Audi says the premium compact has been delivered to more than 100 countries and now offers 17 model and drive variants.
Audi marks 30 years of the A3, dating from its 1996 premiere in Paris. The company announced the anniversary on 9 October. More than six million units have been built, and the car has been delivered to more than 100 countries. The current generation offers 17 model and drive variants.
Audi has marked 30 years of the A3, the model it says established the premium compact class when it premiered at the 1996 Salon Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris. The company says more than six million units have rolled off the line since production began. Production started in Ingolstadt, and local production was later added in Brazil and Hungary.
The first three generations
The first A3 (8L) was a three-door hatchback with a coupe-like look and a long list of accessories. Customers could choose from four petrol and four diesel engines. Quattro all-wheel drive reached the compact class in September 1998. The sporty S3 arrived in 1999 with a 1.8-litre turbocharged engine producing 154 kW (210 PS) and all-wheel drive, rising to 165 kW (225 PS) in 2001.
The second generation (8P), launched in 2003, grew in length, wheelbase and width. The Sportback followed in 2004 with the Singleframe grille, which Audi says became a defining design element of the brand. The RS 3 arrived in 2011 with a five-cylinder unit rated at 250 kW (340 PS), and Audi describes it as a forerunner of modern hot hatches.
| Generation | Years | Notable point, per Audi |
|---|---|---|
| 8L | 1996 to 2003 | Three-door hatchback; quattro from 1998 |
| 8P | 2003 to 2013 | Sportback from 2004; RS 3 from 2011 |
| 8V | 2012 to 2020 | First model on the MQB platform; plug-in hybrid from 2014 |
| 8Y | 2020 onward | Touch-based operating concept; 48-volt mild hybrids |
Later generations
The third generation (8V), launched in 2012, was the first Audi on the modular transverse matrix (MQB) and introduced cylinder-on-demand technology. A sedan joined the range in 2013, and the A3 Sportback e-tron became the brand's first plug-in hybrid for the compact segment in 2014. The RS 3 Sedan arrived in 2016 with a 294 kW (400 PS) engine.
The fourth generation (8Y), introduced in 2020, brought a sportier design and some 48-volt mild hybrid systems. Audi quotes the 2021 RS 3 at 3.8 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h, topping out at 290 km/h. The A3 allstreet crossover arrived in 2024 with three centimetres more ground clearance than the Sportback, and the S3 gained 245 kW (333 PS) that year.
Audi says the A3 has combined everyday usability, premium character and technical innovation, and that the current car is highly connected, with a panoramic display and digital services.
