Ralph Boschung is a Swiss racing driver who competed in Formula 2 from 2017 to 2023, mostly with Campos Racing. He won a sprint race in GP3 in 2016 and took his maiden Formula 2 victory in 2023, before retiring in February 2024. He was later named a development driver by Audi Formula 1 Team.

Who is Ralph Boschung?

Ralph Boschung was born on 23 September 1997 and is a Swiss racing driver. He made his open-wheel debut in 2012 in the Formula BMW Talent Cup and later raced in the ADAC Formel Masters, the GP3 Series and Formula 2. He announced his retirement from racing in February 2024 and was named an Audi development driver in 2026.

His connection with motorsport continued in a different role.

How did Boschung start in open-wheel racing?

Boschung's open-wheel debut came in 2012 in the Formula BMW Talent Cup. He finished fifth in the championship, five points behind the champion, Marvin Dienst. He won the first race of the season and took a fourth place in the second.

Those results gave him a base for the step up to the ADAC Formel Masters the following year, where he would race for two seasons before moving into GP3.

What did the 2013 ADAC Formel Masters season bring?

In 2013 Boschung drove for Team KUG Motorsport in the ADAC Formel Masters and finished seventh overall. He inherited a race win at Slovakiaring after the original winner, and that year's champion, Alessio Picariello, received a penalty. He also finished on the podium six times.

The following year he moved to Lotus, where he partnered Dennis Marschall and Joel Eriksson. He opened the season with third place at Oschersleben and was on the rostrum in every race at the Red Bull Ring. Across the season he had eight podium finishes but no wins, and he ended seventh in the table, just behind his teammates.

Did Boschung win in GP3?

Yes, but not in his first season. His 2015 GP3 debut with Jenzer Motorsport brought one podium, third at Silverstone, and eleventh in the championship with 28 points. In 2016, with Koiranen GP, he won a sprint race at the Red Bull Ring, his first win in cars since 2013.

The 2015 season began badly. A rival knocked him out of the opening round, and his first points came in round two at the Red Bull Ring. He went on to build a five-race points streak, and his partners that year were Pal Varhaug and Matheo Tuscher, and he finished ahead of both of them in the standings.

The 2016 season had its own disruptions. In the middle of the year the team replaced him with Niko Kari for the Spa round, citing financial reasons. He returned at Monza, where he finished 18th and ninth, and then left the team for good. He still ended the season eleventh, and Koiranen finished fifth in the team championship.

How did Boschung's first Formula 2 season go?

Boschung joined Campos Racing in March 2017 for the inaugural Formula 2 Championship, initially partnering Stefano Coletti. He scored his first points at Baku, where he finished eighth in the feature race. He ended the year 19th with 11 points, more than his teammates put together.

His best finish that year was seventh in the Red Bull Ring feature race, which proved to be his last points finish of 2017. A clutch problem at the start of a sprint race and a collision in another round also cost him results.

He left Campos before the last round at Yas Marina. He was replaced by the FIA Formula 3 European champion of that season, Lando Norris.

What happened at MP Motorsport in 2018?

In 2018 Boschung raced for MP Motorsport alongside Roberto Merhi and later Dorian Boccolacci. He scored points in the first two rounds, in Bahrain and Baku, but then suffered five consecutive retirements from Spain to France.

His season then recovered in patches. He finished ninth and eighth at Silverstone, and at Monza he took eighth in the feature race from 18th on the grid. He finished the year with 17 points and 18th in the standings, and he was outscored by Merhi.

Boschung left MP Motorsport for budgetary reasons. Niko Kari took over for the Sochi and Abu Dhabi weekends.

What did the 2019 season with Trident look like?

The 2019 season put Boschung with Trident, sharing the team with Giuliano Alesi. His best early result was ninth in the feature race at Monaco, after starting 14th. The team's first points of the year came at Barcelona, where he finished tenth.

The Spa round of 2019 ended in tragedy. Boschung was involved in the feature race accident that killed Anthoine Hubert and seriously injured Juan Manuel Correa. Alesi's car was impounded by the Belgian authorities, so the team fielded only one car at Monza and Boschung stood down to allow Alesi to compete.

His season had been affected by funding problems throughout. He was replaced by Ryan Tveter and Dorian Boccolacci for the Austria and Britain rounds, and he lost his seat again before the final round at Abu Dhabi, when Christian Lundgaard took over. He finished the year with three points and 19th in the standings.

How did Boschung return to Formula 2 in 2020 and 2021?

Boschung returned to Formula 2 at the second Bahrain round of 2020, alongside Guilherme Samaia, after a chain of driver moves caused by Lewis Hamilton's positive coronavirus test. The feature race ended 14th for him, the sprint ended in retirement, and the weekend left him 25th overall for the year.

Campos then confirmed him for the 2021 season, with Gianluca Petecof as his partner at first. He lined up 12th for the Bahrain opener, but a collision in the first sprint ended his race, and he left the weekend without a point.

What was Boschung's breakthrough in 2021?

In 2021 Boschung scored 22 points in a single weekend at Monaco, more than he had scored in any full Formula 2 season before. At Jeddah he earned his first podium, third in the feature race after two accidents cut the race to five laps.

At Monaco he finished fourth in Sprint Race 1 after Christian Lundgaard retired. In Sprint Race 2 he finished fifth, and in the feature race he came sixth, having almost got past Guanyu Zhou for fifth at the finish. It was his best Formula 2 race result to that point.

The Baku weekend brought his best feature result to that point, fifth, and a pass on Marcus Armstrong on the penultimate lap of the first sprint to take sixth. Silverstone went less well, with a red flag in qualifying leaving him 15th on the grid.

He qualified fifth at Sochi, improving his personal best in qualifying, and came close to his maiden podium before a slide at turn 14 cost him third. A puncture then forced him to retire with three laps to go. He finished the season with a third place in Sprint Race 2 at Yas Marina.

In November 2021 LTO Network announced a sponsorship deal with Boschung, which aimed to take motorsport into the metaverse through NFT technology.

What did 2022 look like at Campos?

Boschung stayed with Campos for 2022, partnered by Olli Caldwell. He had a podium at Imola and another in the sprint at Spa, but a neck injury caused him to miss races and he finished the year 15th with 40 points.

The season began well. In Bahrain he qualified fifth and ran second early in both the sprint and feature races, finishing fourth in each. At Jeddah he qualified fourth, but a 20-second time penalty dropped him from eighth in the sprint to 15th.

At Imola he topped practice for the first time, qualified fourth and moved into second at the start of the feature race. He finished third after Theo Pourchaire and then Enzo Fittipaldi passed him, and that podium was a highlight of the year. His sprint race ended early with a fuel pump problem.

Neck pain then began to affect his weekends. He sat out Barcelona, qualified tenth at Monaco and withdrew again, and he returned at Baku to finish ninth in the feature race after a three-place grid drop. At Silverstone he qualified 17th and withdrew, and he decided to take an indefinite break to recover. Roberto Merhi took his seat.

He made his return at Spa-Francorchamps, topped practice and took third in the sprint race from reverse grid pole. He also finished 14th in the feature race. Later rounds brought more trouble, including a collision at Monza that bent his steering and grid penalties in the following races.

How did Boschung's final Formula 2 season go?

In 2023 Boschung stayed with Campos Racing, joined by Kush Maini. He won his maiden Formula 2 race in the Bahrain sprint on his 96th start and finished the year 16th in the standings with 37 points.

The season opened with success he had not achieved before. From reverse grid pole he took the lead of the sprint race and held it, and on Sunday he finished second in the feature race after a chaotic opening lap. He said the car felt incredible and that the team's race pace was better than the year before.

In Jeddah he qualified ninth and took the standings lead after a fourth place in the sprint. He then went eight rounds without points, before a double points finish at Spa with eighth and tenth. His last points finish came at Monza, where he was ninth in an incident-marred feature race.

By the end of that season he was the only driver to have raced in every season of Formula 2's modern era.

Why did Boschung retire, and what is he doing now?

Boschung announced his retirement from racing on 6 February 2024, through a post on X. He had competed in Formula 2 for five seasons, and his final year had brought him his first victory in the series.

His connection with motorsport continued in a different role. On 16 February 2026 Audi Formula 1 Team named him one of its development drivers. He had already been assisting the team with the development of the Audi R26 through simulator work and other feedback.

What is Boschung's legacy?

Boschung's career spanned German and European junior series before Formula 2, and it ended with a maiden Formula 2 win in 2023. His results included a GP3 sprint victory and a long run of points finishes across five Formula 2 seasons.

His story also shows how much depended on team funding in the junior ranks. Several of his seasons ended early because of budget decisions, and his 2026 role with Audi is a development position rather than a racing one.
