Background
The original launched in China on 27 April 2023 at 3,780 mm (148.8 in) long, so the new car is 425 mm longer. Its Vitality and Freedom trims were rated at 305 km (190 mi) on the CLTC cycle, and the Flying trim at approximately 405 km (252 mi). All three were claimed to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in 13 seconds, with a 130 km/h (81 mph) top speed.
Safety equipment on the original included six airbags, rear disc brakes and electronic stability control. BYD received 10,000 orders within 24 hours of release. On 29 November 2023 the 200,000th car left the production line, seven months after the original launched.
Exports began in 2024. Export models use regional names: the Dolphin Mini in some Latin American markets, the Dolphin Surf in Europe and South Africa, and the Atto 1 in several Asia-Pacific markets. In Australia the Atto 1 went on sale in November 2025, in Essential and Premium variants.
Euro NCAP gave the European-specification Dolphin Surf five stars in 2025.
On 30 April 2024 BYD recalled 16,666 Seagull units in China over a reversing camera software failure, and the recall was carried out by over-the-air update.
