The short answer

Kia's EV6 is an electric compact crossover, built since 2021. It was the company's first dedicated EV and the first model on the E-GMP platform. The GT version reaches 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds with 430 kW, and the standard car was named 2022 European Car of the Year.

The Kia EV6 is a battery electric compact crossover that Kia has built since 2021. It was the first dedicated electric vehicle from the Korean maker and the first to use the Electric Global Modular Platform, a base shared with the Hyundai Ioniq 5. It was also named 2022 European Car of the Year, a result that helped establish Kia's electric range.

What is the Kia EV6?

The EV6 is a compact crossover SUV with a battery electric drivetrain. It was the first model given a name under Kia's new EV series, a range planned to run from EV1 to EV9. Its development codename was CV, and it was the first Kia model built on the E-GMP architecture.

Kia released the first photographs on 15 March 2021 and followed with the full launch on 2 August 2021. The car had a clear purpose from the start: to show that Kia could build a serious electric vehicle that was practical for families and enthusiasts alike.

Kia's first electric car set the template for a range, with a GT model that could outrun many rivals from the day it arrived.

How is the EV6 built on the E-GMP platform?

The E-GMP platform is a dedicated electric architecture, and the EV6 was the first Kia to use it. The same base underpins the Hyundai Ioniq 5, so the two cars share a great deal of their engineering. The platform allowed Kia to position the battery low in the structure and keep the cabin roomy.

Standard-range and Long Range powertrains were offered in most markets, with all-wheel drive available on the upper trims. Europe's first deliveries began in September 2021, and the range included the standard, GT Line and GT derivatives.

What does the EV6 look like and offer inside?

Outside, the EV6 has a tiger nose front fascia that Kia later called its digital tiger nose grille. Its side profile has shooting-brake styling with a sleek roofline, and connected braking lights run across the rear. The shape gives the car a distinct look among compact crossovers.

Inside, a panoramic curved display panel opens up the dashboard. A controller below the navigation screen handles the switch between infotainment and climate, and touch buttons control the heated seats and steering wheel. The materials include eco-friendly fabrics, artificial suede and leatherette upholstery.

Boot space is 520 L (18.4 cu ft) to the VDA standard, and folding the rear seats expands it to 1,300 L (45.9 cu ft). The options list includes an augmented reality head-up display, a 360 degree camera and remote parking. Safety equipment covers Lane Follow Assist, AEB collision avoidance and Safe Exit Assist.

How quick is the EV6 GT?

The EV6 GT arrived on 4 October 2022 as the high-performance version of the crossover. It uses dual electric motors that combine to deliver 430 kW (585 PS; 577 hp) with 740 Nm available. Kia quotes 0-100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, a figure that places it among the quickest electric crossovers of its time.

Chassis changes include four-piston brake calipers with a monoblock front caliper, Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres and a rear electronic limited-slip differential. Rack-driven power steering with variable ratio technology sharpens the response at speed. The car's GT Mode maximises regenerative braking, and it introduced Kia's first Drift Mode.

The GT looks the part with 21-inch wheels, neon green brake calipers and a rear diffuser. Its GT Mode button on the steering wheel gives quick access to the most aggressive setting. Its sports bucket seats use neon green piping and stitching, and a GT Mode button sits on the steering wheel. Some comfort items are missing on the GT, including ventilated seats and electric seat adjustment, and its claimed range is lower.

What changed with the 2024 facelift?

Kia revealed the facelifted EV6 on 14 May 2024. The changes included new angular LED headlights and daytime running lights, a redesigned front fascia and new alloy wheel designs. The interior was refreshed with a revised curved panoramic screen and a new steering wheel.

The most significant change is the battery. The new 84 kWh pack replaced the 77.4 kWh unit, and registered drivers can now power the electronics with a fingerprint rather than the key. The facelift arrived in Australia on 14 January 2026 with the larger battery across every variant. Beyond the battery, the revised curved screen, new steering wheel and updated technology gave the cabin a more modern feel, and the new alloy wheel designs freshened the exterior.

Where was the EV6 sold?

Europe was the first market to receive the car. Kia reported more than 33,000 prospects and 7,300 reservations across Europe by May 2021, after factory orders opened in late March 2021. The car went on sale in Mexico in November 2023, and it launched in North America in January 2022.

In North America the car came in Light, Wind and GT Line trims in the United States, and as a base model with a GT Line package in Canada. Across North America both Standard Range and Long Range powertrains were available. Production of most North American variants is expected to move to Kia's West Point, Georgia, plant for the 2025 model year, and the Georgia-built cars switch to the NACS charging port.

Across the Asia-Pacific region, the EV6 launched in New Zealand on 30 March 2022 and in Malaysia on 24 June 2022. It arrived in Indonesia on 11 August 2022, Singapore on 23 November 2022 and the Philippines on 21 March 2023. In Taiwan it launched on 19 April 2022 with four variants, and the GT followed on 6 November 2023.

Powertrain choices varied by market. Australia offered Air, GT Line RWD and GT Line AWD, all with the Long Range powertrain, and its facelift moved every variant to the larger 84 kWh battery. New Zealand offered Air, Earth and GT Line, with standard and Long Range options, and all-wheel drive on the upper two trims. In Mexico both the GT Line and GT used the Long Range powertrain.

Taiwan launched the EV6 on 19 April 2022 with four variants, including Air Extended Range and a GT-line e-AWD Extended Range model. The facelifted car arrived there on 10 June 2025 in three versions, reflecting how quickly the range was refined after launch.

Which awards did the EV6 win?

The headline result was the 2022 European Car of the Year honour, and the same year brought the Irish Car of the Year and What Car? Car of the Year titles. In Germany it was a premium winner in the 2022 German Car of the Year contest, and it earned Crossover of the Year at the TopGear.com 2021 awards.

Other honours included Best of the Best at the 2022 Red Dot Design Awards, the 2023 Indian Car of the Year Green award and the 2023 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year. The EV6 GT took the 2023 World Performance Car of the Year award. The 2022 car also became the third Kia to earn IIHS Top Safety Pick+.

How does the EV6 GT differ from the standard car?

The GT shares its platform and battery with the standard EV6 but adds dual motors, a rear electronic limited-slip differential and electronically controlled suspension. The cabin pairs sports seats trimmed with neon green piping with artificial suede door cards. Kia's first Drift Mode is one of the features that sets it apart.

The trade-offs are real. The GT lacks ventilated seats and electric seat adjustment, and it does not have the auto dip-down wing mirrors that the standard car offers when reversing. Its claimed range is lower, because the performance hardware uses more energy.

Kia built the GT in Korea for most markets. It reached Australia in January 2023, New Zealand in March 2023 and Taiwan on 6 November 2023. In Canada it was discontinued after the 2024 model year because demand was low.

Why does the EV6 matter for Kia's electric plans?

The EV6 became the template for Kia's EV line-up, and it showed buyers the new naming system would be simple to follow. Its name signalled a numbered range from EV1 to EV9, and its E-GMP platform gave the company a shared base for future electric models. The car showed that a mainstream brand could sell a premium electric crossover with confidence.

Its low-carbon credentials were recognised too. The Carbon Trust issued a Product Carbon Footprint certificate for the car, and in India it won the Green car award at the Indian Car of the Year event in 2023. Both awards pointed to the efficiency story that Kia wanted to tell.

How safe is the EV6?

The 2022 EV6 became the third Kia vehicle to earn the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Top Safety Pick+ award, following earlier Kia models that had won it. It achieved a Good rating in six separate crash tests, which made the result a strong endorsement of its structure and restraint systems.

The safety kit covers Lane Follow Assist, Highway Driving Assist 2 with automatic lane changing, AEB collision avoidance and Safe Exit Assist. Together those systems help the car keep its lane, avoid collisions and warn occupants before they open a door into traffic.
