cut its exposure to trade and currency risks.

Germany and Europe stay at the centre. Audi says they remain the industrial backbone of the brand, thanks to engineering expertise, technology and production skill, and that the American plant adds to the existing network rather than replacing any part of it.

What is still unknown

Audi has not named the models the factory will build, and it describes the investment as planned. Supervisory board chairman Manfred Doess framed it as a decision about the company's next several decades, arguing that cost cutting, efficiency and technology alone will not secure Audi's future and that the company needs the courage to invest.
